Ok all these threads about Kindles makes me want one now.

Does anyone have the Kindle DX? Anyone have the Apple IPad? Any advantages (besides price) of one over the other?

I'm also trying to decide! Looking forward to reviews!

socool, it really depends on what you want to do.

If you like the idea of emails, watching movies, and surfing the net as well as reading books, get the ipad.

If you want to read for hours at a time and not be disturbed by distractions (so you can immerse yourself), bet the Kindle.

Also, what kind of books do you read? If it's just general books with text, you don't need the Kindle DX. In fact, I still think the Kindle DX is overpriced for what it is and I would be hardpressed to buy it for $379.

As for the ipad/Kindle 3 comparison, Kindle 3 is smaller and lighter. I held the ipad and found it a bit too heavy for comfortable reading (and I would imagine the Kindle DX would feel a bit unwieldy as well). Keep in mind the ipad is backlit. Kindle is e-ink, which makes for very comfortable reading.

With Kindle prices now being much closer to reasonable, there's no question in my mind that if your main purpose is to read A LOT, iPad is not a contender.

I agree with TGal - if you want an eReader, get the Kindle. If you want to surf the net and do a little bit of reading, get the iPad.

A backlit screen is what distinguishes a kindle from an ipad/computer - backlit screens strain the eyes after a period of time reading. Its not optimal to read off your computer screen, hence its not optimal to read off an ipad. So if you want to read a lot, a kindle is what you need =) and you WILL love it

I guess I will wait before I purchase anything, because right now I really don't know what I want. It would be nice to read a book, magazines, and watch a movie on a hand held screen. But I have a laptop to do much of that. Have to really think about it. Thanks for your responses.

What TGal said.

I have the Kindle 3, and had the Kindle 2. My dad has the iPad and I got to play with it. Totally different functionalities, IMO. The iPad is far more versatile (though really, no need for it in my life since I'm on my computer all the time), but really does suck as an e-reader because of the backlit screen. The Kindle has basic internet (it has an experimental browser) but you're really not going to be wanting it for anything other than reading. I actually wouldn't think it would be overkill to get both an iPad and a Kindle (probably not the DX though unless most of what you read are periodicals, or textbooks, or such, rather than novels), if you were looking to use the iPad in lieu of a computer and use the Kindle for reading.

I was leaning towards the kindle as I really don't need an iPad and the backlit issue would put me off reading I think. I want the device to read on.

My birthday is coming up, time to start dropping hints!

Maybe there will be some Black Friday deals on the Kindle?

Black Friday = insanity, wherein participants often lose all decorum and courtesy and dive into all-out battle for select material goods on sale the Friday after Thanksgiving Thursday in the US.

Ah. Thanks Yssie.

There is also a Cyber-Monday (The Monday after Thanksgiving in the US) where many on-line vendors offer huge deals on-line.

I would be surprised if Amazon ran black Friday on Kindle...there would be too much cost in doing price adjustments to make it worthwhile. The retailers that carry them, I'm not sure if they're held to MSRP....
