Knot/Feather Inclusion on Pavilion ok?

I did a bit of reading on "knots" and have heard some people say

It should be fine, if it survived the diamond cutting process it should be good

Others say that eventually over time it will fall out and become a cavity

I found this one diamond with a knot on the pavilion - would the chances of this knot becoming an issue be low since I assume that the pavilion area should be protected by the setting?

Or is this something to avoid and is too large of knot to be a risk issue?

Similarly, I have another diamond in mind but it looks like there is a feather on the pavilion. Would this also be a risky venture?

Many thanks in advance awesome people

Hi Chilly,

What's the clarity grade please?

Agh I click post too fast then I remember I should provide more info...

The first diamond with the knot has the following specs

Excellent cut/polish/symmetry
No fluorescence

HCA of 1.1

The second one with the feather has these specs

* waves at Chilly* :mrgreen:

This is an interesting one Chilly, as you have read, opinions do vary and this can be a bit of a knotty problem ( excuse the pathetic pun!)

Here is an old thread where a similar question was asked and we had an excellent response from expert Dan Gillen.

I think the best way is to evaluate each stone with a knot individually especially in SI2 clarity grades. You might find the knot doesn't ever cause any kind of problem and be absolutely fine or it might pose a problem at some stage. It would be interesting to see if any of the pro's can chime in with their thoughts.

Regrettably no diamond is bullet proof anyway, I remember years back a poor PSer's diamond broke in half after she hit her hand on a shopping cart, she didn't think at the time it was much of a blow or that her diamond was even involved, but if I remember rightly, when she went to get her keys out of her bag, she had only half a diamond left sitting in her ring.... :((

I would say lets keep this stone in mind and continue on perhaps, we can come back to it if needed.

Could you post a link to the reports for both please or all the proportions?

I usually stay away from knots, because of all the potential negatives and risk with it, but this one intrigued me as the knot was on the bottom of the diamond vs the top.

The table looks quite clean, so I was hopeful (and my wallet was also hopeful) this would be ok

Is the feather in the second one any possible concern? It looks like it is also on the pavilion edge near the girdle

And I most certainly can post the reports =)

The best thing to do Chilly if you wanted to go for our knotty contender would be to get an expert's opinion on it's suitability for your purposes, is the diamond for sale with one of the trusted vendors? If so, then it won't be a problem to get their advice on this stone. Alternatively if not, make sure you have an agreed return period and have time to get an appraiser to check it out. The SI1 with the feather is probably absolutely fine but again it's best to check if the feather presents any kind of durability issue due to its location, whether it breaks the surface etc - chances are it's probably fine but it never hurts to err on the side of caution with either of these inclusions as I certainly wouldn't want to be irresponsible and tell you each diamond will be definitely ok, check with an expert that can give you more reliable info is my advice. Having said that, I feel it is unlikely the SI1 feather would be an issue but of course I cannot say for sure, the SI2 knot if it were me, I would like an expert opinion on that one just in case.

Thanks for posting the reports Chilly!
