I''ve owned both, but on the plasma (not sure which brand), the circuit board went out after a couple years and it''ll cost $600 to fix so it''s sitting in the garage, broken! Our LCD is a Sharp and I like it, but it''s small 42" so it''s not as fun to watch movies on and the picture quality isn''t as impressive.

If we buy another tv, I''d probably go for a plasma again. Watching kids'' movies, like "Monsters," on it is incredible. That movie looks very nice on a high-quality screen. If we get another LCD, we''d opt for a bigger, better one. The one we got was less than $1,000 at Costco.

I didn''t want to deal with the ''recharging'' thing on the plasma, so we went with a Toshiba DLP in the living room and a Samsung LCD in the guest room.

52" Sony Bravia XBR LCD in the family room and various size Sharp Aquos'' in the bedrooms and den. LCDs just seemed sharper and brighter to us than plasmas. Besides we didn''t want to have to deal with burn-in with the plasmas.

We have 3 LCD television- a 46" Samsung in the livingroom, a 47" LG in the bedroom, and a 32" Sharp Aquos in our work out room, ALL 3 televisions are amazing. we are going to get FIOS and I cannot wait to see what the picture looks like, it is supposed to be incredible, but for now, when we watch HD movies and play video games, the picture is unbelievable. If you get an LCD make sure you get 1080p.

I have 2 - Phillips 32" and Sharp 24"(?). Picture quality is much better on the Phillips. When I looked at different models side by side in the store, Phillips had the best picture by far. Didn''t go with plasma because it was available only in larger sizes and the picture burn on the plasma (I tend to pause my tivo a lot).

We have a Hitachi 42" HD plasma which is amazing, we''ve had it for over 2 years and a 20" LCD in the bedroom. I totally love our plasma and the picure quality is amazing. We were patient and did the burn in and its really paid off. The only problem with a plasma is you have to treat it well and if you don''t have the time and patience its not worth it. My folks have an LG LCD, same size as our big un, and I definitely see a difference in picture quality at that size. I must admit tho, I love my wee LCD, it crackin!

my friend said....if you decide on a LCD go with the 120HZ models.

We just got a 46" Sharp LCD.

I just got a 58" Samsung Plasma over Christmas. In stores I actually thought the LCDs looked better - brighter, sharper, more vivid overall. However they topped out at 52" and I wanted 58" so I ended up with a plasma.

So far the plasma has been fantastic. I can''t say that I miss not getting an LCD at all. The ghosting issues are a thing of the past - there''s no reprogramming or refreshing or anything like that. I''ve been treating it like a regular tube tv and it''s been perfectly fine.

The magazines all insist that plasma has a better picture than LCD. Honestly, I couldn''t tell in the stores when they were side by side. But plasma is cheaper than the same size LCD, so if cost is a factor and your room is not really bright when you''ll be watching (e.g. you watch tv during the day and your room has huge windows), then the plasma will be fine. If your room is brightly lit, then LCD will be better. In terms of overall life, both should last for many thousands of hours of viewing time. In the long-term, it looks like LCD is winning out and I think plasma''s share of the market will dimish over time.

Plan on getting an HD source - either by upgrading to digital cable or going with satellite. If you watch DVDs, you''ll also want to get a blueray player. Blueray DVDs are spectacular. And if you use Netflix they have an option to get blueray DVDs automatically if they''re available for movies in your queue.

we just got a plasma ..... it''s a panasonic viera. we researched for about 2 months, and chiefneil summed up much of what played into our decision. we had a room that was not brightly lit which is why plasma became more of a focus (learned plasma better for dim rooms, lcd great in bright rooms). also we needed a specific size screen (42"), and based upon the viewing distance from the couch the plasma was again the better choice for us. the LCD would have required us to move the couch farther back than we could have, or choose a different size screen.

we constantly found reviews/experts/consumer reports, etc. saying burnout in plasmas had been addressed and was no longer an issue (unless you leave a screen on for a couple of days.). we are in the process of switching to HD programming, so as of yet i cannot comment on just how spectacular the picture is. with SD programming it is noticably poorer than tube, which we expected based upon our research. that was the thing that had us hesitating for a couple of months - you pretty much have to take the plunge and go HD to experience the higher picture quality, otherwise it is worse than tube tv, which i have found to be true with both LCD and plasma. no ghosting, to which i have been very senstive to in the past with flatscreens and which made me wonder what all the hype was about.

we did not compare the picture quality in stores - basically you are subject to their lighting which probably doesn''t similate your home lighting, and is probably better for one than the other (lcd or plasma). you are also watching a feed that is being split between multiple tvs, and also you are viewing it with their settings programmed in. we didn''t know enough about fiddling with the settings to achieve a better feel for how it might look in our home. there were other variables discussed on consumer sites and forums that can account for the screens not giving you an accurate assessment in stores, but of course i can''t remember them. basically we relied on our research online, including reviews that allowed others'' experiences to be our ''eyes''.

friends of ours just bought a 42" toshiba LCD, after much research of their own. they are very pleased with it, enough to encourage us to get the same one. while LCD fit their needs, we found plasma fit ours.

oh, and the price on the tv we got came down $300 in one month, and we also got lucky to hit upon a $200 rebate. we expected the drop in prices, and my DH thinks they will continue to drop in price.

My Dad runs a large LCD company, which is based out of the UK. I am obviously for LCDs, however I do not know the actual reasons why/if they are better (please, do not tell my dad) :) hehe

We have a few Philips flat screen LCDs.

Hubby is a freak, bought too many for Nantucket house, and now has updated all the ones here. He prefers LCD''s. Me I want my old TV back, it was a SONY and worked just fine thank you very much.

He bought a Ronco for the family room, it''s awesome. But cost more than what I would want to spend. Luckily, this was his project and not mine.

those old Sony TV are the best, they were all made in Japan back then. the last TV i bought (in 1990) was a 35" Mitsubishi .

my bf wants a 52 inch sharp aquos... i was like fine whatever go for it , because the deal is that he looks at tv''s = i look at erings LOL

anyway, that being said, I dunno much about why he prefers that one, but another post above mentions that same tv. My bf''s mother has had a sharp aquos for 2 years and so far has not had any problems with it.

I have a friend who has a plasma and he does have "CNN" shadow burnt into the bottom corner of his tv lol... but as someone stated, this is an older plasma tv, so apparently this issue has been resolved...

Cheers! fluffy
