Let's play a game... rainbow gems.

Thank you for sharing such an interesting and dramatic comparison. Would you say the difference in quality real life was clearly obvious between the 400w one and others?

Yes, there was a clear difference between the 400w and the others in real life as it just glowed - but for me, I’d rather save the $$$ and pretend-buy the middle ring instead!

I guess it’s like comparing a G colour diamond to a D colour - both look white, but it’s only when you put them side by side that you notice a difference. On its own, the other two rings were very nice too!

Agreed the price jump is huge for a small differential in quality

Thanks, @Autumn in New England ! They were a lucky find. As for wearing them…outside the house, no. The struggle is real with my jewelry use…I am fairly content staring at them in my jewelry box or wearing them around the house, like the gem troll that I am

OMG same! I never wear my rings, like ever. lol I think of them as tiny works of art with which I happily adorn my display cabinet. I tend to wear my sterling silver jewelry daily!

“Gem troll” made my day hahaha, I’ll introduce myself as one the next time someone asks me what I do!

As for green: these jadeite rings aren’t mine, but I had the pleasure of trying them on. The prices are in RMB, and 1w = 10,000 RMB = approx USD 1,500.

So the most expensive ring at 400w is around USD 550k retail price… the others are one ninth/tenth of that.

I can definitely see the difference! Although, you can tell I'm not a jade connoisseur, because I prefer the color of the least expensive one best. lol So I clearly don't know what I'm look at, but I will say the most expensive one's translucency and luster seems to be much finer. @Crimson, did you see these guys? :kiss2: Thank you for sharing, Pomelo! You're gorgeous!!

Yes, I have! @Pomelo shared them on the jadeite thread.
The major difference between the 400 W ring, and the others is its translucency. In jadeite, translucency is even more important than colour. It is a prerequisite for any stone to be called imperial green. It can’t be called imperial green if it isn’t highly translucent.
Going back to colour, I do like the colour of the lighter green stone too. It is fresher and brighter, but it’s texture is also less fine and it’s less translucent, so that makes the price more friendly.

Makes so much sense! Thank you!! This ol' girl is learning. :D

Adding to the beauty of coloured gems

Now THIS is a true rainbow submission! There isn't anything I love more than bling collection photos. My whole goal is to one day have the entire spectrum of rings, so I can snap a group rainbow shot. Wow, that incredible aqua certainly stands out... and I love the heart peridot!

Let's start back at RED, since we had a little of everything in the last comment!

This red is reserved under my name. I got my first “assignment” as a “jewellery concierge”.
One of my friends wants to buy a gift for his wife’s birthday. He doesn’t know how to choose so he asked for my help. I got his wife to go shopping with me and this is what she liked — an unheated Burmese ruby.
She almost bought it and I was wondering, now what?? But the Jeweller {in cahoots with me) persuaded her to take her time, and she agreed because it is not a small purchase.
How are we going to keep this secret until her birthday?! We could have dragged it out for longer but given that the supply of gems from Burma has come almost to a standstill, I thought we had better grab what we can. Do you think I made the right decision?IMG_1246.jpeg

I like the design of the ring very much! Re: the ruby itself: how does the colour in the photo compare to how it looks in reality? The photo makes it look rather purplish (which is how mine looks in pictures too, no matter how hard I try to capture the true red of the gems), but the saturation gives me a little pause. Does it look more lively and saturated to the naked eye?

Yes, @Joanne10. I just managed to find a better photo that was taken earlier.
It reacts very well to light. Maybe it is because the stone is pleochroic that it looks so different. I would say it is pinkish purplish red, not clearly red like the one in my profile pic.

I love the saturation! :kiss2: I like the colour quite a bit (okay, I’d eat the gem, it looks just like a hard candy sweet, that’s how scrumptious it looks in this pic), but colour is very personal, and this is more pink than red to me. But if your friend loved the ring and the stone, why not? :kiss2:

@Joanne10 Haha, yes it is very personal. She likes less saturated emeralds and jadeite whereas I am the one going for the Muzo greens, imperial greens and pigeon blood reds; I also love crazy neon spinels — this ruby reminds me of them.
Anyway it is an odd one. At times it looks dark and purplish and at other times it just pops. The price was good too. Actually a no-brainer so … good for her husband who’s paying. I told him since we got this at a price below his budget, he could throw in a pair of earrings :D

I just want to share this beautiful, almost 10 ct rainbow moonstone. It fits right here, under all colors. Should I buy it? I would have if I hadn’t recently plonked money on a blue item which I shall share later.

Looooooooove the ring you got for your friend!!! I’m not a moonstone kind of girl but I can’t wait to see your blue item!!!!!!

I've seen quite an influx of these huge Madagascar rainbow moonstones recently! On one hand I find them beautiful, on the other hand I'm just not sure its something I'm that personally interested in acquiring.

you can look for price comparisons here if it helps make a decision (not saying all are the same quality as the above - no idea). Several over/around 10ct. They've posted a few on their IG account I think but with black backgrounds.

@Crimson I think because I come from a background in translucent/opaque cabochons like turquoise, sugilite, chalcedony, etc., I just love moonstone. And rainbow moonstone is my favorite! That thing is bonkers!! We'll count it as our orange this round.

And the ring you chose for your friend... the glamour is confounding! If she loved it so much that she was willing to buy it right then and there, then you definitely made the right decision grabbing it on the sly. When is her b-day? Kudos!

I also can't wait to see your new blue!!

YELLOW is up next.

Thank you, @toomuch! I was hankering after those heart-shaped and drop shaped moonstones from StarLanka too :mrgreen2::mrgreen2:

Thank you @Autumn in New England!
I wish the hunt didn’t end this quickly. I want to have more fun :kiss2:
Well, at least there’s some budget left for another small piece. I’m going to drag that I’ll as long as I can.:P2

Here is yellow—my first. A somebody’s got to buy this stone, (thank you again, PS), yellow diamond, and a LoupeTroop find of @CBianco’s amazing setting combined.

I love, love, love that setting. In fact ,I almost bought it! @CBianco is so nice and has exquisite taste in jewelry! I didn’t have a vision for what I would do with the ring, so ended up waiting too long. You ,obviously, knew what would look perfectly stunning in it! Congratulations and wishing you much enjoyment!

Oh that is just lovely!! Please tell me more about the diamond stats. Do we ever tire of seeing FCDs? :snooty:

I tell her (CBianco) all the time how immaculate her aesthetic is!! Isn't it funny how everyone's collection seems to have a running theme? Like, if you posted them anonymously, we'd likely know instantly to whom they belong.

GREEN plays again!

You are so kind! I was on the hunt for a mighty setting for a small (.75 ct) stone, and this was perfect.
