Looking at 2+ carat OEC/Transitional to replace lost e-ring

I know, right? But Erica will work with me on thd pricing so assume price won't be an issue. She said the larger shows a bit more color from the side (but both face up white), and larger one is more shallow in cut (thus better spread I guess). More important tho is that they each have distinct cuts/faceting, and while I THINK I prefer more checkboard look like the 2.64, 2.88 does look rather lively and that SIZE! :eek2:

2.88 all the way, it's beautiful and BIG.

You are never going to hear me root against that 2.64. It's a FIRECRACKER. I trust Erica's opinion 150%- she is an old cut expert. If you are going for size as your #1 priority- I'd choose the 2.88 but if you want a truly checkerboardy "lightshow" tranny, you might be happier with the 2.64.

I'd have to read over this to see what you are thinking for setting, but If you are gonna go with a halo, The 2.64 might be the better bet.

Oh goodness, both are gorgeous just different flavors! It depends on your priority, size or cut. I honestly think the 2.88 is stunning and hard to not go with it but the facets of the 2.64 are so lovely.

The 2.88 looks more lively to me. However in the first three videos, I see a darker top facet in the center that doesn't seem to light up as much. I don't love the faceting of the 2.64. So it shows that it is very much dependent on personal preference. Many have seen the 2.64 in person and love it. I have no doubt it is just a stunning stone. I can't wait to see what you think about the tranny and other of Grace's stones. Please keep us updated and let us know what you see and prefer.

Ok, after a long night of debating and changing my mind a hundred times, I pulled the trigger and 2.88 is on its way to me! I didn't set out with size as my priority, but once I saw the comparison videos, it was hard to resist the combination. Hopefully it's as lively as it appears on videos.

I'm still seeing the 2.25 from jbG on Fri so I'll be making the FINAL decision then.

I can't belive I'm getting this close to getting my dream diamond! And so much bigger than I would've ever expected! :eek2:

Ooh so exciting! Good luck.:appl:

Great, how exciting for you! Best of luck deciding!!!

It’s a great thing that you’re seeing the tranny in person. And you should look at as many as you can while you’re there. I have an OEC myself but I just LOVE trannys with gorgeous fat arrows. LOVE LOVE LOVE them. They are so chunky and cute!! So if that tranny grabs your heart when you see it, go for it. That’s the super fun thing about shopping for old cuts. It’s a totally emotional experience, more so than shopping for MRBs for me anyway. Have lots of fun!

This is excellent advice. On paper, I never would have selected my Transitional, at just shy of 9mm its bigger than I ever wanted to go, and it's stats are outside the range I wanted (crown height), but it caught my heart when I saw it in person. It was brighter than any of the other (fantastic) diamonds that had better specs and were closer to the size I wanted. But I wanted THAT one. Of course I'm selling it now (long story), but if I didn't have to... I'd keep it forever because it caught my heart.

Don't treat Old rounds as MRB. They are fancies and really need to be seen in person.

Sorry for the threadjack, but @LaylaR, are there pics anywhere of your 9mm transitional? It sounds sensational.
@Babyblue033 I'm so excited for you that you'll be able to compare that 2.88 with the 2.25 in person. How are you thinking to set it again? Halo was on the table initially but is it still with how much bigger the 2.88 is?

@LaylaR, first off, hi Gypsy! I haven't been around but I remember you from "back in the days" :mrgreen2:

I also wish I could've seen both stones from Erica in person (2.64 & 2.88) but that wasn't feasible, but hoping I can fine the one that sings to me between the 2 I'll be seeing this week.

@foxinsox, if 2.88 is the one then I will probably rethink the halo thing altogether. With that size I think I might actually enjoy it in a solitaire. For 2.25 I might still consider the SS setting, both because of the size but from budget perspective too since that one will give me a little more room on the setting budget.

Either way, I'll put it into a temporary solitaire setting for awhile before decising on the final home for her.

Hi Babyblues: I remember you too! One piece of advice for your temporary setting, since that's what I did for my transitional: go for a six prong design. I went for a four prong, in my inexperience with stones of that size and regret it.

I never forgot what you said once L about ' you see a wonky l'il bugger and it steals your heart.' So true.

This is splendid, I'll be following all the way!

I am very excited to hear about these stones and what you think! Congratulations on being on the road to your new stone!

Looks like a beautiful stone, and it's great that you are ordering it to see with your own eyes! That makes all the difference in the world!

I wanted to second bright ice's setting advice above. Since you've been around, many who love SS have now been using CVB Inspired Design for antique style settings, many multiple times including bright ice and me!

Can't wait to see which you decide to get! Both are such beautiful stones..

Wishing you luck today - Hopefully once you have seen them both a clear winner will be easy to choose!

I saw that CVB was quite popular around here! I looked at her design for solitairs in case I decide that route with 2.88 (love the Dahlia) but I didn't think about halo similar to my original SS love. I'll consider that, maybe I can still afford that look afterall.

Wishing you luck today - Hopefully once you have seen them both a clear winner will be easy to choose!
That's what I'm hoping, that I'll just KNOW when I see them both and it won't be an agonizing decision (I'm painfully indecisive!)

Just a few more hours to go, hopefully today will end with my dream diamond in my possession!

Met with Erica yesterday, and here's my first world problem. Both stones are gorgeous! :confused2:

The challenge was that the office she rented had TERRIBLE lighting so I don't feel like I got to see 2.25 in its full glory. I did think I liked the faceting of 2.25 more than 2.88, more checkboard geometric look. But I've had 2.88 with me for a few days now so I got to know her better. At the office since I liked the more checkerboard faceting on 2.25, I felt certain I would go with that one, but then I had a long (and intense) discussion with DH in the evening and now I'm back to thinking 2.88 is the right choice for us overall. He strongly prefers 2.88, both for what he sees as more symetric faceting and larger size.

Took some TERRIBLE pictures, partly due to bad lighting and just my phone camera which just doesn't seem capable of capturing accurate pictures at all.. 2.88 in particular is not photogenic... But you can see the size difference, and you can kind of see the faceting of 2.25. Tried a more true OEC as a comparison just for fun but it was a K and I found out J is the outer range of my color comfort zone.

This is a tough decision. I’d say go with the Faceting you love best but if it’s not checking the rest of the boxes you want then maybe neither is *your* stone. The more you see the more you get to know your preferences and deal breakers so to speak.

And Erica's photo of much more accurate representation of 2.88. Has a very distinctive "snowflake" look which is very obvious in real life too.

Apparently SIZE is an important factor for me which I had no idea. I'm going from 1ct to 2+ so it's a major upgrade either way, but after seeing and living with 2.88, it's become clear I love the presence of a larger stone and how it amplifies all its wonderful characteristics. Who would've thought I would worry 2.25ct was not "big enough"... o_O:eek2::confused2::rolleyes2:

It's beautiful! I totally get what you mean about being drawn to the checkerboard faceting, but being more drawn to this faceting in real life. I recently bought a similar facet stone from Erica and am still in awe over it. In person it is incredible the way the big chunky facets play with the light and the symmetry is very pleasing to the eye.

Alright, it's official! 2.88 J is here to stay!

Thank you everyone for your help and feedback, and just in general listening to me being indecisive and obsessive. I swear I'm usually not this flaky! This was a much harder decision than I expected because stones I was considering were all beautiful in their own way and what I THOUGHT was the most important factor to me turned out to get trumped by other factors I gave little consideration to. Go figures.

Oddly, now that I've made up my mind that this stone is actually mine, I love it even more :kiss2:

Now off to obsess over how to set this lady! :cool2:

Congratulations on your new stone!

Erica also makes settings and she was a pleasure to work with. She offers a discount on the setting when you buy the stone from her. If one of her settings don't call out to you, you can send her inspiration photos or make a "frankenring" like I am doing with different elements from her settings.

Best of luck and be sure to come back and share the finished ring.
