Any one have any great ideas for a large cab ring 18mm oval.I have never been a great fan of cabs but I have this ring I want to replace the nephrite jade. Something different, I don''t really know what to look for.

how''s that?

mmmm...I love cabochons! What fun...

I prefer lighter toned ones....like beryl (aqua and emerald) and tourmalines. The opaquish, included ones sometimes just glow!

Widget! OMG! Is this another bauble from your treasure chest. I don''t remember seeing this before. It looks like a huge emerald cab with nice color. Love the deco mounting too. The deco cab emerald dangling earrings we saw last Friday would be perfect to go with this.

Oh that makes sense, I love the mystical quality of moonstones. My daughter is a fan of them too.

Moonstones have one serious thing for them : they are inexpensive, while a medium quality ruby of this size will be very expensive (you may go for inexpensive opaque quality but it's not very very nice, anyway, you would get a fine colored red star ruby for a few huntred dollars at most).

One big moonstone in photo (50 Ct, high dome, 22mm round) :

You may also choose some original stones, for instance opaque to semi translucent yellow sapphires.

Thanks, AN and Kaleigh!

I''ve had this for years, and I''ve never posted it. I guess I have mixed feelings about it. It''s a small ring, and that giant ''gumdrop'' looks a little weird to me on my pinky. I hardly ever wear it. Love the mounting, though...aren''t the prongs great?

Here''re some more pictures.

Sorry for the hyjack! Back to cabs. Colorchange, that moonstone is wonderful!

What''s the other dimension of your stone? An oval has to be 18 mm. by something else. If it''s calibrated I''m guessing 12 x 18 mm. but you''ll have to measure.

The size will determine what kind of rough is available to cut in that size/shape and the price of course. Clean natural ruby or sapphire to cut that size would be costly. Opal is an option however.

Amethyst, citrine and ametrine in facet-grade can cut some very attractive stones. So do tourmaline and most of the beryls: aquamarine, morganite and heliodor. The fine red garnets can sometimes be found in that size. If you like green, chrysoprase can be very striking per the image. It''s hard and tough too.

In cabs there are literally hundreds of options if you include translucent to opaque stones: blue and other colored chalcedonies; colorful agates, jaspers, etc. In order for me to be more helpful you''ll have to narrow your colors and other likes and dislikes down some.

most of my rings are cabs! jasper cabs for the most part. and they are huge!

but the more gemmy cabs are drawing my eye now..........ruby and aquamarine especially.

good to know there are other lovers of cabs out there.

Thanks for all the suggestions that moonstone is gorgeous.
Widget, great ring is that an emerald?

Richard I really do like that chrysophrase, the size is 18mmx12mm and the ring is 14k yellow gold with many prongs like a crown.Does that chrysophrase really glow like that in person?Would it be worthwhile replacing my good old Canadian jade that I really don''t like with a chrysophrase and where do I find one with such amazing glow?

Each stone is unique but yes, some pieces have a wonderful "glow" factor. As for finding one, I WILL have a website operating within 2 weeks if I can avoid being ill as I have been lately. The address will be posted here. Chrysoprase remains reasonably priced.

Thanks for your comments and good wishes belle. My illness has been more annoying than else but it''s slowed down work on several projects including the site. I''m back up to speed now.
