The rings arrived at EBTH this morning. They've decided that the rings were in fact damaged per my photos and description (which were probably overkill, admittedly ), and are going to issue a full refund.
They took care of processing the return package and making a determination in six hours.
I wouldn't have any qualms about buying from them again, though next time I'll request additional photos and specify how I want it packaged for shipment - a service provider that remains pleasant and helpful (to use my own earlier words) through a "well, that didn't go as planned" experience is definitely a provider that I will work with in future!
