Looking for opinions when it comes to Princess Cut diamond

Hello all!

I'm looking at purchasing a princess cut solitaire engagement ring. I'm thinking of going with platinum for the ring/setting and trying to determine where I should place most of the "value" of the diamonds that I'm looking at. I would like to stay around $10,000-$13,000 for the diamond. Here is what I've been looking at but I don't know if I can/should increase the size of the stone and "trade" something else such as polish or symmetry to do so:
Carat: 1.48-2.2
Color: D-G
Clarity: F-VS1
Cut: Ideal
Polish: Ideal
Symmetry: Ideal

Personally, I usually put more weight into quality than size/quantity on the things that I purchase. Admittedly, I have only purchased one other diamond in my life and do not know where I should consider a "trade" or what is going to be the best visibly satisfying. Any help and/or advise is very appreciated!

Thanks!

If this one is eyeclean I'd for for this one: http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/10965/

I'd much rather not have those fragile princess corners to worry about.

Did your lady say she wants a princess. Or did she say she wants a square?

Here are some princesses, worth a look. All are AGS0's so they will have ideal light performance.

http://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/princess-cut-loose-diamond-2998693.htm VS2 clarity is fine. You don't need VS1 (heck I linked you to an SI2 above that I'd snap up in a heartbeat). If the VS2 or Si1 is eyeclean it is indistinguishable from a, IF to the naked eye. This diamond gives you ideal light performance combined with the largest spread at 6.5mm square.

She hasn't actually said either way. She has only stated that she wanted a simple solitaire.

How will I know if a VS2 is eye clean or not without actually having it in front of me?

Is EGL worth considering or should I stay with a GIA certified diamond?

Re: Looking for opinions when it comes to Princess Cut diamo

EGL USA can be ok. Avoid the other EGLs. I wouldn't go seeking one out, though. If I really liked something and it happened to be an alternative lab, that is different.

So you don't know if she wants a square stone?

Might she want a round?
How do you know she likes squares? Princesses are risky if you are just taking a stab in the dark.

Does she have a sister, cousin, niece, aunt, best friend you can ask about the shape she likes?
Or even better, does she have a pinterest board? If she does she might have pinned pictures of rings she likes.

So... you need to know more information. YOU REALLY need to know more.

Diamond shape is a very personal thing. I strongly prefer squares and rectangles, but wouldn't want a princess and the only radiant I would consider is a fancy yellow or a Jubilee or Princess of Hearts or Lucida. I don't like rounds unless they are old cuts. And I enjoy pears but only for pendants. And marquise, but only for right hand rings. I love ovals, but my husband doesn't so they were off the list of my engagement ring possibilities.

See what I mean? You've got a great budget. But you need to find out more about what SHAPE stone she wants before you are prepared to spend THOUSANDS on a rock.

She might want an Emerald cut: http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/emerald-cut/1.70-carat-g-color-vs1-clarity-sku-191611

Or a gorgeous oval: http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/oval-cut/1.60-carat-d-color-vs2-clarity-sku-179767

Or a lovely modern cushion: http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/11760/

Or a pretty old cut cushion: http://www.engagementringsdirect.com/2.05-carat-j-si1-royal-chandelier-cushion-brilliant-cushion-cut-diamond-gid-135701.html

Or maybe asschers are her thing: http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/asscher-cut/1.59-carat-g-color-vvs2-clarity-sku-184584

Maybe a superideal round is what will make her happy: http://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-3045749.htm

What you've got right now, in terms of information is the equivalent of going car shopping (for a car you will wear the REST OF YOUR LIFE) and saying that you only know that she wants a sedan.

See what I mean? Does she want four cylinders and fuel efficiency? Or does she want 8 cylinders and power? What color does she like? Does she want a black car? Or a red one? Does she want 2 doors or four?

You need a lot more information my friend. If you want it to be COMPLETE AND UTTER surprise. Then start snooping. If you don't mind getting direct input (what we STRONGLY recommend) then have a conversation with her. Heck show her the links we posted for you in this thread (they are all lovely stones). See what SHE wants on her finger for the rest of her life.

You want to know what the best value is? Getting your lady exactly what SHE wants. Right now, the only thing I can recommend with the amount of knowledge you have is a good return policy.

Exactly! I think that she wants it to be a surprise but I had the same opinion... I wouldn't want someone picking a car out for me or a piece of jewelry that I would be wearing for the rest of my life! She literally has NO rings in our house and very little jewelry to speak of. She has only mentioned that she wanted a simple solitaire and I made her give me a size for the ring that way it would fit from day one. This was done in passing in a local store that doesn't even specialize in jewelry.

I think I'll just tell her that I need more input. All of the stores that I've considered have 30 day return policies with no questions asked. That's my only hope without her input!

You aren't the first that's had this problem. I don't get it myself being the hands on type, but we all vary.

BUT OKAY.

I DO think that you should at least ask her to do this. JUST THIS, will be enough, I think to get your started.

ASK HER TO LOOK AT ONE OF THESE TWO PICTURES. AND TO GIVE YOU HER TOP THREE FAVORITE SHAPES and rate them 1, 2, 3 (with one being her favorite, 2 being her second favorite, and 3 being her third favorite). After she does that... you'll be ready to go.

Re: Looking for opinions when it comes to Princess Cut diamo

I just wanted to stop by and say thanks for the advice! I waited long enough that one of her friends was able to get some information out of her and my design totally changed. Come to find out a square cut center diamond reminded her of an old ring but the emerald cut was elegant to her. Therefore, I found what appears to be a fair price on a 1.73 that is cut to look more like a 2ct+(8.68x5.76x3.83) and went with it as the price appeared to be reasonable at around $10,800.00. Add a ring with a few princess cuts in a channel setting and hope for the best! At least she can return/swap it if she doesn't like the band width or something...

Here's what I went with:

Thanks again!
