..but it needs a new home!

Like most people who write here, I lurked and learned for a while before posting. But I haven''t seen a lot of stones like the one I want to reset, so I thought I''d post it for a little personalized help.

This ring is one my father bought my mother about 25 years ago, and has been mine for the last few years. I have always assumed it was a cloudy emerald, but I have nothing to go on, so I could be wrong. Whatever it is though, I love its opaque look, and want to reset it.

As you can see from the pictures, the stone is barely holding on! The emerald(?) is 5x7mm, and a little scratched on top. (Not sure it''s big enough to recut.) The wedding band I will be wearing in 4 months (!!

) is titanium, so I think I''d like this stone to be set in white gold- although I like gold prongs with green stones.

I have also though of adding side stones- someting not too sparkly. The thread on "Light Blue Sapphires, Drk. Blue Sides" got me thinking. I really liked the green/green combination tonysgeko did.

Anyway, here are the photos. I am thinking simple setting.

I''ve gone ahead and picked a new setting for this stone! It''s nothing like I expected, but we''ll see in two weeks how it works...

This has me thinking more though. Does anyone know if this is an emerald? Or where it could be from? I don''t know much about colored stones.

Hi, Rube:

Can''t wait to see the new ring!

It sure looks like an emerald to me...I imagine the jeweler who''s setting the stone could tell you for sure.

BTW...why not ask him to polish it for you while he''s at it?

I have my fingers crossed for the jeweler as it is... the woman helping me asked why I didn''t want to keep the setting I already had (as the stone jiggled in it''s crooked mount

). But, she''s not the one setting the stone, so I''ll call this afternoon and add that request! Thanks for the thought.

It certainly looks like an emerald to me, too. Nothing else really looks like that! I, too, am a fan of included, lighter emeralds, and I''ve searching for something else that has that look, but nothing really does!

YOu know, if the jiggle was all you were worried about, you just could have gotten the prongs tightened or fixed... but if you were in the mood for somethign different, I don''t see why you shouldn''t go for something new!

What is the setting like? Can''t wait to see it!

velouria-

The original setting itself actually left a lot to be desired, as far as craftsmanship went. Besides the prongs being crooked, somehow the whole mount was a little lopsided. So, I did decide to go for something new. Originally I was thinking nearly the same setting, but instead I ended up with white gold, the band about 4 times thicker. If I could remember the setting better, I could probably do a better job describing it, but I actually can''t!
I''ll post a picture when I get it back...

For those interested... here is my old emerald in her new setting. I am happy with how it turned out, now I just wish I had more stones to set!
