I don't know, probably. I think the ones at places like Macys are. I've asked them about their stones and I think they just said that most sapphires are heat treated ( which is true ). I bet the ones at Mall stores are too.

We seem to understand each other very, very well, Mogok. Only that the guy who inflicted this temptation upon me was a Pakistani dealer, not an American collector. Stones are not supposed to be glowing red or blue when you look into gravel, right? And yes, there must be some anthropology involved in what makes gems universal - agreed with your German friend

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one with this virus.

Mine started when an American gem dealer friend of mine showed me a perfectly shaped octahedral, clean and glowing Sweet Home Rhodochrosite!

That was the start for my search of glowing crystalline gravel..

You raise a good point that there is something special about the stones in a natural state as nature made them.

But one can also get too hung up on it and miss the beauty of a stone that just happens to be heated or even cut.

If i was collecting specimens then id be more picky about it but I still say for jewlery how it looks to the bare eye is the most important quality.

I dont think we disagree that much we are just looking at it from different directions, collecting, specimens, vs daily wear jewlery.

You would be right, particularly in the case of jewelry wear, since the center of attention would be the subject wearing the object.

But in the case of wearing accessories for 'good luck', a different standard may apply.

Some would advise that as little inclusions and other defects be present in a crystal so that its 'vibration' frequency can be as pure as possible.

However, others may advise that inclusions, etc., are what makes certain crystals which have been evolving in the Earth's crust for millions of years great generators of universal wisdom and power.

And, in the case of investment-grade gems, the market value of those gems may depend on the extent of treatment such gems have received.

But you're right about treated or cut stones. In fact, we even get turned on by just looking at their images and photos, which may even turn out be better looking than the real objects themselves!

Hello,
I agree with you all. People are looking at gemstones for different purpose. In my company in Bangkok, we , use to speak about gem quality which is usually gemstones for collectors, connoissors, investors... then there is jewelry quality for gems that will be used to be set in a piece of jewelry and here there are different markets. Then there is the reject quality that can be used by gemological school, as teaching tools, souvenirs,...
None of these stones are good or bad: They can fit to different purpose and make people happy with the money they have spend for them: This is the important thing.
Now everybody looks at gemstones for something that can be different that somebody else. Again there is here no judgement to give. Some love crystals and unheated gems, some are searching nice looking stone to put in the jewelry that they are creating. The stone is secondary as for them the art is is the jewel not really in the stone even if they want the stone to be a minimum of a certain quality, etc...
Then people change with time. Few years ago I was in love with clean clean gems. Now I like gems with inlcusion. I was also thinking about crystals as rocks... Now I love them more than cut stones...
If diamonds quite basic engeneer kind gems, colored gemstones need more gem education to be understood. You can have as a sales person for diamond somebody that knows nothing about gemstones, it become difficult for colored stones and its impossible if you are selling crystals...
Well this is my $0.02 vison of the thing.

All the best,
