lo que tanto aclamamos la noche caer?
sus estrellas sus franjas
flotaban ayer
Oh decid! Despliega aún su hermosura estrellada
sobre tierra de libres,
la bandera sagrada?
English translation:
By the light of the dawn, do you see arising,
what we proudly hailed at twilight''s last fall?
Its stars, its stripes
yesterday streamed
above fierce combat
a gleaming emblem of victory
and the struggle toward liberty.
Throughout the night, they proclaimed:
"We will defend it!"
Tell me! Does its starry beauty still wave
above the land of the free,
the sacred flag?
Its stars, its stripes,
liberty, we are the same.
We are brothers in our anthem.
In fierce combat, a gleaming emblem of victory
and the struggle toward liberty.
My people fight on.
The time has come to break the chains.
Throughout the night they proclaimed, "We will defend it!"
Tell me! Does its starry beauty still wave
above the land of the free,
the sacred flag?

My neighbour is from Canada. He''s here legally, so I have no objection. The fact that he''s a chiropractor is another matter....
Maybe May 1st will come and go and it won''t be a big deal. I live over on the island, and don''t want to get stranded over in San Diego if they close the bridge again...and there has already been some minor violence with the other protests.Date: 4/28/2006 10:48:04 PM

Tawn,
Ya, I''m here in Orange County so people are doing protests here too. Personally I''m going to go on with my day as usual. This is the USA and people do have the right to protest here. But this is my country and like you, I live here legally. I honor the country we live in, I wave the American flag, and I sing the national anthem in English because this is America. I will not let people from other countries tell me what I can do in my own country.
I am quite surprised that so many people all over the US do not know about this! In a way I see this as good and bad. Good because perhaps other parts of the country are not having this problem, and bad because this is a major thing that is happening at least here in California, and I would like to see the nation stand behind us and unite as a nation.
Anyways, good luck down there in San Diego!
I would imagine they came in through Ellis Island or somewhere similar...so they would be all legal and lovely! Do you know the history of how they got here? My husband is Irish and I have the red-haired kid to prove it, but the history is sketchy because his grandfather was adopted by English people or something? My husband and son both have Irish names...Date: 4/29/2006 12:55:56 AM

I guess it''s a good thing this law wasn''t in effect when my ancestors came here from Ireland. Then again, just think if the American Indians had the forthought to pass such a law. Where would we all be right now.
I LOVE North Carolina, especially Nags Head! So gorgeous...Date: 4/29/2006 7:21:17 PM

Actually Tawn, my ancestors came by boat and landed in North Carolina in the mid to late 1800''s. So I guess I''m illegal too. I just feel that anyone wanting a better life for themselves and their families should be allowed to.
As for the red hair, yep, I got it. And, I was such a horrible child that I got a red haired kid to boot.My mother says I''m ''Payin'' for my raisin''
Exactly MINE, it seems pretty straightforward to me too...and I don''t know why anyone would take offense to us saying everyone needs to follow the same laws? I''m curious how someone could think that it was okay to enter illegally and then expect rights?Date: 4/29/2006 9:58:04 PM

Hmmm.... I didn;t post cause I know what I am going to say will heat some things up here. I think that tthere is a difference between immagrating and enter a country illegally. My husband is here legally, he came here legally, he filed for his paper legally and he pays taxes.. legally. He is a guest in this country and acts accordingly. You want to be here legally.. enter legally.

I have been looking at it from my perspective...I''m a permanent resident from Canada who jumped through the hoops, paid lots of $$, did the interviews, took time off work, filled out more forms, paid some more, and finally got my Green card, which is actually pink!!
I personally, would not enter a country illegally and then demand my rights from that country. The only thing I would expect is to be deported for entering illegally!
I also probably wouldn''t wave my Canadian flag while demanding them...but that''s just me!

North America (I''m including Canada because I grew up there) is totally built on Immigrants which has made it a wonderful and diversified place in my opinion. Everyone brings their own bit of history and culture with them and that''s exciting to me!
PS I''m glad you went through the legal system...did you get a cute picture on your card?
So you were cute when you were seven, but not now?Date: 4/30/2006 4:04:48 AM

any illegal immigrants that can sing "The Stars Spangle Banner" in english, should get a green card.Date: 4/28/2006 9:52:07 PM

It's Mayday, a big holiday almost everywhere but in the USA. On a slightly different topic:
'The Star Spangled Banner' was written in English and should be sung in English. Not only that, they changed the English words to make a rhyming translation.

That''s no qualification to automatically get a green card! Now IF they can sing the national anthem in English, then they can GET IN LINE to get a green card.
