I live in San Diego, and we''ve already had a lot of rallies and school walk-outs, etc...

Is this as big of a deal in the rest of the country?

I know that I''m seriously thinking about just staying home that day!

Never even heard of it here in the Midwest...

Perry

just heard on a npr station that a beef packing plant in dodge city, kansas is closing down for that day as they anticipate that their mostly hispanic work force won''t be there. they also said they want to show a united community on this issue.

doesn''t get more bread basket american than dodge city, kansas.....

They''re talking about it being the biggest protest rally since the 60''s Civil Right''s Movement!

One of my friends and I just about got stuck downtown SD a few weeks back when they had to shut the streets down due to all the protestors, and the C/B bridge was closed for several hours. Minor rioting, school closures etc...

Not to be all doom and gloom, but I think May 1st has to potential to be an ugly day in certain parts of America!

I''m lost.

What does the shut down signify. What does the date have to do with it. Sorry I''m so lame here, I''m from Mayberry practically.

yeh, i haven''t heard anything about this either.

?????????????????????? Why? Never heard of this.

why? to point out how much this country and our citizenry depend on immigrant [mostly hispanic] labor.

It''s Mayday, a big holiday almost everywhere but in the USA. On a slightly different topic:

"The Star Spangled Banner" was written in English and should be sung in English. Not only that, they changed the English words to make a rhyming translation.

Lyrics to ''Nuestro Himno'' (''Our Anthem'')

Oh decid! Despliega aún su hermosura estrellada

sobre tierra de libres,

la bandera sagrada?

English translation:

By the light of the dawn, do you see arising,

what we proudly hailed at twilight''s last fall?

Its stars, its stripes

yesterday streamed

above fierce combat

a gleaming emblem of victory

and the struggle toward liberty.

Throughout the night, they proclaimed:

"We will defend it!"

Tell me! Does its starry beauty still wave

above the land of the free,

the sacred flag?

Its stars, its stripes,

liberty, we are the same.

We are brothers in our anthem.

In fierce combat, a gleaming emblem of victory

and the struggle toward liberty.

My people fight on.

The time has come to break the chains.

Throughout the night they proclaimed, "We will defend it!"

Tell me! Does its starry beauty still wave

above the land of the free,

the sacred flag?

Wow! I was almost scared to post about such a controversial subject...I thought I was going to start a huge PS war!

Apparently, there is a law trying to be passed that would make all the Illegal Immigrants...well illegal! Felons actually! And, there is some major upheaval going on here in San Diego and other cities with high immigrant populations. So, from what I understand they are out to shut stuff down prove that they are the ones that basically keep the country running.

I'm a little confused and know that there is more to the whole issue, but I was very interested in some other opinions, and I know you PS'ers have lots of them!

I have been looking at it from my perspective...I'm a permanent resident from Canada who jumped through the hoops, paid lots of $$, did the interviews, took time off work, filled out more forms, paid some more, and finally got my Green card, which is actually pink!!

I personally, would not enter a country illegally and then demand my rights from that country. The only thing I would expect is to be deported for entering illegally!

I also probably wouldn't wave my Canadian flag while demanding them...but that's just me!

My neighbour is from Canada. He''s here legally, so I have no objection. The fact that he''s a chiropractor is another matter....

Tawn,
Ya, I''m here in Orange County so people are doing protests here too. Personally I''m going to go on with my day as usual. This is the USA and people do have the right to protest here. But this is my country and like you, I live here legally. I honor the country we live in, I wave the American flag, and I sing the national anthem in English because this is America. I will not let people from other countries tell me what I can do in my own country.

I am quite surprised that so many people all over the US do not know about this! In a way I see this as good and bad. Good because perhaps other parts of the country are not having this problem, and bad because this is a major thing that is happening at least here in California, and I would like to see the nation stand behind us and unite as a nation.

Anyways, good luck down there in San Diego!

Maybe May 1st will come and go and it won''t be a big deal. I live over on the island, and don''t want to get stranded over in San Diego if they close the bridge again...and there has already been some minor violence with the other protests.

I still think it''s going to be a wild day for America in some of the major cities...I guess we''ll just have to wait and see!

I guess it''s a good thing this law wasn''t in effect when my ancestors came here from Ireland.
20.gif
Then again, just think if the American Indians had the forthought to pass such a law. Where would we all be right now.

I would imagine they came in through Ellis Island or somewhere similar...so they would be all legal and lovely! Do you know the history of how they got here? My husband is Irish and I have the red-haired kid to prove it, but the history is sketchy because his grandfather was adopted by English people or something? My husband and son both have Irish names...

I love the stories about how my ancestors got here (actually Canada) from Scotland in the early 1900''s, and my Dad and his family immigrated from Europe at the end of WW2. They gave up so much in the "Old Country" to start their lives over in North America. Amazing stories...

This current situation only applies to the immigrants that have come in illegally and apparently, from what I understand, the options being argued on the table are to try to make all of the illegal immigrants felons...or create some sort of program that will let them work towards citizenship. At the same time, now they''re talking about closing the borders here in CA and other border states.

Hopefully, there will be a peaceful compromise that satisfies everyone...but I have to admit that I''m a little worried about what may happen in between here and there since I''m just a hop, skip, and jump from the border!

Actually Tawn, my ancestors came by boat and landed in North Carolina in the mid to late 1800''s. So I guess I''m illegal too. I just feel that anyone wanting a better life for themselves and their families should be allowed to.
As for the red hair, yep, I got it. And, I was such a horrible child that I got a red haired kid to boot.

I LOVE North Carolina, especially Nags Head! So gorgeous...

My MIL and husband''s brother and sister are redheads or strawberry blondes and have the personalities that match. My son''s hair is pretty bleached out from the CA sun these days, so it''s the color of yellow gold...and people always assume that it''s dyed! Fortunately, he got the mellow personality! My husband has dark hair but grows this crazy red beard and his redheadedness surfaces every once in a while! One of my best friends is a red-haired Irish NY gal, and she''s just wild!

I''m not sure what the Immigration laws were in the 1800''s, but I think you''re *safe*
31.gif
because you were born here! It''s the 12 million people who have "entered the country illegally" that are currently the issue, apparently because they don''t pay taxes and put a huge strain on the school, and medical systems, etc...

I agree that people should have a chance to better their lives, but I feel that they can, and should, do it legally! They should also be required to pay the taxes and contribute to the system like the rest of the citizens/legal residents have to do. Whether or not we agree with the Immigration and Naturalization Laws, the fact is that it is the law and therefore should apply to all Immigrants whether they *like* them or not.

In my opinion, if you want to live in a county, you should expect to follow it''s laws.

Hmmm.... I didn;t post cause I know what I am going to say will heat some things up here. I think that tthere is a difference between immagrating and enter a country illegally. My husband is here legally, he came here legally, he filed for his paper legally and he pays taxes.. legally. He is a guest in this country and acts accordingly. You want to be here legally.. enter legally.

Exactly MINE, it seems pretty straightforward to me too...and I don''t know why anyone would take offense to us saying everyone needs to follow the same laws? I''m curious how someone could think that it was okay to enter illegally and then expect rights?

Learn the language, fill out the forms, do the interviews, and pay the filing fees. I did...well everything except the language thing because I already spoke English!
1.gif

IMHO If you didn''t enter legally, you shouldn''t be surprised or upset when/if you get deported!

PS Still wondering if May 1st is going to be a day of chaos, or if it will be mellow?

For some reason Dancing Fire always makes me think of the Kevin Costner movie, "Dances with Wolves"!?

North America (I''m including Canada because I grew up there) is totally built on Immigrants which has made it a wonderful and diversified place in my opinion. Everyone brings their own bit of history and culture with them and that''s exciting to me!

PS I''m glad you went through the legal system...did you get a cute picture on your card?

Mine, why should you be timid about sharing this point of view? I think it is wrong not to stand up for our country''s laws. If we don''t let people know how we feel about this, we run the risk of getting run over by other people''s agendas.

of course i was cute

b/c my green card picture was taken when i was seven years old. it was return to the INS when i got my U.S. citizenship in 1976.

here''s what the INS should do.....

put out a national bulletin. saying that on july 4th is a day of freedom. anybody that is here illegally will get a green card by showing up at different locations around the U.S., and when these illegal immigrants shows up they will be deported back to their country of origin. that will save the U.S. government a lot of time and money by self delivery.

I have the Jennifer Aniston haircut in mine! I have 2 years before my Green (Pink) card expires, and have started filling out my paperwork to become a citizen because my husband is actually having problems getting some super secret spylike security clearance that he needs for work.

My Dad, who immigrated from Europe to Canada with his family at the end of WW2, has to carry around a "Landed Immigrant" photo ID for proof of citizenship!

That''s no qualification to automatically get a green card! Now IF they can sing the national anthem in English, then they can GET IN LINE to get a green card.
