Please meet Ophelia, my new 3.77ct OP VS1 OEC in reproduction Georgian collet setting.
Whilst I love my modern, minimalist two-stone between-the-finger ring (link), sometimes a girl just wants a romantic solitaire. And, being the OEC lover I am, I wanted both the antique vibes and the protection that a Georgian collet provides. I knew from past experience that my sweet spot for OECs is in the 3.5-4ct range (the OEC in my two-stone is 3.48ct).
I have to admit that once I won Ophelia at auction, I started to panic as I made the purchase unseen with my own eyes: in particular, the shallow 54% depth. Luckily, she performs well except the facets under the itty bitty 47% table, which can be a bit mushy and don’t always light up like the rest of the stone.
It took some time to decide whether this was a deal-breaker for me and eventually I reasoned that (1) I am okay with non-ideal stones, especially when they’re antique and perform decently, (2) I like the setting and it fits well, and (3) I don’t have the energy to look for another one (!)
To go into the setting a bit more: it’s an oxidised silver collet with a semi-pave RG shank. I love the look of the bright silver “claws” with the oxidised silver “bezel”. The RG with single-cut melee brings romance to the setting, and the thick bezel adds finger presence.
I’d seen plenty of warm OECs before so the OP colour - which changes from white to buttery in different lighting - didn’t bother me, and VS1 is plenty mind-clean for me.
Could I find a better cut stone? Absolutely. But I have been enjoying Ophelia much more than I expected!
Key stats:
(With a 6ct moissanite pear I found on Vinted!)
Comparison of the two at the bank vaults - unfortunately I don’t have glamour shots of the two together
