I'll let NKOTB answer the first two questions but I can fill in the blanks for the third question. Garnets are not everyday wear stones but are durable enough for occasional wear RHRs. MZ has a garnet for an e-ring and she wears it with a lot of care but even so, it is already showing wear and tear. So yes, it is fine to wear it in a ring but do exercise caution and awareness of what your hand is doing.
