Ooh, this is so exciting!! I hope we can all survive the next three weeks--the anticipation is just too much!! I can''t even imagine how you feel, kaleigh! It''s a lot of sleeps but it will all be worth it!!!

Thanks guys!!! Just got off the phone with Pete and gave him my all important credit card number so work can begin!!! I will have cads by next Friday to post for your viewing pleasure. They will come in pieces as the halo is one cad, the shank another and maybe the gallery is the third. I told him to make it in a size 5 full and they will be using E-F VS stones in the mele.

deliciously blinding!

Wow, it''s going to be fabulous! It''s kind of hard to envision the final design by seeing the parts, but knowing Quest''s work, it''s going to be amazing! I can''t wait to see it!!

BrightSpot did they do yours in parts??? I don't remember, but don't think they did. Yeah it will be tough to tell huh???

Quest didn''t even do cads for my ring. every time they tried and then cast it never came out right so they ended up doing the whole thing by hand. i never got to see a cad, wax, nothing...i had to rely on blind faith and lots of supportive emails from nan and diamondlil

I don''t think they did brightspots cad in one piece because parts of here ring were handmade too. either way, you can be 100% confident that your ring will come out exactly like you want it to or they will redo it. You have nothing to worry about, it''s going to be absolutely fabulous

Thanks mrssalvo, you made me feel better. I know they will do an awesome job, just was confused.

i totally do not understand how the cads to cast thing works but I think they draw it in the pieces they will cast it in because there machines can''t just ''make'' what is drawn if it''s super complex. could be wrong of course

it will be fun to see what they actually come up with and show you

Ok a question here. If they do cads, does that mean they are machine made??? I''m thinking it would be nice to have it hand made???? I am soooo clueless on this.

I know Mark Morrell does cads and still hand makes his rings. Leon uses his own hand drawings unless he''s changed it recently. Better ask Pete to be sure what they are planning on doing. I think parts of diamondlil''s and Brightspots rings were cast and sections were done by hand. If you want it all handmade, i''m sure they will do it for you, just make sure they know that.

I'm utterly clueless about this too. I wonder if someone should start a thread asking how the process works, from creating the CAD and then converting it into a piece of jewelry. I'm even confused about the difference between "hand made", casting, hand forging, etc etc..

Of course, they'd have to explain all this in a language a complete idiot like me could understand!!!

I don''t want hand made....to me hand made means it might be a little sloppy and not perfect perfect. I want perfect perfect!

My take on this, is that cads are generated so you can see the design and make changes as necessary. But have no clue whether the ring is cast or hand made. Guess we will all learn as I go along in this process. maybe Platinumsmith can chime in. Cause I have no clue.

I belive that CADS are used to do cad/cam work. My BF makes little models of machine parts all the time with such things. However I dont see any reason why if you asked them they would not make it by hand, what does it say on their web page? in their emails to you?

Matatora, so cad images are generated to be machine made??? I will call them tomorrow and will let you guys know what they have to say. I thought they were just images to let you know how the ring will look once completed. I will ask them whether it should be machine made or not. But something tells me that Hand made will be more expensive. Man am I confused. I love what MMM said, Perfection is key to me, and will see what they have to say. I want it all, cads, wax pics, etc....

i''m with you here. I like things to be as perfect as possible. Quest did a fab job on my ring though but i would have been just as happy if it would have been cast.

mrssalvo, if you were me what would you choose for this setting?????

if you really want a handmade piece i am fully confident that the Quest guys have the skills to do it right. the detail they can do is amazing and right up there with the leon''s IMO. I would talk to Pete and see what he was planning to do and why and then go from there.

Thanks mrssalvo. I did not get a chance to call Quest today. I had to take Ashley to visit a college today and just got back. So maybe I can call them tomorrow, not sure if they are open on Saturday''s. Will let you guys know what I find out, thanks!!!

Ill see if i can dispel some of the confusion:

The vast majority of custom rings are made by casting.
If a wax is involved its cast.
Then it is hand finished.

Cad drawings are created
Then either by machine or hand the wax is made to match the drawings
The the wax is used to make the mold for the metal.
The ring is then poured ie metal injected into the mold.
The mold is then broken away leaving the rough ring.
The ring is then polished and finished by hand and
any stones set.

...........
The other way is to bend and weld and solder and shape wire into the finished product to match the cads.
It is a much more expensive way of doing it.
............
The third way is to stamp them out of strips of metal.
........
The forth way is to take parts made by either or all of the above methods and solder or weld them together to create the ring.
.........
The final results when done with the same skill are pretty much the same.
95% of the results are in the final finishing.

Thanks Storm, that helps a lot.

I just talked to Pete at Quest and my ring will be 95% casted and 5% handmade. The head of the ring when put onto the shank will be soldered. Does that sound good???

Lisa, I am so excited for you. This ring sounds as if it is going to be a showstopper!!!!! I love asschers as well. Rounds and asschers are my favs. I can''t wait to see the finished ring.

Shay

Thanks Shay. I had such problems with another jeweler and can''t wait for this stone to finally have a beautiful home. I bought it back in July. Cads will be ready by this Friday.

I can''t wait until friday. I think the ring is going to be exactly how you want it. I would trust Pete completely and I really think you''ll appreciate the pieces that are cast as well as the handmade portions. It''s going to be wonderful.

Thanks mrssalvo. I wish tomorrow was Friday. This has been a project for me since July, thank god for Pete. We should have a thread for all the beautiful Quest rings here on PS!!!!!!
