Hello All,
This is my first post and English is not my first language so please be indulgent

So, I'm engaged since august 2010 and my futur husband give me an amazing Ballerine Cartier, round diamond, in platinum. It have been resize by Cartier to fit my finger size (larger than the original one). One week ago, I notice two crack where I guess they resize the ring. The ring is now on the way of Cartier Toronto Boutique (I'm from Montréal) and I can't wait to hear what they will do with it!!!

Is it normal? I'm sure my futur husband choose Cartier to give me the best of the best!! What do you think Cartier should do?

Thanks in advance for you comments/answer!

Oh, how awful. For what it's worth, I don't think it "broke" - it sounds like the join wasn't properly soldered, and it cracked along the seam. It happens sometimes, and it's an easy fix.

As for what they should do? Well, fix it, gratis, for one, and apologize most sincerely for the stress and inconvenience. Beyond that, I think it's up to the store manager - some of them do things like small consolatory gift certificates, some of them don't. I hope your location comes through for you.

Hi Circe,

And do you think that can happen again? Can it happen when I will have the ring for like 5 years or is it really just a bad *soldered*?

I don't think they will give us any kind of gift. They told us to ship the ring (at the cost of $250!) and we ask them to pay for it (what they did)...

thanks a lot! I begin to feel better!

I am shocked that Cartier has this level of workmanship.

:nono: of course they should compensate you for shipping the ring to the location.

Yes, it does sound like a poor soldering job after the resize - and yes, as Circe said, if that's it it's an easy fix. An apology is definitely also in order.

I'm sure it's easy to fix. I had my ring sized when I got engaged, and 15 years later I lifted something heavy and it cracked cleanly where it had been sized, although there was so visual line in the metal all those years! I had it repaired no problem. Best of luck.

Yeah, anytime a ring is sized like that there seems to be a weak point there. I see a lot of poor sizing jobs at work and a lot of them do split, but not as many as you'd think, even with obviously shoddy workmanship.

No, it shouldn't happen... but it sometimes does. I think solder can be done in such a way that it's weak, even if the join looks OK. I had an antique platinum ring that I suspected had been sized up and when my jeweler went to fix it, he just tugged on the shank with pliers gently and the whole section that had been added popped right out. Apparently whomever had done the sizing had used white gold solder on PT, which is unfortunately common, but makes for a weak soldering job.

Incredibly lame that they wanted you to pay for shipping :nono: that would be truly irritating!
