before i go into the details, i have to preface this little story with the fact that i''m actually very laid back about my hair. it''s pretty easy hair. it had been pin straight growing up, but now it''s getting a bit of a wave to it which i was liking a lot. i''ve had it long, short and medium. no tears have ever been shed. until saturday.

on saturday morning i had long, beautiful blonde hair that fell somewhere around the middle of my back. it was the longest i''ve ever had it and it was in dire need of getting the split ends chopped off. i went to a respectable salon (though i''ve never been there before b/c i''m relatively new to the area) and brought along a picture for reference because i can never verbally describe what i''m looking for. it was easy. one inch off, longer layers, side swept bangs around the face. simple. well this cute, nice lady convinced me that i needed to go a little shorter because of all of the split ends and i agreed thinking that healthy hair is a good idea, to an inch below my shoulder -- nothing drastic because i told her I was getting MARRIED in 4 months.

she made the rough cut and we seemed to be on the same page, still below my shoulder. then went back in for the "style" cut or whatever they do and before i knew it my hair is sitting above my shoulders. just like that. a matter of moments. my hair gone. i was kind of in shock, because she clearly had heard what i told her and just did what she wanted.

i left and everytime i caught my reflection i couldn''t help thinking that i look like a newscaster. ahhhh!!!???!!! a newscaster. grrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!

so, i have 4 months until the wedding. the thing is my hair grows sooooo slowly. do vitamins help it along? any recommendations? it is still long enough that someone could put it into an updo.

i hate that lady.

argh! i am soooo sorry to hear this ll

i feel your pain. that said, i have always thought that having an updo is the best style for a wedding. it epitomizes gracefullness and beauty. and the benefit is, your hair will be a much more managable length now. i hope you will be able to enjoy finding that perfect style for your perfect day. let''s see some updo''s!
36.gif

thanks virgina.

i was most upset for the hour after it happened, but now it''s done and i can''t change it, so i''m accepting it. i just hate looking like a newscaster. seriously.

i might go someplace else to see if they can modernize it a bit, but i''m thinking that maybe the last thing i need to do right now is get another haircut. i can still do an updo, but i no longer have the half up/half down option.

OMG!

Did she charge you for the cut? I certainly hope not.

Vitamins help strengthen (not straighten
20.gif
) your hair (at for me they did) but as far as growing faster I'm not sure. Have you looked into having extensions put in for your wedding...something temporary and not too damaging.

OMG, I'm so angry for you.
29.gif

Ohh Lulu!! I''m so sorry

I hate it when hairdressers get carried away with their scissors. I''m sorry, but the looking like a newscaster line cracked me up!!! Hee hee
3.gif
Did she get the layers and swept bangs right? In a few days I''m sure you''ll feel better about it. Actually if your hair isn''t too high above your shoulders, I think it could get back to just below in 4 months! Good luck!

thanks belle. part of accepting this new chop job was putting a positive spin on it and it definately took me less time to get it dried this morning so that is a bonus...

i was leaning towards an updo anyway, but i thought that i might just want to "let my hair down" at the reception. sorry for my bad joke

i think that i''m not the extention kind of a girl. but i''ll wait and see until closer to the wedding and if i''m still hating the new short hair i''ll rethink that position

the most irritating part is that the lady was like "you still have long hair"

obviously a very relative term

My friend cut my hair one day (she''s a hairdresser) and I told her that I was growing out my hair and didn''t want to cut the layers ..unless absolutely necessary. I ended up with more layers than I came in with and a shorter hair cut.
29.gif

I was thinking, if you wanted to have the up/down do, that you could get extentions for the evening..although I don''t know much about extensions to know if that''s possible.

OMG!!! I am so sorry for you!!! I feel your pain, I have really long hair and am pretty low maintenance about it until it''s time for a cut - when I say trim, I MEAN TRIM!!!
The upside is that you have several months before the wedding and I have heard that prenatal vitamins do help hair grow faster. I think it means ALL of your hair will grow faster, so you''ll probably go through a lot of razors too! :P
Good luck! I''m sure you look beautiful!

I have heard the same thing, that prenatal vitamins (ie. ones with a lot of Folic Acid) help your hair grow stronger and faster. Fingernails too. Hey, it can''t hurt, right?

I think I would be screaming livid mad if I were in your shoes too! I desperately want about 6" off my hair but not until AFTER the wedding.

Newscaster...that''s hilarious and I feel your pain! Don''t you hate feeling frumpy??

Sunkist--I have very curly hair too and my heart jumped a little when I read Caribou''s post about vitamins straightening hair. Wouldn''t that be LOVELY!?! I spend way too much $$ getting my hair thermally straightened.

Sorry ladies...didn''t mean to get you all exctied.

I have wavy/curly hair.....I used to hate it.

But now, I love it..I think I look so much better with my hair in it''s natural state and it''s easier and healthier I don''t blow dry it as much.

I''ve noticed that mine is alot curly than it was when I was younger.

ooh I''d be pissed!!!!

I swear every time I get my hair cut it''s always shorter than I wanted... but ah well. nothing you can do now.... I heard ths same thing about those vitamins.. maybe I should check that out myself!

I am so sorry to hear this!! I would have given that woman a piece of my mind!

Try the vitamins, look into updo options, I''m sure your wedding will be perfect either way!!

LL-

I am so sorry! This happenned to me a few years ago- I had long hair, and went to get my hair cut by someone new. He was this really stylish, good looking guy at a really nice salon near me. I wanted "something different." He suggested going shorter. Well, I only understood what "going shorter" meant when I felt the razor he was using to cut on the back of my neck!!! I almost cried right there in the chair. I LITERALLY had to hold in my tears. I walked out of that salon with hair shorter than my boyfriend''s- I am not exaggerating. He put so many choppy layers in it it took me almost 2 whole years to grow out completely!! So, I TOTALLY understand your pain.

Dont worry, you have till the summer, right? And, actually, if you did have a lot of split ends/dryness, it was probably for the better. Your hair will grow in time for the wedding, for sure. Like the other said- definitely take pre natal vitamins- they work! My friends/co -workers (we are all labor and delivery nurses) swear by them and have the docs bring them for us from their offices. They really work! Your hair and nails will grow like crazy!

Good luck!
-Danielle

ps did u decide what you will do for a w-band?

I am so sorry about your hair! Some hairstylists are so awful! I am a hairstylist ( on Newbury Street in Boston) and I think that one of the reasons I am ALWAYS busy is I never decide things for my clients. I listen. If anything I cut less, not more. I would not get another haircut. Keep what you have. Now is not the time to experiment. Just save the length you have. I would not have extensions put into your hair. The only ones that look realistic are Greatlengths, and you will pay a fortune! Also you can see how they are attatched when you put your hair up. They will say you can''t, but yes, you can. I think that what you need to find is someone who will do an updo, and put in an extension piece. Make sure you do a practice before. I think you have enough hair to put up, but you want to have some hair left over to balance out the back. We did a fashion show a few months ago and used pieces on almost all the models, it looked great! Eat lots of protein and take vitamins, it will grow. Tiffany

sorry lulu, that sucks! but like what the previous poster said, cutting off split ends will def help the hair grow faster, so maybe it''s nota s bad as you think! you have 4 months, and the prenatal vitamin thing sounds promising! and according to my hair lady, you really only need ~3/4-1 inch of hair below the chin to do an updo, so yu''ve got plenty to spare!

Hi there,

I just wanted to correct something that I saw in a previous post. Cutting off split ends will not make your hair grow faster. Nothing that you do to the ends of the hair will affect the speed at which hair grows out of your head. Besides, if you just had that much hair cut off, you won''t have split ends for a long time. The reason I tell people to trim their hair while they are growing it out is that some people take it to the extreme and go for a year without cutting their hair. When I am growing out my hair, I cut it every three to four months. If I were in your situation, the only thing I would cut would be my bangs. Trust me, I know my stuff. I was just voted the Stylist of the Year for Boston. www.bostoncolorist.com

As a former stylist Lulu, I really think you should go back and tell this woman how you feel, that you made it quite clear the length you wanted left and how you feel she disregarded her wishes. EVERY STYLIST SHOULD BE ESPECIALLY CAREFUL when tending to the hair of a soon to be bride, especially if she wants an updo
29.gif

Hopefully it will make her realize and save anyone else from having to go through it.

Now, hair grows on average about half an inch a month or thereabouts, so you have time, a couple of inches will make a big difference! Pamper your hair and relax, hair is never as good the first week or so after a fresh cut, it takes it a little while to settle down. Also on the plus side, having those spilt ends cut off will help strengthen your hair and do it good. Hair normally grows like the clappers once it has had a good cut, it will be fine! Also, I have done many updos for various occasions including Brides for many years, you would be surprised at how short the hair can be and STILL manage to get it up and looking good, you would never know!

thanks guys!

i''m definately going to have a hair trial or maybe two. i also think that with 4 months, i''ll have enough length to get it up into a smashingly gorgeous updo and if not i''ll investigate further into maybe a hair piece to add some length to the updo, but not extensions. i know that people get them and i''m sure that they look super on some people, but i can''t imagine hot gluing hair to my head...

i just hate that i went from feeling pretty to feeling dowdy at this time -- so close to my wedding. but i did a little retail therapy
3.gif
and got a great pair of espadrille pumps that make me feel sexy despite my new coif.

Oh, lulu, sorry you had to go through this. I''ve had many a bad haircut that has left me in tears because I have curly hair and many people just don''t know how to cut it! But as others have said, you still have plenty of time for your hair to grow and it''s probably much healthier now.

Just a small note on the extensions. I have hair that goes past my shoulders--I blow it out to keep it straight and it''s fairly long. Anyway, for my wedding, I wanted a wavy, romantic look so my hair person used rollers, a curling iron and EXTENSIONS!! You wouldn''t believe how easy it was to for her to attach them. There is no glue involved. They simply clip on and you can''t tell the difference, it looks just like your own hair. For me, they gave me a little bit more length because once my hair was curled, it looked shorter and I wanted that long dramatic look. If you decide not to go with an updo, don''t rule out the extensions. They are really easy for a professional to attach and they really are a lot of fun. I felt super glamorous with them in--I even slept with them and went to my brunch the next morning with them still attached and looking great! I would love to use them again. Just so you know, you do have options and time so don''t sweat it. Definitely go for a few trials and see what you like...

Not to hijack your thread but just wanted to show you that extensions are a viable option! Here we are doing a little Armenian folk dance at my wedding. You would never know that my hair wasn't real! Sadly I see that my dress was all screwed up but that's ok!

LOL at the newscaster reference- I think we all have an idea of what that looks like!

The same thing happened to me- I went into a salon I had never been to before and come out practically bald. Ok, bald is a relative term but it was horrifying. Not only had she razored off all of my hair, she had somehow made the top of my hair/head poufy and the bottom half ridiculously thin and straggly-looking. Basically, she gave me a tail (thin hair at the bottom that came to a point- NOT CUTE! From now on I will say "NO!" to any stylist who comes near me with a razor). Perhaps I should start shelling out the big bucks on Newbury Street instead of staying local!

Now in your case, where the bangs came out nice and the style is good, albeit shorter than you had hoped, I would definitely not cut it again! I, however, went to GreatCuts, and had my tail removed- made my hair even shorter but it looked WAY less strange.

SDL, I''m not positive exactly how she put them in but they were basically "clipped" into my own hair. Like underneath where my real hair is at the bottom/back of my head! Does that make any sense?! They matched the color of my hair and nobody knew the difference. This was definitely one of my splurges--it was $300 to do my hair. Of course it is NYC and my hair and makeup people came to me so they charged more because they did it onsite. I know, I''m insane but I loved my hair person and she worked on me for over an hour. Plus, I got to keep the extensions and the pretty hair clips! I was so happy with the end result that for me it was worth spending the money.

Okay, I don''t mean to hijack...

BUT...

I want to thank CurlyGirl for giving the info on the extensions. My stylist suggested this as an option and I was like "Oh, no, no, no, that would just be weird". But, I see that I was wrong. I am going to talk about this again with her b/c your hair looks fabulous!! What groom wouldn''t love that look on his bride?

And...

Congratulations to Tiffany1976! Awesome achievement! Let me know if you ever need a hair model in LA, okay?

Hair is basically made of keratin which is a type of protein...

1) eat lots of protein
2) take lots of vitamins
3) massage your scalp (the extra blood flow might help!)
4) DON''T STRESS! this WILL make your hair fall out.

The above might not help but they certainly can''t hurt and I do notice my hair and nails grow faster when I am eating a protein and calcium rich diet...

Good luck!

Here''s my three bridesmaids'' hair from my wedding. BM at top left has chin length hair - you can see the curls at the nape of her neck. Blonde BM on top right has just-above-shoulder-length hair. BM on bottom has shoulder-length hair. So take comfort - updos can be done with very short hair quite easily! With four months to go, you should be just fine to do an updo.

Great example of what I was trying to say JCDC, you will be fine and I am sure you will have plenty of hair to work with Lulu.
