My handmade velvet ring box and cushion halo earrings

Niel, have you start? What color are you making?

It's only 830 here and I haven't gone to the store yet, I was planning on buying whatever color I could find/ felt the nicest. I have a feeling it'll be like black or red or something, as those seem to be the common colors. I wish I could find a polka dot velvet. I saw online a cool velvet that had small gold polka dots on green velvet. I'd be all over that but it was only about 2cm wide.

Last question. What did you use for the sponge?

I bought a bag of sponge they use for applying foundation. About us $5 for 30 piece. They are from Japan, good quality!

Hmm ok. Ill have to think what stores sell them in the states. A lot of times the ones I see are round and flat,or rectangular. Regardless, I was planning to go to the stone today to check it out.

Try sephora or walmart? If you can't find those, just pick those for washing dish.

I'm having a hard time finding velvet ribbon! I went to three stores and none of them had any…and one was a fabric store.

I'm thinking I might have to order some.

You can use velvet fabric too if they are not too expensive. I use ribbon coz it only need a small portion for the box and I dun want to invest so much.

Britex has nice color velvet ribbons.

Thanks fussykiki, yes, I started looking for velvet fabric but I couldn't find any, and just got tired and gave up! Thanks for the tip about Britex.

Niel, let me know what kind of velvet you find, and where!

Hi! Thank you so much for posting the "how to" for the ring box. I am going to try and make one later today, but one that holds two rings. I couldn't find velvet ribbon either...store was out so I bought fabric and got one that felt really nice. Limited velvet selection, so I got the rich red one and will be using complimentary cranberry ribbon. I can't wait! :)

Love your earrings! :)

Lovesvintage, you've convinced me to go back and get some really cheesy "sort of" velvet ribbon I saw in one store (even though I have to buy the whole roll!), I'm really anxious to try this. I hope I can find good quality velvet eventually though.

Hi junebug17!

I went to Joann's fabric store, in case you are wondering. The fabric was on sale for 40% off.

Ok, quick question…what is cardboard paper? I'm not familiar with it, but I've never really looked for it. In the pics it looks a little thinner than regular cardboard, can I get it at a craft store?
It's often called CHIPBOARD. Sometimes 12 point cardstock. Depends where you get it.

Beautiful earrings!

Fantastic box! :appl:
Thanks for sharing.

Dang, that's where I went! I didn't see any velvet fabric, but I should have asked someone, I think I'll go back today - thanks loves vintage! Awesome you got it on sale too.

Same! I went to three FABRIC stores and none of them had any. I asked a clerk at each store and every time it went like this "yes, its right over there by the ribbon"...." Oh guess we dont"

:wall: lol

My trip to the store(s) was an epic failure.

I know, right? You would think a fabric store would have it :wall: I thought finding the ribbon would be the least of our problems lol! I was really all set to do this, frustrating!

I'll look around on -line and see what I can find - I checked out the site suggested by fussykiki (Britex) but I don't think most of the velvet ribbon is the right width :read: A few are - if my math is right and 4 cm is equal to 1.5 inches.

No luck here with the velvet ribbon either, or the chipboard. Looks like I'll be shopping online!

Hi all!

I just wanted to share my first trial run, which is kinda wonkie. I am pleased that it turned out, but disappointed at myself for some of the rookie mistakes I made. It is definitely a lot harder using velvet fabric. You gotta be very tight with the fabric or it ends up bunching too much, which is what I thought I could fix with folding it along the way...big mistake! I will definitely make another better version, of course. :)

I modified the steps in the following way to make room for a wedding set and for the top to stay on better. It measures about 4 cm x 4 cm x 4 cm.

Box: 1.8 cm x 14.8 cm; 1.4 cm x 14.8 cm (3.7 cm)
Liner: 3.3 cm x 1 cm for lid; 3.3 cm x 2 cm for bottom
Lid and Bottom cover: 3.3 cm
Inside lid for top: 3 cm
Foam: 1 inch thick that is cut 3 cm x 3 cm = three 1 cm x 3 cm sections

I also lined the inside lid with leftover cotton quilting batting to have a soft cushion for the top of the rings in case it touches the inside lid.

Hope this helps everyone and have fun! :)

Oh, and as for the cardboard, I cut up the cereal box. :) You can always go buy the correct supply though, if you want.

great job! Is the white fabric just quilt backing? I couldn't find anything when I searched for stain cloth

Hi LuckyKellyK! It was a typo by OP? It should be satin cloth. I just used a leftover quilting scrap that I had on hand and cotton batting.

Oh, haha! I should have figured that out. Thank you! I couldn't tell it was satin since it was white. I will probably start with quilting fabric too and maybe switch to satin later if im feeling fancy :)

Hahahah. It was a typo! Yes, it should be satin. Or you can use white color silk ribbon.

Lovely box, lovesvintage! I love the color of your velvet!

I used the package of my night cream for my first box too. I think any paper in that thickness can do. Just that my brother got those cardboard for me, so I just use it.

Lovesvintage, wow, that looks great!!! :appl: Great suggestion about the cotton batting. Thanks for the heads-up about the velvet fabric. I have a feeling I'm going to fail miserably at this.

Ok, went back to Joanns and it turns out they keep the velvet behind the cutting table because it's expensive…they only had 3 colors so I got maroon. I think I bought cardboard that's too thick but I'll figure it out.

Going to give this a try but I think it's going to take me a while (if I'm even able to do it at all  )…probably see you all in 2 weeks lol!

I ended up ordering pretty much all my supplies online. I will be attempting these two colors. I hope the velvet is nice!

Oooh, very pretty LuckyKelley!
Do you mind sharing the company you got the velvet from?

Sure! It's ribbonretreat.com I got a yard of each velvet plus 5 yards of each matching grosgrain ribbon (those were the minimums) for less than 10 dollars after shipping. They have 30 colors of velvet. Hope it's nice! Eta the ribbon is all 1.5 inch.

Very pretty velvet color cloices LuckyKellyK! I can't wait to see everyone else's boxes too. Thanks again fussykiki for getting us started! :)
