I found a beautiful star sapphire at a local jewelry store and would like to know if it is overrpiced or reasonable. I haven't seen the appraisal yet, but I was told it comes with an independent third party appraisal for $2700 (the appraisal is a couple of years old). I tried looking online to see what high end 4-5ct deep blue, but NOT black star sapphires are going for, but couldn't really find anything similar. Any suggestions and where to look? I checked out NSC and Simply Sapphires - any other suggestions?

It's about his color http://www.simplysapphires.com/images/imagesstars2006/bluestar794-6.jpg but with a way nicer star and the stone itself is much cleaner.

Thanks for the help!

Value will also depend on the transparency of the body, the body colour and the star itself (how centered and well the star moves, the strength of the star) and if the sapphire has been treated (diffused). Have you checked AJS for ballpark pricing?

Thanks Chrono. I need to take a better look at the stone today. I do know that the star itself is incredible and they stated that the appraisal says it's natural (no treatment), but I haven't read it. The color is very nice, but I'm not sure if it's considered translucent or semi-translucent or what, but hopefully the appraisal will tell me that.

It's a high end jewelry store, so I have no doubt that it's not a "bargain", but it certainly looks to be a nice stone... much more info is needed before I make a decision.

Thanks for the suggestion of AJS, that was helpful.

I recently bought a star sapphire, about 3cts, lavender in color. I love the transparency, I can literally read through the stone when I place it over a paper. :twirl:

But it's really hard to say without photos of the stone itself..
