I just came back from a jeweler. I need advise on the diamond I saw. Here are the specs. What does everyone think? Is it a good diamond?

Round Brilliant

Measurements: 7.73 - 7.78 x 4.84 mm

Carat Weight: 1.80 carat

Color Grade: H

Clarity Grade: VS2

Cut Grade: Very Good

Proportions:

Depth: 62.4%

Table: 58%

Crown Angle: 35.0°

Crown Height: 15.0%

Pavilion Angle: 41.4°

Pavilion Depth: 44.0%

Star length: 50%

Lower Half: 80%

Girdle: Thin to Slightly

no, it has too steep a pavilion angle for it''s crown angle.

The pavilion angle usually needs to be between 40.6 and 41.0. Tell him you only want to see GIA Excellent cut stones. Those are not all equal, but it''ll get you into the right ballpark.

Ditto, and also AGS "0" stones are a safe bet for him to show you.

Thritto! I actually had a GIA "excellent" that was a pretty poor performer, and I''m not the only one. Do a search on the GIA''s cut grading system and you''ll see why. Sticking to AGS-0 diamonds is safer if you want to go the easy route. If you want to get technical, there are very specific numbers to go by to get the most ideal cut, which means the best sparkle and light return. If you get the numbers from the certificate, you can run them through the HCA in the tools link at the top of the page. It helps weed out bad perfomers. Good luck!

Thritto. This is what we call a steep deep, in other words the crown and pavilion angles aren''t a good fit for each other. Use the guideline DS gave above for the pavilion angle and that will help.
