I am not sure why no one else got this stone before I did, but I looked at it for several days before asking about it. Now I need setting ideas. I have several other projects going so it may be the first of the year before I get it set, or maybe not, but I am thinking some sort of an east-west ring or maybe a pendant...maybe a faux tension setting? What do you think? It's a spinel from Dan Stair, and he says it has a rolling flash in the hand, which is one reason I am thinking of a ring, but it might make a cool pendant as well. I think the setting would need to be simple since the cut is a bit busy on it's own. I don't have the stone in hand yet...soon though.

The stone is 4.66 x 7.02mm, .84 ct

Thats a really nice stone! I looked at it but its way too small for what I would need it for :nono:

E/W sounds like a good plan as its on the daintier side.

I know it's not an appropriate setting...but I keep coming back to something like a tension setting with the stone floating between a simple band or something like that. Are there good keywords for the imitation tension setting for use in searches?

I think LD set a very similar shaped stone in an elongated cushion LOGR. I'm not sure what your budget is, but if you don't want custom, that's an option.

I was thinking something like a JKT E/W setting with the bezel higher up on the E/W sides and very low on the N/S sides.
Sort of a setting like this...

Lovely stone! E-W would be lovely :) I recently set a stone with a very similar cut E-W into a 4 prong RB setting and thing it turned out really nice-can't wait to see how you decide to set it.

Would love to see pics of the ideas mentioned...will try and find LD's picture.

NICE stone. :cheeky:

I keep picturing it hung vertically as a pendant with a little diamond dangling beneath it.

That sounds nice too...and I have a little diamond leftover from another project that I used the gold from...hmmm.

LovingDiamonds...that is a very similar shape, though mine is a bit longer, I think. Gives me some options and ideas. I also saw Freke Child's "Big Blue" in another thread...that is a cool setting, but probably more than I want to spend as I saw it on the originator's website after researching one of her previous posts...I find that I have very similar taste to her (well to several folks here..she has more examples though!).

It did not arrive yet, and I had it sent to work, so I won't see it till next Friday as I'm traveling Monday through Thursday, darn it. I love the options proposed...gives me something to think about and to play with on paper this week while I'm waiting.

I need to take photos as I've got several other new stones that I haven't taken pictures of yet...not anything really special, but i like them nonetheless...more or less fun stones that I picked up on my last business trip at a local rock and gem store. Saving up for something really special, though!

This is a toughie. I was thinking of a rectangular cushion too but don't know how much overhang the sides will have.

Hi Largosmom,

I think the E-W setting would be lovely. Is that the spinel that was described as having a tanzanite-like color? It looks like a very beautiful color!

It's funny so many people are suggesting the EW ring setting because that is exactly what I was thinking as well. I'd put some diamond accent stones on each side. I can't wait to see what you do. Very pretty stone.

Beautiful stone.

I'm feeling two colors of metal - rose and white.

Found this pic today and thought of your stone! Have you made any setting decisions?

Thanks, that is just what I had in mind for that stone. I love the cut, but It will be a challenge to set because it has a pretty big tilt window. It's possible that it it may perform better in a vertical than in a horizontal setting. I need to find a setting or two to play with and see what happens.

I don't come with any setting ideas, but just to say how lovely your spinel looks. Hope to see more pics.

You can do a pseudo tension setting for a spinel where it looks like a tension set from the top, but it has a bridge or wire support underneath the stone. Have you tried playing around with the spinel in the vertical position yet?

I took it to my jeweler's today, actually and he was suggesting something sort of similar, Chrono. I'm thinking of using it with another stone below it. He suggested a prong or semi-bezel top and bottom, with bars under the sides. I actually looked at faux tension settings when I first got it.

I'm kind of hoping that one of those opals I'm going to make into cabs has some blue and purple in it.

We'll see! I've got some other setting projects going, hope to get them tomorrow...holiday gifts!
