Mine, you are amazing! I really like the scissors cut emerald stone. I know that since I''m looking for shapes that dont show the material to its best advantage I probably wont have the best possible stone, and at another point I do want a big ol'' round, but for this particular ring I think I want something a little different.

As far as size, as long as the longest dimension is less than ~8mm it would be good. I have stupidly short stumpy fingers, so anything above 8 is literally knuckle-busting for me.

I appreciate your input MZ, since your spess helped convert me to orange :) But I do already have the setting, it was a temp home for the diamond thats going into my engagement ring that is being ordered this weekend (eep!) and my boyfriend told me I should find a new stone to put in it so that its not just sitting around empty.

AGBF, for the most part I''m with you. Orange always makes me think of hunting and guys sitting around drinking beer, and football. Plus I''m a redhead so wearing orange is not an option. But somehow orange gemstones seem exempt.

Thanks everyone for your help!

May I confess? I don''t like the color orange. It isn''t that I don''t like orange stones; I don''t like orange at all. I have used it-when putting together outfits for my daughter when she was younger-but it just doesn''t appeal to me. I couldn''t have an orange and yellow kitchen or wear an orange stone.

Now, because I want to hang out with you gals, I have to discuss orange stones. Constantly. And, as you have said, it is spreading.

I am only here because I cannot miss out on your company. I thought you should know how much you mean to me ;-).

Deb
Deb,

You know, I am not a big fan of orange either. I could never decorate with it and orange makes me look horendous when I wear it.. I look really washed out. Funny though, I was never a fan of orange at all when it came to a stone.. heck.. I had never seen a real orange stone before I discovered the Spess. But I have seen other orange shade such as the fire opal.. that just do not..''do it'' for me. I am even a little ''eh'' about orange sapphires, although I have seem a coupla yummy orange citrines. So I completely understand what you mean about not liking orange.

You mean a lot to me also and I am always thankful that you are around (even when we disagree... great sport

Here is the link to the sissor cut. It Measures 4.6X 7.5

here is a 4.5X 7.4.... but I do not like this one as much cause I think it ''loses'' much of it''s color in the middle... IMO

Here is a cool marquise. I kinda like it. It is 5.5 X 10.. but very pretty color.. IMO..

I''ve found lots of fancy shapes in citrine, orange spinel, & garnets but unfortunately, they''re all huge in size.

Whay do you say so?

Any shape can be optimized to death... Beautiful fancy cuts are not common, but that is just unfortunate

Orange could also be precious topaz and other garnets but spessartite. Anyway, the hard part will likely be to find a small stone like that with great color (saturation, I mean). Larger ones appear to have more intense color because of the depth (total, not %) the small ones have to be trully fine material to have strong color.

Topaz:

A few kinds of garnet can be orange: Hessonite (left) does a reddish orage well. Spessartite is the default option somehow and the tangerine-like orange is the most expensive and probably rare, although reddish ones are beautiful too. The trillion spessartite below looks particularly well cut (IMO) and the round (just in case you might change your mind) has incredible color for that small size!

The sapphire upwards on the thread looks golden (brownish yellow) rather than orange in that picture. Orange-peel like ones exist too - once in a blue moon. The first in line below has the color I have in mind. I am not sure how popular this idea is, but silk-like texture helps color show quite a bit and not everyone dislikes this for sapphires (left on second row below). The one next to it seems 'golden' to me but may also fit in if you don't like the reddish end of orange:

And this is something else. The stones in the picture are not perfectly eye clena, but one of the size you want could be found. There are too few of these for anyone to have found an attractive name for 'clinohumite'. The thing is wild, vivid orange. Just for fun:

Spinel can be reddish orange 'flame' color, but great bright color is pretty rare. This one below is a very lucky one!

Spinels do well lots and lots of colors, much like sapphires does, and nice pink-orange ones are possible. Here's one:

If you like the idea, the better known masters of this color are topaz (first below) and 'Pad' sapphire (below):

If anyone would ask specifically for a well cut pad sapphire in emerald shape it may take a long while.

This just happens to be sitting around. Couldn't believe it!

Hm...

I didn''t mean to lay out all things orange I can possibly think of (there should be others out there too, actually). Of all the list, the last step cut sapphire would get my vote for a warm-color small gem, even though it has a less straighforward type of ''orage'' Pad as is. The splendid (IMO) cut and unhetaed status contribute to this. And there is another (below). The ring is not real - justa drawing of what the stone might become. The sapphire, called ''cinamon color'' by the seller is offered loose:

There are a few smaller orange stones on Prescision Gem which are nicely cut...... The prices aren''t too frightening either. The one I attached is 1.45ct and reduced to 190US.

Try looking in the Garnet and Citrine Sections. There''s also one in the sapphire section.

Oh, wow!

Well, I don''t know anything about this shop... but there''s allot of orange in it! Including a stryking tourmaline:

That''s some pretty unusual color allright. ''Dravite'' is somehting brown in my book, and this is not so at all. At least in the picture.

Thanks for the hint! Have you tried this shop out?
