Hallo all :)

I'm looking for something red to replace the rubellite in my Christmas ring. I want to pump it up and change the feel of it a bit with a larger center. The current center is 7.5 x 5mm and I'm looking for something more in the 9 x 7mm range.

I can't afford rubies (who can, at that size??) and spinels are unlikely. I don't want to pay thousands of dollars, so I'm looking more at garnet or - ideally - rubellite. It's going to be bezel set, so it can't start too dark. A little pink is fine. I don't want orange. I can compromise on shape - oval is preferable, but both cushion and emerald cut could work. Asscher also.

I dont do a lot with colored gems, so I really don't know who's out there. Jeff White, Gene, Finewater Gems and and Gemfix seem to have nothing that would suit at the moment. Rubellite really is my preference.

If anyone has any suggestions, I'd be hugely grateful! And if anyone has anything they'd like to sell that hits these bases, I'm your girl!

I haven't looked up the size of Rioux Rocks rubellite, but I do recall it is on the bigger size. In my opinion, it is gorgeous!!! When I look at it, I see red. I don't see orange or pink. He has it on Instagram. It is a knock out!!! Good luck with your search! I hope this helps:)

Just wanted to add on, it is bigger. 13x10. Richard Horner cut it. If I see anything, maybe a little pink. It is maybe more than you are wanting to spend. Rioux Rocks is one word on Instagram.

Did you check Yvonne on Etsy?

I have tried to contact Rioux Rocks in the past, but he won't respond. I've asked the price of stones twice before, but they weren't exactly what I wanted. After that, he wouldn't respond. I asked some months apart - it's not like I was flooding him with questions - just twice over a period of some months. Third time, when I had found something I thought was actually perfect, he wouldn't respond. I called and left a message - no response then either. I've texted him about a stone I just saw (the rubellite is too large, but I saw a different one I'm interested in) so hopefully he'll respond to that.

ETA He added me on FB as a friend years ago when he was just starting out, and I remember posting on his page about his son and all sorts of things. I thought it was actually pretty ballsy when he first added me - I didn't know him from Adam, but he was trying to grow his business, so I let it slide. But then - bam. Silence. Very odd.

Hi @whitewave .. :wavey: .. Your upgrade project sounds like a lot of fun!

I looked at Yvonne's page, but nothing large enough, unfortunately.

Well, I’m just sitting here waiting for surgery, so in a bit I’ll participate in this challenge!

Off the top of my head, what about a MMD?

13 x 10mm would be way too large for the setting I'm trying to use it with.

All the Steve Perry ones mention 'window' - which is an automatic disqualification for me.

I like the look of the wildfishgems one, tho I *know* their prices are generally high.

I'll give it some thought. Thanks so much, peppermintpatty and Cerulean!

MMD? In deep red? it has to be red - it's a Christmas ring. And I'm not a fan of the man-mades - I really would like a rubellite, I think. The WildFishGems one is good, but it's dark, so - bezelled...meh...I'm not sure...

Oooh ooh, what about Ivy and Rose?

@mrs-b I am so sorry to hear that! I have only had him not respond once. When I first reached out to him it was by phone and face book. Now it’s almost always a dm on Instagram. I will say this,I have I think 3 gemstones of his. The cuts are excellent and I would say he has the best prices for the cuts he offers. @premiergemstones has excellent cuts too and is next in line for being reasonably priced. @gemsaltco has the best cuts and of course the higher price tag to go with it. I reach the last 2 by dm on Instagram too.

That is rude, I hate when they don’t just say what the price is. Since they don’t, I ask. I’ve asked Josh at Rioux Rocks plenty of times and I certainly haven’t bought something every time. If you feel like you want to, maybe try dming him on Instagram. I hope you get a timely reply.

I just heard back from him - so maybe he was having some sort of family crisis when I tried to buy something from him last time. We all have crap happen from time to time.

Anyway, I've sent him my PP address so he can invoice me for a gem on his insta page (I'm not sure if that's how he does things, but I'm just sort of assuming), so hopefully that will go through without a hitch.

And I should also add - I agree! His gems are top notch and his cutting is beautiful.

Are you open to custom cut?

This looks like a lovely red. It's sold but I have an aquamarine by them and it's very nicely done.

Worth an ask perhaps?

WOW! That color!!

I think what I'm going to do is go down to San Diego and see Gemfix and ask if they can custom cut something for me. I trust Andrew and he does lovely cutting. It will give me a chance to see something in person, too, which, with color, I'd definitely prefer.

In the meantime, I'm buying this from Rioux Rocks:

Apparently he's on the road at the moment, but I'm expecting an invoice when he gets home. Beautiful, right?! I LOVE this cut!

@elle_71125 - I've wanted to re-do my Gloria Floria since I sold the last one - but a little bigger, since my fingers are nowhere near as petite as yours! This gem is for that project - lovely, right? Very floral!!

@mrs-b I’m so happy to hear you heard back and in a timely manner. Yes, he just sends me a PP invoice.
So glad you found something you like. He does have talent and does make such lovely gemstones at a reasonable price point. I need to get a couple of them set!

I love the stone you chose- just beautiful! Do you have any idea’s as to how you will be setting it?

We must have been typing at the same time :)

I know *exactly* how I want it set, @peppermintpatty! I made a design I call the Gloria Floria. I did it in all diamonds, but decided it was a tad small for my hand. I sold it to @elle_71125, and she had DKJ set a bright yellow center into it. I've always wanted that design with a pale pink center - ergo - this gem. It will go into a remade version of *this* setting - feel free to tell me what you think:

@mrs-b I think I’ve seen this on DK’s Instagram page! It is gorgeous and your new pink spinel is going to look fabulous in the center!! I can’t wait to see it! I think a little feminine pop of color will please you very much! I love the idea.

I am sure you would be a very talented and in demand jewelry designer! Your eye for detail is absolutely amazing!!!

Have you found your stone now? If not, how about this? https://www.adamantgems.com/garnet/

Sorry it won't link to the actual page but this is the one I mean.

EDIT: Sorry you wanted oval didn't you? Only just noticed but this gem screams Christmas to me!

That’s the perfect choice for Gloria Floria. It’s going to look amazing with a pink center! Plus, that cut is something magical. :kiss2:

Thank you, @peppermintpatty! I love the softness of the color and the cut - the combination of the two is lush!

Thank you for that, @LD - it's tempting! I really do want something that I can set East/West - but I agree with you - the color of this is perfect. So now I'm confused....

It's the risk you take when you ask PS for help - they always come up with great things!

@mrs-b I just love the Gloria Floria! I think the pink center will be so beautiful!! Your first iteration is one of my favorite rings on PS. :kiss2:
