this is one of my favorite oval rings ever...the WF aramis. it would be stunning with a 3c!

If no sidestones are involved, second Mara's choice wholeheartedly!

And there is something else ... 'Seen These ? The ring doesn't seem to have been caught at a graceful angle and perhaps something about the stone required that the basket takes a slightly odd shape (aside the huge size, that is). Wonder what these sides are - they look somewhat like some beefy tapered baguettes rather than the 'calf head' shape I had in mind (in drawing below).

Here's what I am talking about:

and to use those pears for some dangly earrings

Wow! Look at how busy you guys have been with my ring while I was sleeping!

Marvel - The Tacori is georgous. I might try to hunt that down in person and see what it looks like on my hand.

Ana - I''m glad you posted that version of my oval with half-moons because now that I see it "for real" (almost for real anyway!) I''m thinking that might not be the way to go. Not that it''s not beautiful, but... well... I just can''t explain it. And thank you for posting those other options too. As usual you''re design skills are amazing!

Mara - I love that setting too! Do you think I could wear it along or would it need a matching band to keep it company? (Good god--a reset e-ring AND a new wedding ring... my husband might have a heart attack... )

Deco - I''ll have to try a few split shanks on. I''ve looked at them but never put one on. And I''m going to pay Scaasi a visit today at lunch. For some reason I was also under the impression that he would only set a diamond that you bought from him, but I could be wrong about that.

Widget & Kristy (and others) - Hmmmmm, interesting that you don''t mind the smaller pears. They didn''t bother me either but then two people commented that they were "small." That being said, the people who made these comments both have some HONKIN'' rings of their own (they make my 3 ct oval look like a side stone -- LOL!) so I should probably take that comment with a grain of salt since the people who made it seem to be concerned with the most finger real estate coverage.

Mrs. S - Was it you that made the trip to Pearlmans? (I *think* so, but senility has set in for me at 35 and I just can''t remember for sure... ) If so, did they have a huge inventory? (Their website has so much on it that my vision of the showroom goes on for miles!) It would be a whole day to go up there, look, and come home, but if you think it''s worth the trip I would be willing to do it.

Lady K. - What a BAD influence you are!!! Can you imagine the look on my husband''s face if I came home from the jewelers with not only a "new" ring but some extra earrings to boot!?

Your oval is dynamite Deejay and I think it just needs a more impressive and substantial setting to showcase its beauty. In my opinion a stone that large doesn''t need sidestones. I think something like that split shank ring Deco posted would be magnificent!!! Have fun with your search!

DeeJay - you have quite an enviable problem here!
31.gif

Of all the options posted, my favorites are the Aramis setting Mara posted and the 2nd Pearlman''s photo Deco posted. MAN I love both of those!!!!

I also don''t think your pears are too small at all! I think the problem is really just the angles and the shape of your setting, like you said, with the oval just kind of perched way on top, so that they don''t all flow together as a single piece. If you had a simple setting designed specifically for your oval and pears and proportioned appropriately, I think that would be goooorgeous! Maybe Mark Morrell? Mmmmmmm, all these options sound so great!!! Can''t wait to see what you choose!!!!

yep, it was me. Bill has in his store just about everything you see on his sight, plus some. I think it's soooooooo worth the trip. Heck, I drove 9 to get to him

My inlaws live about 45 min. from Battle Creak and I got to go while we were in the area for Christmas. I ended up spending almost 3 hours there

. It's really a great place to go and try on things because he has so many styles right there. He'll also let you take pictures

He has more display cases than any store i've been in and it's great because it's such a no pressure environment. I'm planning a trip to chicago in the near future and I already told hubby we were taking a day and going to visit Bill. I just couldn't be that close and not go

Breakfast at Pearlmans

Mrs. S - when are you planning your trip? Maybe we should rendesvous at Pearlmans!

By the way, I keep forgetting to mention that I have this incredible fear about getting the stone reset anyway because there is an indented natural on the girdle. I''m sure that a good setter would notice that (and I would CLEARLY point it out) and take the prong placement into account, but I''m still just about sick with worry over it... Yes, I have insurance, but I really love this stone!

mrssalvo - here''s the Pearlman''s setting that I fell in love with instantly. But not sure it''s the right thing for somone of the short-fingered ilk!

Here''s the link too in case the photo doesn''t work (I''m not too proficient at this). http://www.pearlmansjewelers.com/jewelry-designers/eli-jewelry/rings/
THIS ONE!!!!! I don''t think anyone will notice how short your fingers are with this puppy on it.

I adore this design.

Moon, you''re so funny! I really am thinking about a trip to Pearlmans so this could be the lucky winner. I even e-mailed them a while back and asked for some more photos (but of course now in this mess of e-mail folders I can''t find the pics they sent... )

I''m NOT going to Scaasi at lunch, in case anyone was interested. Here is a blub from the website:

"PLEASE NOTE: dimend SCAASI will NOT set diamonds purchased elsewhere.
Our designs can only be purchased if set with our own diamonds/gemstones."

Damn. Oh well, I''ll have to go troll a few other places on Wabash just to explore some ideas.

Would a bezel setting help protect the stone better?

Marvel, I''m sure it would, which is why the east-west setting from Pealman''s appeals to me too. I do have to say that my indented natural is very small (the appraiser even told me it was "nothing to worry about") but considering that things happen in the setting process anyway this natural just adds a level of complication.

Helping the E-W case - a pretty, evil picture. Not sure why, but of all the sweet baubles lined up there, the dainty E-W oval number beckoned.

Besides, THIS ONE was one memorable piece of work, wasn't it!

I''ve looked at that picture of Tiger''s E-W cushion a thousand times. Love it! What do you think about it (or something similar) worn alone though, since I''m not wearing it with my eternity band and my "real" wedding ring wouldn''t look right with it?

Very easy question... That ring left me speechless! funny enough, when Tiger100 posted an early poll asking how/if to combine elements from a couple of Art of Platinum designs... my indiscriminate ''Photoshop-everything'' instinct kicked in and something quite close to her actual ring came up. At the time I thought she went with Quest and a different model... sigh... Imagine the surprise when the right of my day dreaming actually appeared on the screen! Sure I love it to bits

With a large oval the setting should turn out very beautiful too. Wondering about a three-side pave shank for a substantial rock.

Although, honestly... nothing is missing there

Hi DeeJay.

That oval pic you posted was one that I got from Leon Mege, when I talked to him a while back about an oval with half moons... I saw this ring in person at the Cartier in Houston with a price tag of $100K (3 carat center stone, but I forgot the size of the side stones).

Anyway, Leon sent me two pics to show me that he''s done this type of ring before...the other one you can look at is on the Harry Winston website. Beautiful!

I''ll post the 2nd pic he sent me also, so you can take a look at another view. Like I said, I saw this ring sometime ago at Cartier and it was really, really pretty. It sparkled so much that it looked like one HUGE stone on my finger, versus 3 separate stones.

I have also tried on a 3 ct oval w/ tapered baguettes at Harry Winston, and I have to admit that from what I recall, the oval with half moons had greater "presence." The baguettes made the ring look more delicate, while the half moons gave the ring more spread across my finger. Personally, I loved it... Is there anywhere you can go to try on a couple of these different styles?

Hey DeeJay --

If there is a partcular setting that you like on the Dimend Scaasi web site, call or email Iaasac and ask them if they will set your diamond. I was at one time interested in his tiffany replica solitaire and I saw on the site that they only set their stones. I emailed him and asked if he would make an exception and he got back to me right away, and said that there are certain settings in which they will only set their own diamonds, but there are many on his site in which they will set a diamond that someone already owns. It''s definitely worth a call if you see one you love.

FWIW, I really like the Aramis one Mara posted. I have a 3 stone ring myself that I am considering changing b/c I don''t think there is enough emphasis on the center stone.

And MrsSalvo....when are you coming to Chicago?????? Me, you and DeeJay HAVE to get together!!!

MMMMMM. This shot is my fave of Tiger''s ring. You can see why sidestones are hardly necessary (and might even detract in this case). She said her Leon setting was suprisingly reasonable too! Less than the estimate even. HMMMMMMMMM????

DJ...one of the prettiest ovals I have seen was set east - west / half bezel in brushed platinum. It is definitely a more modern look but I remember thinking how pretty and substantial it looked.

Oh goodness ... I just want to chant "East West Split Shank" "East West Split Shank".

I also want to rescue Tiger007 from a freak jewelery accident ... for which she is so grateful she INSISTS I accept a certain E/W cushion ring. I then keep a piece of denim cloth glued to my hand for all eternity, mimicing the above picture. Also - hand surgery to look like Tiger's hands. Ummm -- think I need some more coffee this afternoon - or maybe a walk outside.

I think it is jewelry heaven!!!! OMG how stunning...

DeeJay -

Just my two cents here...I think halos look great on shorter fingers. I'm 5'4" and not the skinniest thing in the world...my ring size is a 6 and I think my halo compliments my sausage fingers quite nicely!

Honestly...I've tried other ring styles on...and I think the halo is very nice...especially with the thinner band.

For whatever that is worth.

My mom has a 2.something carat oval and she has it set with channel rounds...which I think is also very pretty. I've attached a pic... (and those are my sausage fingers in the pic...)

So based on the hopeful news from Pebbles (((there are certain settings in which they will only set their own diamonds, but there are many on his site in which they will set a diamond that someone already owns))) I went to vist Dimend Scaasi at lunch.

Let me first say that Isaac is so gracious and charming. He stopped whatever (more important, I''m sure!) thing he was doing and spent a considerable amount of time with me, even though I dropped in completely unannounced. He said that he would indeed be willing to set my stone (thank you god!) and patiently let me play with all of the beautiful settings in his showroom.

Remember how I said that I didn''t want a halo... well, of course the setting that I was drawn to over and over was very similar to this one (the one I saw had graduated stones going up the side toward the head--at least that''s what I recall, but I might be remembering it incorrectly).

It would look different with my oval, but I don''t think the halo is overwhelming. And the workmanship on this thing--amazing! Isaac also said that they could design a setting that would incorporate my side pears, but I like this one so much I''m not sure I would want to deviate from the original design.

So... Opinions? Suggestions?

This is the very first place that I''ve gone to to look at any settings so I want to be calm and rational about it, but DAMN I liked it!

DJ, his marquise E-W setting i made for Mara''s friend and may be recycled for an oval (big one!)

RCMarqforMara1.jpg

PS - It''s funny you say that about Jazmin''s ring because that''s the first thing I thought of when I saw the setting on Pearlman''s site. And Jaz''s ring is definitely substantial enough to wear on its own!

DJ, that''s great you got to go in scassi. I would suggest taking your time and trying on a bunch of stuff, espcially if that''s the first place you''ve visited. I''d go back when you have more time to really look around. I''m bias because I have had such positive experiences with Pearlmans but I think you''d really enjoy a visit to his place as well.
