Nervous about 'inspired by' vs copying

I originally wanted to use a stone like these, but then thought the underneath diamond would get hidden because the sapphires obviously aren't white Screenshot_20240113_075624_Etsy.jpgScreenshot_20240113_075707_Etsy.jpgScreenshot_20240113_075729_Etsy.jpg

Edit. @yssie @MWM do you think these portrait sapphires could work, or should I stick w diamond if I want the bright diamond to stand out and be visible?

Hi lovedogs! Great idea, i love this!

I’m always fascinated by these types of rings, with a panel of clear crystal over something/or carved. These are just examples of crystal types I’ve seen used for this kind of design. I suspect some are natural and some are synthetic stones Going natural I think a clear natural sapphire would work great and be durable (I think the ones above are cool but too distracting to put anything visible under them), or do a more fragile Herkimer diamond (quartz). Or you could do a natural diamond of course…

This one from Sirciamjewelery is done in clear Topaz - based in LA this is a new style for them.

This one from SwankMetalsmithing is clear synthetic sapphire - this artist does a lot of sapphire over something else rings, I love her work.

This one from Wlgmetalcouture is quartz - this artist does very high end baroque/gothic style jewelry

This one from Wlgmetalcouture is rose quartz -

This one from Ryan_Intaglio is Topaz

I‘m sorry for the spammy post. I didn’t realize the links would show up as photos.

I emailed swank metalsmith after seeing one of their rings. Haven't heard back yet! Thanks for the other links, very helpful!

Came to say I've seen Raintree with quite a few of that stone-over-stone style, I don't think it's any one person/companies "thing".
PS You have awesome taste and I cannot wait to see the coolness you create!

Hi, last time I checked Swankmetalsmithing did not do custom. I wonder if CVB ID would do an experimental ring. I think she works with gem cutters to do custom cuts but also might be flexible/creative in the available gem types. I would pick her to do a turnkey well executed design too (this is only based on what I’ve seen from others, not my own experience with her).

This designer does custom, last I checked, but it is much simpler than a CVB design: Elizabeth Scott Jewelry on Etsy does bezels and overall designs that are very well executed, but mainly streamlined and sleek. “esdesigns” is her store.

I’m not supposed to be posting the synthetics that she uses for her Potrait Cut bezel ring, so just go to Etsy and search for Portrait Cut, you can find a lot of options from her and others. She has a site under the name I gave above with really nice jewelry. TIP: look at the photos in her reviews for more of what she is able to do, her designs are simple/sleek but really impressive.

Thanks, she's great!

How exciting! I cant wait to see what you come up with.

I feel like i am different than most... I designed my 2 tone wedding band, it's very unique, and it was all 'my' idea. TOok me weeks to get it right. I have told people who have asked "feel free to copy it".... i feel as though honestly, if you look hard enough someone somewhere definitely has the same thing as someone else, without even knowing. I've been looking for an OEC and i found a twin of a popular poster's ring, does that mean i cant buy it because someone else had it first? Of course not!

I guess I feel like if it's a concept like "diamond under diamond" or hidden halo or claw prongs then no one person can really claim it, if it's something branded like VCA OR someone does a super custom ring with tons of meaningful special touches then i would say it's copying, but like I said a CONCEPT like claw prongs or diamond under diamond or a basket that looks like petals.... i dont think one person can claim it... But thats just my opinion, I dont mind if someone copies my designs, it makes me happy.
