I have been ring/diamond hunting for a few months now and have read these forums extensively. I'm planning on a ~1.25 ct Oval solitaire engagement ring in 18k yellow gold for my fiance-to-be. There is a great local jeweler who is going to walk me through a custom four prong setting with some subtle hand engraved detail work. I think I found a good stone but wanted to bounce it off you guys before pulling the trigger. My budget for the stone was $5k

or should I go with this one from Blue Nile.

Many thanks in advance

Neither.

You buy ovals based on light return and faceting you need pictures and an ASET. Which JA will provide but Blue Nile will not. But that JA oval has a strong bowtie and is not bright. And is not a good choice.

Also you don't buy ovals by weight you buy them buy spread. a one carat oval can look bigger than a 1.2 carat oval or the same size. Depending on the depth of the stones and other factors. that doesn't mean you should shoot for shallow stones. That's a bad idea. You want a stone that performs well.

This one has potential. http://goodoldgold.com/diamond/10097/ This vendor, Good Old Gold, can find you a gorgeous stone, they would search for you and find you the best one for your budget. They have a great eye for fancies.

You would tell them: J or better color. Eyeclean clarity. Largest and best performing stone for under 5k. Minimal or no bowtie. And a preferred length to width ratio over 1.3.

Then they'd find you the stones and upload them for you, make a video and then we can help you chose.

That's the best method. If you want to do this right, then that's what I recommend.

James Allen has no diamonds right now within those parameters worth buying.

Thank you so much for your advice and information. Such a lifesaver. I reached out to GOG and will report back what they find.

Interested in a moval??? They call it an oval but it looks more like a marquise/oval to me  !

Your budget is a little tight for that size...I'll keep looking though.

That's gorgeous. JOsborn84, please put on hold and ask for an ASET image. YOu can still work with GOG, but this is lovely.

It's an oval though. Not a marquise. And it's a stone that is facing up BIG for it's weight. It easily faces up like most 1.2 ovals.

After much ado, I was able to make a little headway with the good folks at Good Old Gold. Here are the three (current) finalists:

www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/12161/
www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/12162/

And the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGN4s91FALw

Any thoughts? The 1ct G VS1 looks stunning in comparison but I'm concerned about its lack of fire. Thanks again guys. This really has been an education and learning experience.

Can you stretch the budget a little to 5500? Cause I don't like any of those much. And this one is FREAKING AMAZING: http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/11794/

And it is 5500. Maybe we can help you with your settings options to save money there to get this stone?? It's a REALLY fantastic oval. Plus the spread is amazing. It's just a big gorgeous white oval.

Good Old Gold can order this for you in yellow gold: http://www.stuller.com/products/122100/9138501/?groupId=119111 It would be less than $500 and they can send it to an engraver and have it hand engraved for you. And they can make sure that the prongs are beautiful and delicate claws when they set the stone. It would bring you setting to around 750. Which might open your budget up for the stone.

They can order you this one with approximately 15-20 percent off the price listed on this site: http://www.gabrielny.com/engaged/style/ER8805W44JJ
