New Octavia - opinions on Fluorescence & ring design

Actually there are a zillion things that can result in diamond pics looking different.

The only way to fairy compare the appearance of two diamonds is to place them both side by side under a camera and take one single pic of the pair of them.

Even then, one might be closer to the UV light source than the other - rendering the comparison inaccurate.

Sooooo true!!!

In the comparison videos I did my best to reproduce the same light conditions and filmed in the exact same location but still... so many variables!!!

Lol thanks for posting these comparison videos @Dr_Diesel

Congratulations!!! The Octavia is gorgeous! Wonderful design by Karl! Plus, I think all of us who own stones cut by Yoram are extremely fortunate! I can't wait to see Caysie's setting! I am uncertain which design you ended up choosing. I really like Ace Bruin's if his is the one with the hand shot (post 27 bottom pic). I would not enclose the stone with metal on all sides. The simpler the better with such an intricately cut stone, in my opinion.

Does this image make more sense?IMG_9864.JPG

Hi there—Slightly differnt direction, and might not be to your taste, but I thought it was a further variation on what you’re doing with the band and how it speaks to the diamond design. Anyway, I saw this on IG and thought of this thread. Can’t wait to see how you bring it all together!1FB52322-2912-418F-A262-398A4F8F5996.jpeg

Hi @Dr_Diesel - My two cents... The top view of the Octavia is amazing, but the pavilion view is also incredible!! Just make sure that you REALLY want to cover up all that area with the setting. My stone was in an open solitaire setting, and even then the pavilion was partially blocked. Now, it is in a tension setting and the entire pavilion is visible. It has made such a difference that I was surprised! I know that @kenny and @Dancing Fire both have/had their Octavias in tension settings too, and @globaltravel has hers in a setting that she can see the pavilion.

You may want to enclose the stone, and if that is what you want, then that is definitely what you should do! But, my humble opinion is that you will miss some amazing light optics that way. Good luck as you decide! I'm excited to see the final setting!

Stunning stone! some great desgin choices...

Cannot wait to see what you end up with...

Excellent point!! So much to consider

A tension setting was my first impulse as well.

This design popped into my mind in kind of an instinctive flash, so I’m inclined to follow that instinct.

I’ve also decided to kite-set the diamond. Since there is less surface area, I think the metal basket would be more secure.

In the meantime, I got a cheap 8mm band from Amazon and drilled a hole to set the diamond in - just to see what it might look like:

Now that you mention the pavilion however, I have an idea…

Will get back to you with more renderings if I can figure this out.

Here are the latest sketches. Might give you a clearer idea than the last ones posted.

Looks awesome- the kite set is very cool! The design will be great- I just wanted to pop in to say that there is a spectacular light show all around the stone and not just on the top, even after it's set ;)2- DEFINITELY follow your instincts! You want to be happy with the final product and we are all excited too see it!

Edited to add a missing word-

Thank you again! I’ll see if I can modify the profile in photoshop. Will keep you posted.

Just finished this one:

The one issue that I have with a tension setting, for my purposes, is that I am going after sort of an industrial look. A “Diesel Edition” Octavia ring (as it were) :lol-2:

I’ve just been finding it hard to pull off with a tension setting.

For a kind of style reference, this is the motorcycle I built/modified:

Maybe that helps make more sense of the look or “vibe” I’m going for?

This vibe will make a great ring design! I know that Bruce Boone makes some pretty cool rings (he made mine and Kenny's and Dancing Fire's)- there may be something your style in his regular section that could be modified to hold a stone? But you need to go with the designer that "speaks" to you and it sounds like you have a great rapport with Caysie! I'm sure you can both get the vibe exactly how fits you best! Such a fun adventure! Keep us posted!

I think this is a good looking setting, but it is kind of sad to cover the profile view of the incredible diamond. I am sorry to say this, and I realize we all have different taste, but I think that other setting design that looks like an army tank or something does nothing to compliment this diamond. I think a regular tension setting like acebruin's or Dancing Fire's is much better for this diamond.

Not sure it will actually look like an Army tank IRL...it may just be my renderings. It's actually based on this Gelin Abaci design:Gelin Abaci 1.png

Thank you for you input though. I will certainly keep it under advisement. Will play with some other designs and explore a bit ;)2

BTW, I LOOOOVE your asymmetrical setting! So elegant! And the open sides...I see what you mean!

Gorgeous! I've ogled that ring many, many times over the years.

It looks TALL, no?

Too bad Gelin Abaci is no longer around. I loved their designs!

I agree that particular setting has the stone set a little high. I like the open profile, though. I adore Caysie and she has made several rings for me. I am just not sure if a regular setting can imitate a tension setting in appearance??? I wonder if there are any competent tension setting makers around today? That seems to be such a good option for your stone if a traditional setting has to cover up part of the profile.

I will say that I like the last profile you posted more than having the entire stone pavilion enclosed, though. I think having the stone set square rather than kite set will work out better, too. I really love your diamond. I just hope you can figure out a setting that does it justice!

You & me both! Thank you for all the thoughtful feedback!

Not really because if you set it too low the culet will touch your skin.

Just a few more sketches in brushed platinum. Left is the mock up overlaying the dummy ring shown on the right.

We’ll, this is pretty much final.

The profile is set.

Just boils down to these two. I think I know my preference. Anyone care to share theirs?

I prefer the metal under the stone. It just has a more cohesive intentional look. I like the industrial look you're going for.

*Just asked my husband which one he liked...he went with the one with the metal underneath too.

YMMV...

Here it is in a satin platinum finish.

@diamondseeker2006

Thoughts on the updated look?

I do like the satin platinum better! I am not understanding how the stone is held in, though. Is the diamond inserted into the metal at it's east-west parts? Would you consider trying the stone in the normal position to see what it looks like?

I think the band would look better if it were the width of the stone. See Ace Bruin's as an example of what I mean. I can see his ring with your indentions looking really nice. I just don't see the kite set position being all that complimentary to the ring design.

I think you were getting close with this design but I do like the satin platinum better. I just don't understand how the stone is attached in this one.1624328560340.png

Let me add that I don't really dislike the black rhodium for a man's ring. But I think it will make scratches show MUCH more than satin platinum finish. Every scratch is going to show shiny platinum. Then when it needs to be polished, you'll lose more of the black rhodium.

True! I was thinking the same

Here you go. I’m pretty set on an 8mm band. Anything smaller looks strange on my fingers. Yes, the stone is set in the east-west directions. Sort of a “faux” tension setting with a basket.

The kite-set was not my first choice…until I “set” it in a dummy setting on my finger. Everyone who sees it in person likes it - and are often surprised by that.
