How big is your intended? Is she a good size girl (bigger than a size 9)? Or a tiny thing (size 4 and under)? How big are her fingers? My DIL is a smidge (I think a size 0) and a half carat stone looks nice and big on her size 4 finger.

If I had to guess, I'd say she's a size 6 or so. She has thick fingers for her body size and I believe wears a size 7 ring. Her personality and style are such that she wouldn't want too big of a stone. I intent to have it mounted on a simple setting without a halo or other smaller stones. Both the stones I'm considering are 7.5 mm which seem about right.

7.5 mm is a more than respectable size for a size 7 finger. Some ladies like really big rocks and others are more comfortable with something smaller. Do you know what she might like? A solitaire will be quick and easy to procure, which works in your favour, with regards to the time constraint. Have you made a choice yet?

I chose the darker stone, and had it set in a platinum solitaire setting. Here are a few pics. I hope she likes it!

Now I'd like to have it insured before I take it overseas. How shall I do that?

I'd use a courier service.

That has got to be a record - you came looking for assistance on December 4th and today, ten days later, you have the ring in hand?! Unbelievable! Congratulations - that is one blue sapphire!

I would start by contacting your insurance company. If you're in a hurry, perhaps they would accept what you spent and allow you to insure for that value. Then, when you have more time, you can have it appraised for replacement value by an appraiser knowledgeable in colored stones. If you come back to the board and let people know where you're located, people may be able to give you recommendations for good appraisers.

Have a great trip!
