Nice but Cheap Concave Cuts?

I love Richard Horner''s work, but he is a little bit out of my price range. Anyone know of less expensive concave cuts? What about created or synthetic stones? I am concerned that a cheap/created/synthetic version might look a bit too novel, a bit tacky.

Any insight?

I took a look at one of the listings -- Chris and Ann's concave faceting at www.concavefaceting.com and here's a sample of one of their stones. Don't know anything about them or any of the others listed but perhaps contacting some of the faceters guilds will give you some more leads.

What is your price range?

I know richard has quite a few stones sub-$1000. There typically not sapphire or ruby, but amethyst, peridot, citrine, all beautiful in their own right.

I recently bought a 13+ carat concave amethyst from Wink for less than $1000. In fact, he has quite a few beautiful stones sub $600. That's not a bad price considering they are one-of-a-kind pieces.

How about natural stones in cuts similar to the citrine in this image? At prsent they''re being produced in amethyst, ametrine, citrine, swiss and London blue topaz and peridot, mostly as calibrated trillions, cushions, rounds and rectangles.

there were some on eBay today but i''m not advocating buying stones, even inexpensive, unless you''re willing to eat the price if you don''t like it. some do seem inexpensive enough to try out though.

Forgot to resize the blue topaz image and I hadn''t noticed the chips on the pavilion. It''s a reject.

The stone you asked about is Brazilian citrine and it comes in 10 mm. and 12 mm. I don''t have the carat weight at the moment.

Here''s a 10 x 8 mm. oval in the same material.

that purple amethyst is growing on me....i''ve got to quit looking! will the orange sapphire be recut or remain as is?

It will remain as is. It has been graded by the AGTA lab. I like it so much. I have never seen such a sapphire without Be heated.

No, the stones I posted are commercially cut and they''re nice, also inexpensive, just the way Velourial wanted. All are natural mined material.

Type "concave faceting" into Google and you will likely end up with a pagefull of links !

Among them Concavefacets.com turns up nice and, more importantly not all that huge concave cut pieces including fancy shapes and synthetics. The one problem I find with concave cuts is that smaller stones (ring size) do not look nearly as great as the huge, fancy shaped and intricately carved pieces. Richard turns those tiny sidestones around just nicely, of course.

Acstones has a page for concave cuts and mentions their sources. A "pair" of fancy triangles there (a peridot and a morganite) look particularly prone to become pins or pendants...
