its called " spinel on sapphire ". someone last time said the sapphire collided with the spinel, and that was my assumption too. i looked this up. the spinel spawned OFF the sapphire. i will see if i can find the pick of it being upside down under a fridge magnet.

The gemstone in your photos is so tiny, it's hard to see. Can you get clearer, larger photos?
This is the spinel-sapphire you posted about a few months ago? The only way to be 500% certain of what you have is to send it to one of the major labs here in the US. Otherwise, you're just going to the same comments as last time.

NOT ONE person last time said ALL spinels are magnetic. i want everyone who posted last time to understand their opinion means nothing to me. and no. gia doesnt make the call. the largest red diamond was stuck in an envelope and sent to the smithonion in DC not graded by anyone. so, you are incorrect. if you posted last time, stop. i dont wanna here nothing from you. ALL spinels are magnetic. NOT ONE poster last time mentioned that. very soon, my new chelsea filter will read red on the pink part, and read nothing on the violet part. just wanted to show you all that youre not really an expert where you know absolutely nothing about.

Are you able to get a little further away from it? =)2

And: what is happening here? And how does it relate to the presence or absence of ghouls?

whats happening here is my vendor found a few sapphires that had some spinel on them and decided to cut them anyway. that one pic showing it stuck to a 90degree fridg magnet explains it all. now im about to add a chelsea filter to prove some parts of the sapphire stone are not sapphire. i think the magnet also enhances the colors of both stones. my other two i can get to stick to the same magnet at a 45degree slope, but those two always slide off. i hope i did not change the chemical structure of the first one. i sure improved its looks.

I don't think a magnetic field will change the chemical structure of anything. I think a magnetic field can influence the crystal structure as the crystal is forming, but I'm not a chemist.

If a fridge magnet is improving the appearance of your gem, best to keep this a secret and patent it.

after i do the chelsea, i will take a pic of all three naturally but on the magnet, filter my next pic, flip all 3 over and take that too, then chelsea the pavilions. the red diamond that was sent in the mail was purchased as a garnet.

Magnets.
how do they work?

i bought stronger ones, and all i could get from that was able to partially rotate my first stone. so its an area influencer i believe. im not using glue to hold these on. i think its also because theyre light. my heavier spinels slide right off after 25 or so degree tilt.

Um...I have a 24 inch computer monitor and, um...don't mean to be a ghoul but ghouls have to eat too. Sorry, maybe something that got caught in between a ghoul's teeth, or, to many years of using sand paper as tooth paste. Only your dentist knows.

Any material (natural or otherwise) that contains a metal, such as iron in the case of spinel, is going to have some level of magnetism. For instance, flux-grown spinel also contains iron and is therefore magnetic. So I'm just not sure what that definitively concludes? Personally, if it was that important to me, I would just avoid all the guesswork and simply send it out to a reputable lab for confirmation.

Do you know Kirk Feral's site Gemstone Magnetism? He has measured the magnetic susceptibility of a wide range of gemstones. Quick summary, magnetic susceptibility of gem corundum is low to moderate, that of gem spinels is moderate to strong. But there is a big overlap. See this table. I've extracted the relevant parts:
MagneticSI.jpg
(The last column is the susceptibility index, 10^6 times the basic quantity in SI units.) So it doesn't seem that a magnetic test would be conclusive.

Also, I'm a bit surprised that any normal gem corundum or spinel would stick to a fridge magnet. (The magnets recommended for gem testing are strong neodymium magnets, which are much stronger than fridge magnets. If a fridge magnet were that strong, you wouldn't be able to pull it off.) To be sure, I don't have a loose corundum or spinel to check.

Note that this site is primarily a jewellery forum. Most of us are not gemmologists. We mostly leave IDing to the professionals. You may do better on a gemmology forum. We are not allowed to link to other forums, but there's a well-known one about gemology that's online. Many of the members are qualified gemmologists. They welcome newbies' questions. Just be warned that they give short shrift to newbies with attitude.

im gonna take my #1 off the magnet and stow it away. then im gonna lay down the other two on their crowns for about a day. and for that one pic of my #1 upside down at a 90degree? yeah. wow.

This was fascinating (!) -- and I did not make my way through it yet. But I always assumed that the color-giving metals were like boron in diamond and < 1PPM. These magnetic-detection thresholds that he reports -- and, admittedly, this is using his very sensitive method of a super-strong magnet and a near-frictionless surface (flotation) -- are in percent so that's a lot of metal!

It's hot and I'm feisty. You can buy all the tools you want, but unless you know how to use them and interpret the results, you are wasting your time and money, but go right ahead! You also are annoying us - don't come here to ask a question and then be a know-it-all. If you don't want the true experts in the world of gemstones (GIA and AGL) to test your stones, then this whole thread is meaningless. It's just you attacking us and insisting you are the expert. It's also kinda rude.
