My DD is turning 10 years old and she''s recently become interested in jewelry. She''s asked for a necklace for her birthday and she''d like it to be on her birthstone (Citrine I believe) and to make it that much harder

in the shape of a heart!

I''ve never purchased a colored stone before and I don''t want to spend a lot of money on the necklace out of fear she''ll lose it. It needs to be smallish and while she said heart shaped, I don''t think that''s as important to her as actually just receiving the necklace

I''d appreciate any and all help!

Thanks so much :)

Citrine is easy to find, and fairly inexpensive, especially in commercial quality. I would think your best bet would be to look in the department stores for a finished piece, or even in Walmart. You will not be getting top gem quality, but for a 10 year old, and the fear of loosing should be fine.

I started buying select pieces of jewelry for my daughters when they turned one. They each get a piece for significant life events. For my older daughter, she got a handmade gold butterfly pin for her first year, an absolutely stunning antique bohemian garnet necklace to die for for (I truly mean, I''ve never seen a more beautiful) for entering kindergarten, for graduating from sixth grade this year she''s getting a Tiiffany initial necklace. My younger daughter got beautiful peridot earrings for turning one and the matching penant for entering kindergarted. I''ll probably give her the initial necklace next year when she graduates sixth grade.

I gave older daughter garnet earrings when she turned 10. She was quite responsible about them, except that she wore them in the pool and one of the prongs wore off or broke. The garnet actually fell out at school, she found it and brought it and the settng home. I''ve promised her some larger, replacement earrings.

The 1 yo and kindergarten pieces are sitting in a safe deposit box, they haven''t seen them and I''ll probably start pulling them out on surprise occassions when the girls get a bit older. However, I think I''m going to give them their initial necklaces.

I would buy the citrine necklace, and let her have and wear it. My kids have real pieces they inherited, and I let them keep them, but I enforce the message that they are only to be worn for special occasions. So far they''ve both been very responsible about their jewelry.

Ohhh Feb... It is WONDERFUL to get little girls involved in the passion of jewelry. My oldest has been working on a new project each year.. she loves it.

I think it is wonderful that your daughter wants one. There are a few vendors that frequent here that I am sure that you could contact and they could help.

I started getting my daughter real jewelry at a young age. Sadly most of hers got wipped out by some friends while she was out of the room.

She is now grown and I still buy her pieces and she gets some of mine along the way that I no longer wear. I think it is a great idea starting her on REAL jewelry pieces.Just beware! !

Check out this citrine (November) pendant and it is in a heart shape.

I think this is the one Conitta mentioned from QVC - it was the only one I could find. You can search it by the item number, which is the name of the picture file I''m attaching. J61932. However, I like the one from Amazon better.

there''s also at QVC: J71409

perhaps a little rich looking for a 10 year old but 7 carats of heart shaped citrinie should give her the color gem stone fever for life!

I love that pendant from Amazon! If the citrine is anything like the color shown, it would be soooo pretty for a 10 yo!

If you are looking for a very inexpensive pendant you could always go with a sterling silver snap in setting with a sterling silver chain. A citrine heart shape, say 5-6mm shouldn''t be too hard to come by or too expensive.

That pendant from Amazon is adorable! That would give her 2 hearts in one pendant.
