Now I really did it :((

As long as the anxiety is manageable, then you are probably fine. I just know that worry keeps you rather knotted up and probably exacerbates any physical pain you might have. It's so hard to go from a full, active life to one sitting in a chair all day so that's all perfectly understandable.

Glad you will have a visitor today - it's always nice to chat one on one with a friend. I just wouldn't miss any pain meds at this point - keeping them onboard and not letting the pain get the better of you is probably the best route. I think we would all hate to have to take them but it's what they're for and it certainly won't be forever. I hope a day of rest as opposed to your day yesterday will see the pain abating. Plus, today is Friday so DH should be around for the weekend I hope! That must make the time easier to bear with companionship! Would it be too unbearable to get in the car this weekend and take a ride? Maybe get an ice cream or something just to break up the monotony?

Missy, honey, being short on sleep makes everything look gloomy & every obstacle like the Alps. I know -- I rarely sleep a full night. Got up this morning at 3:00. We are exhausted emotionally & mentally, and a lot of things seem hopeless that really are not. Just keep in your bonnet the knowledge that you are not your most top self at this moment -- but that you will be again soon; so no need to wrestle with months in the future right now -- you can't fix them till you get to them anyway, so drop them off your shoulders & give yourself a break.

Rather than hanging out in such pain, why not call the dr's office & ask if it's right? They might tell you how to adjust the boot for more comfort or heaven knows, give you some way to lessen it. That just doesn't sound like how it should be -- at least let them know the situation.

Others are totally right -- drs usually give the conservative prognosis. A lot of patients don't work hard at PT or whatever is prescribed. If a dr predicts complete recovery that doesn't happen, the patient decides he or she is a bad doctor -- they like to avoid that, lol. I know you'll toil away at your PT because that's who you are -- & therefore, your outcome will far far exceed what he said. I'm sure you'll walk like a ballerina! The only negative that you may tire out sooner than you used to, but don't we all?

This is why I wrote you about my grandmother. Her drs. gave her the worst possible news: life in a wheelchair. Well, maybe for some 77-year-olds, but not that one! Their lack of faith in her capability only made her more determined to prove them wrong -- and to give herself her life back. You will be in that same place -- it's very early days yet, so please don't fret that you feel weak; you are not, you're simply injured & still in some shock. Decide for the moment to leave the future to the future because you cannot touch it till you reach it.

Natural to feel grief at the dr's untactful statement that your leg isn't the same. You feel the loss of something essential. It has betrayed you, in a way. Women feel the same when they lose a breast to mastectomy, not because of cosmetics but because they've lost a part of themselves. It's a perfectly normal emotion & will pass -- especially in a while when you begin using your leg again & find it works.

Much love to you. The best best advice I can give -- based on my own experiences -- is DON'T THINK TOO MUCH! :D Make a gratitude list: you're alive! You broke only a leg, not your neck. You'll get moving again before long -- geeze, it's only been 2 weeks! You have super medical & PT care. Your DH is an ANGEL & you know it. Your friends love you -- so do we!

I feel better as I have just had a shower and washed my hair. Bless my dh. Without him I have no clue what I would do. It is because of him I get to shower and wash my hair every day and it makes a difference for me. I am also wearing my favorite color (blue of course though technically turquoise) and I am ready to face the day. Looking forward to my friend's visit though she can only come for a short time as she has to pick her son up later this morning and she lives about an hour and a half away from me. But any visit is good.

I agree. I won't be missing my pain meds today. No need to suffer as it's not like that will make me heal faster. I'll take them while I need to and I am over not wanting to take them no worries about that. The car ride wasn't bad. I'm used to sitting like that now in the back seat. I was propping my leg in my dh's briefcase and well I am used to NYC cabdrivers by now LOL.

I just called and left a message for one of the clinic heads. The chief administrator is off for the next week (got that from his answering machine message when I tried to call him this morning). I will feel better when I speak with the second in command there and see what she has to say if anything without his input. At least I have set the ball in motion.

My dh is home all weekend and though he may have some work to do he will be here. I am even hoping (if I am up for it) to take a short walk (well wheel is more like it) outside as the surgeon said I could get out for short periods of time now.

Thanks again MGR. Your calming words make a difference and I want you to know I appreciate that!

Thank you sweet Laurie. I am sorry you are also having trouble sleeping and I hope you get a much needed and restful night's sleep very very soon. Even when I was 100% I had some difficulty sleeping and yes it makes us cranky and more prone to worry doesn't it. But I long for that type sleep I used to get. Seems like a walk in the park compared to my sleeping now lol. I guess it's all a matter of perspective and I am sending you restful sleep wishes and sweet dreams for a good night's sleep!!!

Your grandmother's story is an inspiration to me and I appreciate you sharing it with me. I haven't forgotten and each story like that helps quiet the fear and worry I have. Thank you.

You got it. It's like I am mourning the loss of something essential to me and it feels like a betrayal of sorts. Though rationally I know stuff just happens and one must move forward. I will be fine and you are right. I have to stop THINKING so darn much. Always a problem of mine to be sure. Must shutee (as Doug Heffernan would say) the brain lol.

Sending much love to you too Laurie. And lots of hugs for your wise and loving words.

Missy, the physiatrist directs/prescribes the work of the physical therapist. No PT should happen b before either your surgeon or the physiatrist generate the physical therapy plan itself. Physical therapists carry out those orders. No PT should touch you without those orders.

Voltaren gel is great for ankle pain, call and ask.

Get some Ativan or Xanax. It saved me.

Hi Missy, Please call the doctor regarding the pain you are in. It sounds logical that it would be a result of all the activity yesterday. I think it will ease your concerns hearing his explanation. Also maybe he will be able to subscribe something to manage your pain better.
I would also let him know you don't feel the boot is giving your leg enough support. It could be that it simply is too large for you.

If you begin feeling that the anxiety is getting hard to control, please let the doctor know. It's such a slippery slope when you feel overwhelmed and depressed. The medicine will help you cope better. With everything you are going thru it's complete understandable you are feeling the way you are. I realize I haven't said anything that hasn't been said in the above posts. We are all really concerned about you and want you to feel comfortable and the best you can possibly feel while you are dealing with this. Hugs, Hugs, Hugs!!!

My surgeon told me that I just had to be careful since any spills could result in a break. Because the ligaments are longer, they will roll and pull bones out of place if it's a bad roll. I'm recovered fully, just every now and then, it aches when it's cold or about to rain (then again so do my hips and I certainly have not broken that!).

In the hospital, we just typically use a bunch of pillows to rotate patients in a comfortable position, but it seems the pregnancy pillow might be the way to go for you as It should stay in place better and it was meant to support legs and pregnancy bellies and alleviate lower back pain. If Oxy is not working for your pain, you might want to ask for a pain specialist to take a look at other therapies or medications that could work better for you. Everyone is so different in their pain tolerances and what works well for their pain.

I really do hope you find some relief and I'm so sorry this has happened to you. You are a very sweet woman.

Question. Last year I blew my knee & when I went to the dr. he said there was unusual flexibility in my knees: when they held my knee & thigh motionless, the lower half of my leg was easy to push side to side -- there was a lot of play, in both legs. According to the dr., it should've been tighter. Nobody mentioned why, though they sounded a little disapproving. Is this what you're talking about -- long ligaments? I figured it was from years of daily yoga. Is it something to keep an eye on? Not painful or any problem for me, but now you've made me wonder. Thanks!

Thanks for that explanation azstonie. The visiting nurse came while my friend was here and was very nice and I am waiting for the PT to call me and schedule home PT visits. So far my insurance approved only 2 visits but we'll see if they approve more after the Physical Therapist makes their first home visit. They have my doctor's instructions already as his office contacted them yesterday so that's all in order.

I have a call in to my doctor and will ask him about the Voltaren gel. He is in surgery all day today so not sure he will be able to call me back and the PA is off on Fridays. I didn't know that when I called this AM and asked to speak to the PA about my pain. At least I tried though and I think it is getting somewhat better now anyway thankfully.

Hey there Callie. I actually did call my doctor's office this morning before my friend visited but was told the PA is off Fridays (lucky PA!) and my doctor is in surgery all day today. However I am in less pain (woohoo!!!) right now so feeling so much better and in a happier frame of mind. My girlfriend just visited me today for a few hours and that was so nice. She said she thinks I am doing so well and have a great attitude. HA, she should have seen me in the throes of pain last night and first thing this AM but I had a great visit with her and she actually stayed later than she was supposed to so now her son is waiting for her to pick him up as she is late for him. But he's 16 so he'll be fine.

Thanks for caring and big hugs back to you!!!

Awww thank you ROL that is very sweet of you to say. And thank you for that info. Very interesting. I am so glad you are fully recovered despite the awareness of weather/barometric changes. I am going to order a pregnancy pillow and see how that goes. I also cannot wait to get those huge stitches out as I think they are causing some of my discomfort if I move my leg to that side.

I also have hydrocodone from the first doctor so I can try that again if need be. Just not sure if that's OK to mix with the oxy though I think it should be fine if I am not taking them together which of course I would not.

Laurie, I am curious to see what Resonance of Life says about this. When your doctors sounded disapproving I wonder what they were thinking and why they would not explain. I don't get that but I see it all the time. I guess the less they tell us the less time they spend answering our questions. ::)
I also wonder if there is anything you can do to make your loose connections (?)/extreme flexibility less so or tighter. In any case I am glad it is not bothering you in any way!

Hi Missy. I am delighted to hear you are in less pain tonight. Woo hoo is right! :appl:

Are you feeling more comfortable with your new boot after having it on for a day? I remember whenever I went in after my knees surgery I always left sorer than when I came in because the doctor poked, moved, jiggled and touched everything and of course that was nothing compared to your fractures. I agree with you that it is far more important to have a good doctor than one who is personable. I’ll take skill over personality any day in a physician. I think you should feel free to call and talk to someone at the doctor’s office any time you have a question; it will ease your mind and I doubt they would think a thing of it.

It sure is very frustrating to realize you can’t carry things right now that spill. I am sure we could get all sorts of diamonds delivered to us at your place just by dropping our names and association with PS. That would be living, huh? An “ideal” life.

Those pregnancy pillows look like they might be a great help to you. I would try anything to help you sleep more comfortably.

I know they say it is best to take your pain meds before you hurt too bad because it helps keep the pain from getting too severe. I think you are doing things to help you with stress and anxiety. You have a lot going on and to think about but you are discussing your feelings with family, friends and PS members to just getting things off your chest hopefully makes you feel better. But if you find it all overwhelming I would talk to your doctor or PA about that too. They are there to help you.

I am glad you had the nurse visit and have a PT coming by soon. The ones who came to visit my mom were really nice and so helpful.

I hope you sleep well tonight! :wavey:

Jewel Freak: Yes, when I went to see the Orthopedic surgeon for an evaluation, when I had actually torn my LCL ( minor tear it turns out) and he was manipulating my knees, and the rest of my appendages, and he said they are moving beyond what they should have been for a normal range. This really explained why I consistently roll my ankles for no reason at all, I'll be walking (even in sneakers) and just roll my ankle-- even tore my muscle and ligaments in my right ankle due to a bad roll once. He just told me to be more mindful in my steps.

Missy: The stitches also might bring discomfort too because in the healing process, they tend to itch like mad, and the nerve endings, when they reconnect have this "on fire" sensation or sensations similar to a "zap" or "electricity."

As far as hydrocodone and oxy, you better talk to your MD about if you can use the hydrocodone for break through pain in between the oxy doses-- we do this a lot for patients in the hospital. But really, it's up to your pain management specialist or orthopedic surgeon to prescribe that regimen. Do not let them bully you, if it is not working, they need to find alternatives for you. (Disclaimer: this is not advice to take it or not in combo just check with your MD).

Marcy

Thank you Marcy! I felt less pain throughout the night though I did wake at 3AM for the last time and was unable to fall back to sleep. But that is OK as I am still in less pain and it feels so wonderful. It is amazing how differently I feel when the pain is more of a 4 than an 8 or 9 or 10. A world of difference.

My doctor actually called me back after 8 PM friday night to see why I called that morning. I was surprised because I was not expecting him to call Friday night after a full surgery schedule. He said it was OK to take more pain meds and to make sure the bandages were not too tight. I don't have bandages LOL but did not correct him. I mean he just had a full surgery schedule and was calling me back after 8PM after probably 12 hours of operations. No wonder he was a bit confused. But my dh had loosened my boot anyway earlier and the visiting nurse said it looked OK and she also put some gauze between some rubbing area on my foot that looked irritated from the boot.

I did not hear from the home PT department yet so hopefully they will call soon so I can start that.

I also ordered a pregnancy pillow (LOL never thought I would be saying those words haha) and it is due to come Tuesday and hopefully it will allow me more comfortable positions in which to sleep.

Stress and anxiety in check this morning woohoo. Yet another reason to feel grateful. Thank you Marcy for all your encouragement!

Hi Resonance of Life. That makes sense about the stitches and the row they left in is pretty long and IMO gruesome looking so I would not be surprised if they are bothering me a bit. I was experiencing terrible shooting pains in addition to the achey pains I was feeling so maybe that was in part due to the stitches.

Thanks about the advice about the oxy and hydro. I will check with my doctor next Thursday when I see him. I am sure when I begin PT I will be needing to take my pain meds on a regular basis if these last few weeks have taught me anything. I know we are all different with regards to pain but I had always thought that was an area I would be OK handling. Ouch turns out I was painfully (haha) wrong.

Another question and not sure you will know the answer but hope you don't mind me asking...my surgeon had said no weight bearing for at least 3 months. Does that include swimming? I had a brainstorm (take that word lightly from me these days as my brain isn't exactly razor sharp right now lol) last night about perhaps being able to swim over the next few months to keep in shape and healthy if that is not going to damage my leg.

My final stitches should be removed by next Thursday and I was wondering if you thought (and I will ask my surgeon but I like to think ahead as it gives me something to do lol) I might be allowed to swim a few times a week to maintain my health? I feel like such a slug and my body feels so uncomfortable just sitting around all day and if I was allowed to swim that would be awesome. Trying not to get my hopes up but if you had any thoughts about recovering from a broken leg and swimming I would love to hear them. Thank you!

Missy:

Getting in and out of a pool without weight bearing would be difficult. Huge risk of slipping on wet surface. Hence I would think swimming might be a, "no". Do you have those rubber tension bands like the physio's use? ? Those would be good to maintain upper arm strength. Lightweight and handy.

cheers--Sharon

If you swim at PT they have lift or chair-ish device to enter/exit the therapy pool.

Those bands are TheraBands and their various colors relate to ease of use.

Sharon, thank you. That makes sense and thank you for the rubber tension band suggestion. I also have free weights that I plan on starting because my surgeon said I could now. I have been a bit slow about doing them though because that was never my favorite. I am an aerobics girl but I need to adapt and tension bands are a great suggestion!

As for swimming I know you are right. I will still ask my surgeon this Thursday but expect to be shot down lol. I have a feeling that even if slipping and getting into and out of the pool wasn't a problem he would still say no because it probably is too soon to do any real activity with that leg. But maybe he will say it is OK in a month or so? I would be so happy if I could and Greg would be with me the whole time making sure I did not have any problems with slipping etc. But most definitely safety has to come first. I need to be very careful because one Pilon fracture in a lifetime is quite enough!

Thank you very much Sharon. :wavey:

I wonder if they have a PT pool at the HSS? I know where they offer PT near me there is no pool so I was just going to join a gym that had one. But I like your suggestion much better. Thank you Azstonie!

:wavey:

If you swim at PT they have lift or chair-ish device to enter/exit the therapy pool.

Those bands are TheraBands and their various colors relate to ease of use.

I wonder if they have a PT pool at the HSS? I know where they offer PT near me there is no pool so I was just going to join a gym that had one. But I like your suggestion much better. Thank you Azstonie!

I hear ya on the free weight thingie Misssy--notwithstanding wouldn't want to drop one of those on your leg!

Enjoy your day! :wavey:

Hi Missy! I am absolutely delighted to hear your pain has subsided. That will certainly boost your spirits and help you get some more sleep. Less pain does make a world of difference all right.

I am actually not surprised the doctor called you back. You’ve had major surgery and a good physician will certainly follow up with their patients that call in a question or concern. That is great to hear the boot feels better after loosening it up. I have heard they will rub you in spots so that was a good call for the nurse put some gauze in to help it where it was rubbing your foot. Like you need another “spot” to hurt right now, huh?

The PT that came to help my mom a few times was awesome. She was so nice, patient and helpful. That will be nice to have them come visit to get an idea of what they will let you do. You are eager to get started so you will be one of their star patients.

The pregnancy pillows actually sound pretty cool to use. DH had one of those body pillows for a while because he has restless legs and thought it might help his legs but he didn’t like it. It wasn’t anything special just a big pillow. We threw it out when me moved.

I am very happy to hear your anxiety and stress are in check this morning.

The regular Angry Birds loaded up a new segment that I worked on this week. I can sure waste time on that silly thing.

Enjoy the weekend. I hope you have a good day.

LOL I completely agree. That would not only hurt but that would definitely piss off my surgeon. Haha. Enjoy your weekend too Sharon! :wavey:

Thank you Marcy. Yes, having less pain makes the world seem much brighter. That's wonderful that your mom had a good physical therapist. It is such an important part of recovery.

I will let you know what I think of the pregnancy pillow when it arrives. I might wait for my last row of stitches to be removed before I try it as that part of my leg (outer part of left leg) is very sore due to that long row of stitches. I don't want to lean on it yet.

Thanks for the Angry Bird update and enjoy the weekend! :wavey:

Hi Missy. I would definitely wait for your stitches to be removed. They are slightly better than staples though. There is also an upside to everything, right?

So far my weekend is going well. Thanks. I hope you and your husband have a nice weekend as well. :wavey:

You cannot be at/in a public pool. Too dangerous from other people, they swim into you, bump you, etc. Then there's the sanitation aspect.

You won't be cleared to swim until your incisions are totally healed. Then, you could swim when cleared by surgeon at a PT/rehab pool, most likely one patient in the pool at a time with the therapist, lift or slidie-chair-thingie in and out of the pool.

He was confused 're bandages because he didn't have your file in front of him. Never ever be reticent about 'correcting' any staff including a doctor. They count on you to do this.

Thanks Marcy. I love the weekends because he is home and having him here with me the whole day is very nice.

Thanks azstonie. That's that then. Patience is not my forte but I am becoming well acquainted with it and hopefully will begin embracing that virtue as I can see there is no getting around it. I think it was Tolstoy who wrote that the two most powerful warriors are patience and time. Wise words and they certainly apply here.

And I should have corrected the doctor. You're right. Lesson learned and hopefully I didn't screw up anything by not speaking up. Thank you.

Hi Missy, Nice you are enjoying the time with your DH this weekend. I'm sure everything seems so much better when he is home. Is your pain any better today? I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to check in with you yesterday. Has anything changed? Do you still miss the cast?

If patience is not your forte you have been doing a great job of hiding it. You have been such a trooper Missy! With everything you have been thru you have been extremely patient.

I finally get around to getting up to date on your thread (rather than making you chase me to The Gold Thread) and you have to quote Tolstoy? The Russian writers are a very touchy subject for me, missy. I just read my first novel by a Russian writer (Crime and Punishment...see the book thread). It was not written by Tolstoy. Please, please do not make me feel that I have to read Tolstoy, missy! I was just getting my feet wet!

Big hugs,
Deb

PS-Meet me in The Gold Thread if you want to talk about your beautiful neck some more!

Hi missy! I've been in Shanghai with my husband this past week for a business function and am currently dealing with jet lag, and I'm basically incoherent at the moment so I'm going to make this short for now - just wanted to let you know you are in my thoughts every day, and I truly hope you are starting to feel at least a little more comfortable. this accident seems to constantly be bringing you new challenges, and you are handling them all really well - Even if you don't always think so. Big giant hugs being sent to you, I'll check in and write more when I'm back to normal! (well, as normal as possible lol)

Hi Missy, I am glad you are enjoying the weekend with your husband. It sounds like he makes everything better for you. That's great. My husband travels a lot and there are times I just latch on to him when he gets home.

I hope you had a decent nights sleep and aren't in too much pain today.

I am right there with you on patience. That is something I am in very short supply of - even my employees tease me when I tell them to patient they say because I set such a good example for them.

Sleep well!

Marcy

Hi Callie, we had a nice weekend thank you. I hope you did too and please there is absolutely no need to apologize for not posting here yesterday! I really appreciate all you are doing for me and you deserve a break...figurative please LOL as we have had enough literal breaks to last a lifetime for everyone IMO! And as far as patience goes I truly am not a patient person but when one has no choice you do the best you can and that is all I am doing.

Pain is about the same today but all the diversions help and I actually had a home PT initial eval today. I was surprised when they called and said Sunday but I was happy about it and when she called at 10AM this morning saying she would be here in 30 minutes I had to take a quick shower and shampoo but I was ready. I am getting to be a pro at my shower and shampoo routine. I still need Greg to help me unfortunately but I hope I can soon go it without him.

The PT session/eval was very basic. Just flexing my ankle and foot and toes and then some bending and stretching of both legs. I have almost no range of motion in the left ankle, foot and toes and it was hard to see that if you kwim. I felt like I was looking at a foreign leg and foot. Surreal. She told me to do the flexing of the ankle and toes and foot 10 times about 3-4 times a day. I did it once before dinner after my morning session and will try for 3 times tomorrow. I need to take it slow at first I think. I also don't love taking off the boot and seeing my leg but well I am sure I will become desensitized to that soon enough. I don't miss the cast over the boot anymore except for when it comes to sleeping as the boot feels much heavier. But I hope I will also get used to that too. Humans are very adaptable beings fortunately!

Greg was encouraging saying it would get better as the weeks go on but I was disappointed at how little motion I have in that foot and ankle right now. The PT who came today is not my regular PT as she was just here for the initial. She looked at my X-rays and said it was the worse break she had seen. LOL it was Sunday morning and she was probably tired and not thinking because I don't think that is something you say to someone who is in my position but that's OK. I already know that it's a bad break but I am going to work very hard and get back as much function as I can.

I know this is going to be a very long long process and I am mentally ready. I just hope physically I can handle it because right now I am weak. I started doing upper body free weights this afternoon just to get started regaining my strength as it's been over 4 weeks of no activity from someone who never went a day without it.

We also played lots of board games and a few card games as well. We got a lot in today and it went very fast. Soon it will be bedtime and that is the time of day I like least. But I know as each day passes I am getting closer to being whole again.

Thanks for cheering me on Callie. I hope you enjoyed the weekend and have a great night!

LOL Deb, you are making me laugh again and if you keep doing that everyone will think I am back to my normal self haha. Thank you!
Did you enjoy Crime and Punishment? I am going to have to check out the Book Thread tomorrow as I am very curious to see what you thought.
And I will visit the Gold Thread tomorrow as well. I am hoping for more pictures of your gorgeous gold jewelry. Big (((hugs))).

Dear Junebug! How was your trip to Shanghai? I hope you had an amazing time and I hope you have some adventures to share with us. I know how tough jet lag is so please get a good night's slumber and I hope you wake up refreshed and energized...welcome home! :wavey:

Thank you for keeping me in your thoughts and thank you for being so encouraging every step of the way. I so appreciate that and I feel the good vibes and big hugs from here. I am doing my best to meet each challenge and sometimes I start with a good cry so not sure if that is handling it very well but a good cry sometimes gives me the energy I need to go on and rise to the challenge if that makes sense. Big hugs being sent your way and may sweet dreams be yours tonight.

Thank you Marcy. I hope you get to spend more time with your dh in the coming weeks and that you both enjoy the wonderful weather together.
LOL about your patience and what the employees say. I hear you. After this if I am not a more patient person I don't think I ever will be. 8)

Have a great night and I hope you sleep well too!

You'll be back doing everything and have your health too.

Your leg pics look fantastic to me. I do know what you mean about the removed feeling from it, I do remember that.

I am so sorry the PT said that. So so rude and unprofessional and also uncalibratable. It's a sad thing, people in health care can become insensitive and coarse.
