Hey DancingFire -

If you do decide to get a purebred dog, please make sure that you do your homework and buy from a reputable breeder and not a puppy mill! There is a huge price range when it comes to purebred dogs... just make sure that your dog has healthly bloodlines...

I paid about $650 for my boston terrier and $3,000 for my french bulldog! (Hubby had the choice of a big TV or a new puppy for christmas a few years ago... he saw the puppy pictures and that was the end of the debate)

I actually don't think big dogs are safer than small dogs OR vice versa...it's more about the dog itself, I have seen mean big dogs and mean small ones....but what I meant was that if you are deathly AFRAID of dogs, getting a big dog right off the bat may not be the best way to get over the fear...sometimes people feel more comfortable with smaller dogs because they feel more 'in control' of the situation than with how fast a big dog can grow from a small puppy to a large dog.

The one thing I will say that always freaks me out when I am out in the park amidst the racing dogs is that a 100 lb dog barreling into your legs can actually break them, whereas a 15 lb dog barreling into your leg just makes it sore. hee hee.

I used to be scared of dogs until I babysat my boss''s daughter. They had a big lab mix that is only 1 year old and an old crocker spaniel. The lab would put his front paws on me and try to jump me. It was frightening at first, but then I realize that he is just being playful. Ever since I love dogs. Maybe the dog will change your mind too if you end up getting one. I read that golden retriever are very friendly and great with kids. I don''t think you have anything to worry about, and $600 sounds really reasonable to me. I want one too, but DH won''t let me get one since they have a crocker spaniel already.

Then I''d suggest you buy a dog house...a large one.... big enough for you to sleep in!

Sooner or later the dog (if it is a golden retriever) will be in your koi pond. And if you say anything afterwards, you will be in....

....the dog house!
