My husband and I are going to NYC next week to jewelry (ring, in all likelihood) shop.

Please post shops to look for and ones to avoid, and any good/bad experiences you have had.

Thanks!

Are you opposed to going out to Long Island to see Good Old Gold? I would strongly recommend you do so. Take the LIRR train, I think you get it from the big subway station near MSG? Penn Station I think it was called. It's about a 1 hour ride, you exit at Massapequa Park and you could pretty much walk to it from there if you were inclined. On a cold or really warm day I'd cab it the half mile though.

We visited them after the Diamond District and purchased from GOG and we are really pleased we did. We got a ton of great info, more than any dealer in the district was willing to offer. They also carry a TON of different cuts. If you do plan to visit, let them know about 2 weeks ahead so they can call in things within your budget that they might not already have in stock.

Not opposed, but not sure we can make it fit into the day...Really want to have lunch at Nobu, and MUST have dinner with my brother in Manhattan (or he will de-sibling me)...hmmm...an hour out, hour there and hour back is almost half the day...

Maybe I'll email over there with my budget, see what they have in stock (going next week) and let that determine whether it will be worth the trip.

ID Jewelry in the diamond district!! They are awesome to work with , and have such pretty stuff!!! :appl:

do you want to see amazing jewelry or loose diamonds?

All LIRRs leave from Grand Central!

Bgray- both I guess.

I need to narrow down the ring style, and I have found that what I like in photos is not always what I like on my hand...

I also need to figure out my color tolerance...I own a .8ct J colored diamond. It is VERY borderline for me, so I can't imagine I would be ok with J in a 2ct stone unless it had flouro...but I don't know what my cut off IS...can I live with H? I??

I also need to figure our what center stone size I will be happy with.

Then I need to roll the details around a bit, and see what is going to fit in my budget....

For a large selection of settings, I'd go to Michael C Fina (on 45th and 5th). I wouldn't necessarily buy from them but it's a great place to try a ton of designer settings.

If you do go to LI, by the way, the trains leave form Penn Station, not from Grand Central.

For loose stones, Peter LaRouche of LaRouche Diamonds in the big jewelry district building, 578 5th ave (tel 212-840-6171). I've bought loose certified stones from him, and he was priced as competitively as Whiteflash, where we ended up buying my engagement diamond. He has some settings too, but you'll find larger selections elsewhere. I think there are several PS vendors in the diamond district as well, you'll want to check them out. I can't speak from personal experience on the NYC PS vendors, but I'm sure you can do a search on this site.

I'd suggest Eternity Diamonds...Yoni is terrific and their prices are great. My advice is to stay away from Elize Diamonds and Roman Malakov, which are under the same ownership. Google them if you want details.

Stay away from Timeless Diamonds... GO to GOG!! Jonathan is AWESOME!

I would call to make sure that Jonathan is there first. I'd also check out JamesAllen (seems to have the best pricing for RBs, IMO) and ERD (a good source of chunky cushions). But I would call every PS vendor that you want to visit, and tell them generally what you're looking for to make sure that they have at least a couple diamonds in your specs.

Just showing up can be a bit hit or miss because even GOG (the only B&M PS merchant) carries some virtual inventory (e.g., not in the store unless they call it in).

Mark at ERD is wonderful...but you need an appointment.

I would check out ERD and Diamonds by Lauren

My sister, best friend, and myself have all purchased rings from ID Jewelry (www.idjewelryonline.com). Yekutiel is great. Give him a call before you arrive to tell him what you're looking for. Have fun in NYC! The holidays are a great time to visit. :)

I second Yekutiel from ID jewelry !! one of the best prices around and so knowledgeable ! mention pricescope for extra discount.

also, James Allen --> look at their online inventory and call their customer service to have stones held for your viewing at their manhattan office, appointment required (45th street and 5th ave, 2 block from diamond district). Julianna is kind, friendly, cool to talk to and really helpful ! also mention pricescope for extra discount.

also, I live in NYC and have been seeing the news about LIRR ... please make sure to check on the LIRR extensive delay updates on their website, their weekend services have been significantly slowed down by their construction project and the news have been telling us to plan for an extra 1 hour or more on top of the regular traveling time for riding on LIRR.
