Call him. I sometimes find it better to call, then continue the convo via email. He has lots more stones than listed on his website.

So i got an email back from him. Your guys thoughts?

Ask for all 4 on the back of the hand. It is difficult to judge colour as is.

Will do, I like the radiant though.

Also ask if they fluoresce. If you can find examples of stones you like, show him those as well.

I don't want to dissuade you, but at first glance, they all look very purple to me on my monitor. I hope IRL they're more of the reddish color you're seeking.

I cheated a little and had the recipient tell me what she thought of that stone. She seemed to really love the color. (The original pear) so I'm thinking about just getting it. There's a pear setting with baguettes I found on eBay that miiight fit it, it says 6x9 but the pest is closer to 8.3x5.5....think that's doable??

That should be doable. If she likes it, than that's good. The price is important as well, since it should be fair. I hope the setting has a v-tip, which is better for pears.

Definitely go with a v-tip for a pear setting. Another caution is that not all pears have the same "fatness" ratio but I think you already know that since you had a pear previously, correct? It is possible you could end up with a small airline at certain places.

Yeah I'm aware of the v tip and the differing shapes, so I agree its risky. Here's the setting. And the pear again

You can tell the pear isn't symmetrical either if you draw an imaginary line from the tip to the centerline of the pear. For some people, they cannot see it so it's not a big deal; it's not going to bother them. For others (myself included), this will bug me to no end. I don't know where she stands on this. I'm not trying to dissuade you at all; just laying down the facts and possible negative points. Honestly, I think most people won't even notice it.

What do you think about the setting?

IMO a white metal like that is going to make the orangy red color look more brown. I would go with yellow gold, a buttery high karat yellow gold.

Well 14K yellow is better than white metal for that stone IMO. What is your budget for the setting? Maybe someone can find you something.

My budget for the entire ring is 700. And she wants a setting with diamonds.

A few more I like the trillion best. None look as red as the original one to me. All look pinkish

There is a sticky above that has a bunch of vendor listings, and in there are some ebay setting dealers. I would look at them. A pear shaped baguette setting in 18K yellow gold should be doable for $700. I recommend those dealers, and LOGR is a little higher priced than the other ones if I'm not mistaken. They can do any setting in any gold color/karat of your choice. Always make an offer on "make an offer" listings. I usually start with about 60% of the buy it now price, and they will counter offer if its too low. It's another $10 extra for resizing.

The trillion looks the "muddiest" and most extinct to me out of all of them. Did Jaimeen say they fluoresce?

Tan's pear looks the best for color, based on what you've posted. From Prima, the trillion looks like it has a lot of extinction. The other stones from Prima are not well saturated.

When you say that the recipient likes the pear from Tan, does that mean you've already purchased it?

The whole ring is 700. Not just the setting.

We didn't buy it I just showed her the link.

And I don't know what extinction is. I asked Prema sabout it they said that was the best one. And doesn't get too dark.

Extinction is explained in the link off of LD's education post titled "New to coloured gemstone buying? Read this first!" (https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/new-to-coloured-gemstone-buying-read-this-first.174284/)
You can find this post at the top of the topics for this subforum (Colored Stones Forum).

Excerpt:

"Cut:

Another word you may see when discussing colour or performance is "extinction". Extinction is basically when a gemstone has lots of "black" areas - when you move the gemstone around some parts will remain black and NOTHING you do will make that change. If a gemstone has been cut so that it has extinction, it'll always have extinction! See the second photo below and here's a link that discusses it in great, easily to understand, detail: http://www.ruby-sapphire.com/brilliance_windows_extinction.htm""

Well Prima had specifically said it specifically didn't go dark compared to the pear I like that said did get more dark than he'd like.

what do you guys think of this.... its heavily included, has a surface breaking inclusion i guess, but the color looks nice and so does the setting

You could ask to see the trillion. I've had to return stones before finding the one.

That last one is so included that it looks nearly opaque. I'd pass.

meh it just sold anyways..............................

this is no fun. Diamonds are fun. ;(

could you explain to me a little more about this, LOGR has rings listed, but if you email or bid and say "this ring with this shape and this gold" do they do that?

Yes, LOGR can customize rings - I've had them use a yellow gold basket on a white gold ring, and I imagine they'd also be able to make that setting for a trilliant as well. I just email Stephan directly at [email protected] and ask him how much he would charge for a particular setting with the changes I'm requesting (including making it in my ring size). When I don't upgrade the diamonds or the gold, his price with customizations hasn't been much different than the price you see on eBay. At least that has been my experience. I wish you much luck, I think the chrysoberyl trilliants in your recent post would look great in that setting! Your almost there, don't give up now ;)

when you said upgrade diamonds, are the diamonds they use nice enough already or do i have to ask for nice diamonds to get them?

It's been years since I purchased an LOGR, so maybe others can vouch for the current quality of their diamonds. However in my experience, a long long time ago, if I didn't upgrade the diamonds, I wasn't sure if I would get sparkly ones or cloudy ones. In other words, if you don't upgrade, the diamond quality can be inconsistent. Perhaps they've improved, so wait for other responses.

Last I heard too, they would charge a $50 fee just to make a new mold to customize a piece. I don't know if this fee has gone up since then (likely it has), so double check. Therefore, if you want a heart setting to fit a trillion, expect to probably pay at least $50 just to do that, on top of the other upgrade fees. If the ring requires more diamonds, better diamonds, more gold, higher karat weight, etc. . . .pay extra.

Hi Neil,

I, like you, think the orange red spinel from Tan is beautiful. You have shown it to the woman who is going to wear it, and she likes it so why do you continue on?. The other spinels shown are not as nice, in my opinion, and you will not get a top colored spinel in your price range. The woman will have a beautiful ring. I agree the yellow gold would look best, but the shank can be white gold if she prefers white gold. Your choose, for your budget is excellent.
