Old Cut Lovers...... please sign in!

yeah--- in rockytalky or hangout
it was easy to find b4

I had trouble finding it right now.

Blinky, I don''t know about french cuts, but I''m always ready to find out!

Wow!! I wondered where this thread had disappeared to. So many beautiful old pieces to be lost among all the other threads.

Single stone has the best eye candy!

My favorite old cut: OMC.

How I wish this one is mine.

It''s a 4.5 carat iirc.

How much smaller do old cuts face up than a modern cut? One of my coworkers said her mom has an 1ct OEC but looks more like .75.

Oh How I love old cut diamonds!
Here are my 2 transitional cut diamond rings.

zhu,
I don''t mean to burst your bubble - but that bottom diamond does not resemble a transitional cut at all imho.
The top one - that is also debatable.

They are both pretty - but I''m just not sure if you should continue buying diamonds that are purported to be old cuts from a certain period and having a certain look, but are very possibly not.

Gosh, haven't seen this thread in forever.

Zhu, I agree with AJ that it's hard to tell much about either stone from the photo, but the bottom stone does look like it could be an earlier MRB. Can't really tell much about the top stone due to angle, but it does look as though it could possibly be older cut.

I didn't realize that I hadn't put this one up previously, so I'm adding it now. It's a 2.18 stone - I initially thought it was OEC, but it's possible that it may be OMC too. The color is a bit warmer in diffused lighting, but these photos really capture the flashes of fire that come from older cuts with high crowns. The setting is a platinum repro setting with single cuts.

Hi AJ,
I have had the sapphire ring appraised by a gemologist and it is indeed a transitional cut. I am enjoying the fact that even though it is not an OEC it is still an old cut.

Allison, your ring is simply breath-taking! I especially like the setting it is in. Did you have it re-set in this setting? or did it come this way?

well as long as you are enjoying it than thats what matters zhu

Zhu, the stone didn't come in that setting. When I found it at a local jeweler, it was in the heavy yellow gold men's ring setting below before I 'rescued' it.

The new setting is a platinum reproduction sourced from a dealer that another PSer had previously met at an antique jewelry show in Miami. He's based in NY, so when a small group from the Boston PS group made a road trip for the antique jewelry show last year in NYC, we made a pit stop on the way to connect with him.

Interestingly enough, when I voiced my plan to have the bezel milgrained, the dealer discouraged it saying he didn't feel there was enough material. However, the setter felt differently and I'm so glad he was able to do it because I think it adds so much to the piece.

Alison, is this the 2.18 OEC you mentioned in the other thread? It''s beautiful!! Hopefully I can be as lucky as you.

Oh yes, and count me in as an Old Cut Lover. I''m on the hunt for my perfect antique diamond.

Wow!! Allison always keeps her beauties close to the chest. I''m so glad to see that beauty posted here!!! It sure is good to see this thread again.

Thankyou Maisie and Hest

Maisie, hopefully it will look even bigger when set, as I''ve pretty much decided it''s going in an 8 prong setting

It will be smoking hot! Did you get inspired by that pair of OEC earrings also?
I did not know that you are from Australia until one of the threads I browsed over. How cool is that!

Hey zhu,

Cheers! actually, although Yssie''s studs are gorgeous, I was inspired to go 8 prong after Heyjudes thread in which she was searching for a setting for her new ebay OEC - we started searching together, and I found an image from Lang Antiques that I loved for my own

yup, Western Australia born and bred, lol..It would be cooler if there were better jewellers / gem sellers here, he he..

Okay, after all these years I've finally taken a picture I'm semi happy with.

My .96 H color OMC, set in a Tacori ring:

Love it! Did you buy the stone to set it in Tacori?

I LOVE OECs with flowery facets and a small but visible open culet and OMCs with chunky facets and a slightly larger open culet

sigh...someday:-)

I'm a convert and I absolutely love this thread!

I originally adored antique asschers, and now I'm an OEC/OMC/Transitional fan.

This is a .46 ct. H SI1 OEC with a .28 ct. J, SI2 OMC bezeled above it.

And my .67 ct. OEC - sold as a J VS2, but my appraisal was an H VS2.
