Online vendor measurements- innaccurate? Rings too thin!

I'm just wondering about the accuracy of ring widths when bought online. Both my engagement ring and wedding ring are thinner than it says they are on the website.
My engagement ring is from BGD and is supposed to be 2mm thick, but it's actually around 1.6-1.7mm which is thinner than I like. I have grown to love it though but I do wish it was actually 2mm.

I received my wedding band yesterday. It is absolutely beautiful, it is this one from the Facets collection http://www.Thefacetscollection.com/Platinum-Channel-Set-Eternity-Band-36-Round-p/f1428s.htm but in white gold, and customised to have diamonds only halfway around (19 diamonds, 0.29 carat weight). It was supposed to be 2.5mm but when I measured with a tape measure it is only 2mm. It was customised so I can't return it, and my wedding is in four weeks. I specifically wanted a 2.5mm band so it would look reasonably thicker than my ER. I find they look too thin together and the whole look is underwhelming. I'm wishing I just got the 10 stone wedding band which measures at 2.7mm (or it's supposed to)

Are measurements online not accurate? You save money buying online but when measurements aren't what they are supposed to be it's disappointing. Not sure if I should complain or if this is the way it is? Could white gold be added to the outside of my wedding ring to make it thicker?

Thanks for any advice....

I think it looks great.

Thanks, but it's not the look I want. I have long fingers and the rings just blend together.

Hmmm, I think they look lovely together. If you'd like more presence, you can get another band and start stacking. This is called enabling. :naughty:

I would call Facets and express your concern. They may offer something in exchange - particularly if it's more money! If you wanted a thicker band, you'd probably have to go with larger stones. They really can't add gold to the outside bands of the ring. I think the rings look lovely together and the thinner band on the ering makes the diamond pop all the more.

I think I will email them. I'm in Australia so can't really call them now. I do like the stacked look, but I won't be getting another ring for awhile! I just wonder why it says 2.5mm when it's only 2mm. I think I either need a thicker ER or thicker wedding band, the two together look too thin and delicate to me.

Gosh, if it were me, I'd be contacting Facets about the order mix-up, and letting them you know will be returning this band (at their expense) and anxiously waiting for the 2.5mm diamond band - they will have to make a new one of course, but you actually ordered and paid for a 2.5mm band - receiving a 2mm band, however beautiful and well-made, is unacceptable (in my eyes).

ITA with marymm - you didn't get what you ordered, which just isn't right and should be rectified IMO. I would definitely contact Facets about this.

I think this happens a lot unfortunately. I have ordered many rings online, and the widths did not match the descriptions. It's very frustrating. I'm with you--personally I like a more substantial shank.

The mm's matter. If the width of a ring is going to be 1.6 to 1.7 mm the website should not say it is 2 mm.

You need to measure the bands with calipers. Any good local jeweler will have a set on hand.

I agree that the rings need to be measured with calipers before you contact them. But if the wedding band is only 2mm and it said 2.5mm, then I agree with the others that you need to call them and tell them they did not make the ring you ordered.

Yes.

Honestly, without digital calipers I wouldn't jump to judgments. I wouldn't be able to tell for sure. Rounded bands often measure wider than they appear.

In the mean time you might want to get two stiff pieces of card, and sandwich the ring with them, then measure between those.

From your picture I have a feeling it's a trick of the eye and the curved parts of the ring are not being measured.

I agree about having both rings measured using calipers, as I feel like it's an illusion due to the curvature (as kay1 stated). Kinda like how a knife edge band can look a lot thinner than it actually is... However, if the measurements come back as thinner than described, I would have new ones made -- that would be the vendor's "Oops!" :))

I'm kinda doubting your measuring tape there too....... For what it's worth I think they look AMAZING on your hand. Yes -go to a jeweler.

You guys were right, it was a trick of the eye! It measured at 2.45mm with calipers. So, I will keep it, and might add a plain white gold band to thicken up the stack. Or maybe I'll get another diamond band for my 30th at the end of the year!
I guess having thin bands does allow more for stacking :)
