Pathetic Photoshop job, I know, but others are welcome to improve it.

Nice job Kenny...

As for the other photos- at your leisure.... this is at least a 12-24 month project. i am still waiting for the Octa CZ to become available so that i can physically see the difference in dimensions from what i currently wear. Being in AUS, makes it so much harder to deal with viewing and imagining the diamond and ring.

Greg, how's this?

The ring is a platinum Gelin Abaci setting size 8.
The stone is a round 0.82 ct E VVS1 ACA, 6.03 x 6.05 x 3.68 mm per AGS.

About the distance from the culet to the skin ...
In regular rings the full circle is metal so there is metal under the culet that prevents the skin from bulging up and touching the cutlet.
Not so in a tension setting.
That gap we love so much allows the skin of some people to bulge up and touch the culet.
This is why a standard setting can be lower-profile than a tension setting.

The makers of tension setting have a real dilemma.
Some customers will want the culet to never touch their skin and others will want the diamond as low as possible and not mind the culet touching a bit at times.

Besides whichever preference the customer vocalizes, the problem is some people have more fat in their fingers than others.
Some retain more water at times making their fingers swell.
Fingers are smaller when color and larger when hot.
Time of day matters too; I notice my ring is tightest right when I wake up.

What's a ring-maker to do?
I doubt you'll hear a single one ask, "Hey lady, how fat are your fingers?"
They rather like getting paid.

I suspect they err on the side of caution and make the gap between the skin and the culet on the large size.
You apparently want the lowest profile possible but want a tension setting.
Discuss this at length with the maker of your ring.
If you want a very low-profile ring like you have now a tension setting may not be right for you.

Greg, I just put a 2 and a 2 together.

The two walls on the gap of some of Steven Kretmer's tension settings are not parallel.
They are angled like this:

Perhaps the reason, or just the effect, is this allows the culet to be lower because (compared to a gap with vertical walls) less skin can bulge up into the gap.

Perhaps anyone you get to make the tension setting can make it this way.

Now that I mention this I notice my Boonering's gap has parallel sides but the Gelin Abaci gap's sides are tapered, though not as tapered as the Steven Kretchmer designs.

THanx Kenny for the photos!!!!! You are a champ for indulging me. :appl: :appl:

It seems that the tensions settings have a minimum distance of about 1-1.5mm between the culet and the skin. And I totally get that some ppl like the culet closer to the skin or not having the culet touching skin at all. i am not sure which camp i am in with that one.

I do like the tension setting of the O that you have. I have always wanted to have that setting but i got talked out of having that setting by my jeweller. :nono: :nono: ;( The current setting that i have is one that i have termed semi tension for the purposes of this conversation/ thread, as it looks like a tensions setting but with bar under it. it is a pain with cleaning as the dirt catches under the bar. I also want as much light as possible to bounce in around and out of it, and i think the bar may reduce that somewhat.

I think you have also pointed out that with the tension setting makes it so much easier to clean! However, the perceived trade off is that i 'can't' have the diamond set lower.

The dilemma that i have is that i need to have low profile with work. Maybe i have to get Bruce to put a bar under there so that it can be set lower... which will seem like a shame to not show off the O!!!!

Oh- i just saw your post on the Steven Kretmer's setting. I like the profile, i wonder what it would look like from the top. i will search the setting.
Ok, gotta get back to work...

Thanx susimoo. I live in AUS so it may make a difference on shipping internationally, but will be asking the question to the vendor doing a consignment. This was also suggested in a differnt thread i am following. Definitely up for another PS GTG when I am back in the USA!

Gypsy - thanx for chiming in! Really appreciate it. :wavey:

It is now a matter of addressing how it is going to work with the current eternity. I am working on the photos that Kenny posted earlier..
I am thinking that the diamond has to be set lower, therefore the profile between the solitaire and the eternity would not be that great.
If it is set too high, it will interfere with wearing gloves! :-(

This is fun!

I'm in Perth too!! I missed the last get together because my relatives were here. I am assuming you were there. I met lots of the other PS'ers, including Ginger, who I know you are friends with, about a year ago. That's why I wanted to let you know that the shipping internationally can easily be taken care of. I have done it several times without incident. :wavey:
