I think it is a Dogue de Bordeaux. Here is a bit of info from my favourite and indispensible dog book. " During the middle ages, the Dogue de Bordeaux was considered to be a brutal and expendable beast." They were used for hunting bear and wild pigs. They were considered to be heavy and unattractive dogs and it was considered to be no great loss if one was killed in a fight. By the end of the middle ages, the D d B had acquired a new role as a working dog, being used by butchers to drive their cattle to market. Today, the breed is enjoying a return to favour, renowned for it''s gentleness and devotion ( as in pics!).
