Is there a good place to go to educate myself about pearl quality and grading? I obviously know where to go on the forum if I need a new diamond. Since the pearl section is so new do we have any educational material anywhere?

Hi Ponder,

You can begin your pearl education with the International School of Gemology, www.schoolofgemology.com they have a terrific pearl and gem course. Also the GIA has a pearl course that will open up a world of knowledge for you.

I also highly recommend Elizabeth Strack''s book titled simple "Pearls"

Happy Studying

Thanks Julie,

I want to make some quality pearl purchases but can barely tell high quality from plastic. I feel the need to educate myself before making any serious purchases. I will check out the info and be back when my DH agrees to my next purchase.

You''re very welcome. Let me know how it goes.

I have been specializing in, and studying pearls for the past 10 years now, and there is always more to learn. Please let me know if I can help you with your studies. The basic education you''ll get from either (or both) of those schools will be a terrific beginning for you.

Being able to discern real pearls from fake pearls will become second nature to you. Fake pearls are perfect, and do not have the weight, or heft, of real pearls (when I say ''real'' I am referring to cultured or naturals). The most challenging characteristic of pearls is being able to judge luster. That takes quite a bit of practice, but it''s the one area that can greatly affect pearl value.

good luck!
