Hello everyone! I will likely purchase an engagement ring in the next week, and I have picked a setting that I am sure my hopefully-soon-to-be-fiancee will love. My question, however, is whether I should place a round diamond or a marquise diamond. Here are the pictures (copy and paste b/c the links did not work properly):
http://img.bluenile.com/is/image/bluenile/-14k-white-gold-engagement-ring-setting-/setting_template_main?$520_440$&$diam_shape=is{bluenile/main_MQ_standard_50}&$diam_position=25,10&$ring_position=0,0&$ring_sku=is{bluenile/21011_setmain}

As far as I can tell, here are the pros for each:

Round: ideal cut, no edges to get caught on things, F color, SI1.

Marquise: imo it looks better on the setting, and marquise tend to look bigger at the same carat size, F color, VVS2, very good cut.

I guess I have three questions: Will the ideal cut round look much better than the very good cut marquise? Will the marquise edges really cause that much of a problem? My girlfriend does not work in the service industry or anything, so that should not be a problem. Finally, will the marquise get in the way of a wedding band?

Thank you in advance for your help everyone!

which does your lady prefer? It's her opinion that matters not ours.

also you should not buy a marquise at blue nile. with rounds at blue nile stick ti signature idwal and use the hca.

May I ask why not to buy a marquise from blue nile? And that's the problem- my lady does not wear much jewelry at all, so I am not sure which shape she would prefer, and I am trying to keep this a surprise.

Marquise is quite a risky choice compared to a round if you're not super sure that's what the girl loves. Would you be able to inquire her preferences through her girlfriends? Buy a cheap marquise cz center stone ring, give it to her gf to show her as her "new ring" and get her to talk about it. :naughty:
That is, if you really prefer the marquise and would like to go with that. Otherwise I would opt for the round or other more conservative options - cushion or princess.

Rounds can be bought pretty safely by numbers alone. Find one with the right angles and pic the color, you pretty much know what you are getting. Marquise can look very different. You have to be able to see what your buying. That means buy from a place that provides pictures as well as ASETS.

my advise if you don't know what she likes but want to surprise her is to check her pinterest if she has one. Either her board or her "likes" will usually have at least a few e rings in there, and will help you get a sense of what she likes. If she doesn't have a pinterest ask a sister or best friend to help. :)

Marquise are beautiful and are coming back around. It could make a lovely ring, but with any shape wed first want to know if she likes it.

Thank you for the responses everyone! I'm off to see what I can find out. She unfortunately does not have a pinterest, but I'll see what I can do.

Marquise is only safe if she has shown you a ring in the past and has said she'd love a diamond marquise. If she hasn't, please forget that idea. Marquise come and go in style and they have been out for a very long time, so I wouldn't even consider it. Round is always safe since it is traditional and never goes out of style. I also do not buy from BN because they do not offer pictures, idealscope images, or an upgrade policy. There's no way I'd spend thousands of dollars and buy blind. We can show you better settings than that one as well. If this is the setting, it has I SI2 good cut diamonds in it. I would want better quality diamonds than that in an engagement ring.

Stick with round. While Marquis are making a come back they are still a trend(y). Stick with what is classic and you can't go wrong. For an erring I would never advise anyone to gamble.

Fair enough- unless I see something that leads me to believe she would really like a marquise, I will avoid it. And I would be more than happy to take a look at other settings- I'm just afraid my limited budget will play a factor (around $4000).

I guess I should have said what little I know about her taste- she doesn't like anything huge or complex, so it has to be fairly simple. That being said, I want more than just a solitaire: I think a simple three stone setting with or without small diamonds along the band is what I'm looking for, similar to the one I posted. If anyone has any other ideas (preferably at a website where I can actually see pictures of the center diamond I buy) that would be extremely helpful. Thanks everyone!

What do you think of this setting, i like the idea of getting one without diamonds in the band. If you utilize only one element, that way it still looks simple, but you get the same look by adding a w band with diamonds.

looks like you can get a .7 ct isn if you go to H :), here were some nice ones i saw under 3k

this is by far my favorite pear setting, but its a bit expensive, it would leave you room for a .6 ct

but if you said she's fine with a more subtle size, this would be a lovely option. This ones in yellow gold but i mean you could do any color, really. (this is just the link i clicked lol)

Thank you for all the replies! I really like the Brian Gavin Diamonds setting, but I will have to think about dropping to .6c. Her ring size is 6.5, so not terribly big but not tiny either.

Is your budget a firm 4k or is there some wiggle room?

It's pretty firm at 4k. The above setting + .6c diamond is around 4.2k, and I can live with that. I can't do very much more than that at all, unfortunately.

Understandable.

Well i think Brian Gavin may even go down a little if you ask for a Pricescope discount. I do believe they offer that.

Otherwise this I would put you under 4k. I'd ask BG if which has better clarity, and if the I would match the pears though, if i went the I route.

I might do a live chat with BG if i was you, see if they have any photos of rings around .6cts in the size and design you're looking at.

Also, I assume sense your original pics where white metal that you looked at her jewelry and she wears mostly white metal? I know you said she doesn't wear much, but when she does she prefers white?

Yeah, she prefers silver/white gold. And thanks for letting me know about the possible discount- I'll look into it, although I'm a really new member (today), so I'm not sure how they will feel about that.

Doesn't matter, Yeah id just pop over, they have a live chat you can start, though it may make you email sense its saturday. Just ask if what discount would be on one or both of those diamonds, and ask if they might be able to provide you some photos.

have you gone to the store to try on any rings with her yet? if so, what ctw were you trying on at the store

She has never tried on a ring with me- only looked. That being said, I think .6c is big enough, especially because it is such a good cut.

I do have one more question though- I want to get the ring engraved with the day of our first date, but should I wait until when (if) it will need to be resized? I am unfamiliar with how resizing works, and I would hate for it to ruin the engraving.

Im not sure. I would think you could ask them to place the engraving in such a way that its not overlapping any area they would use for sizing. But do you think you could get her finger sized before you buy just to be double sure?? A gal doesn't like to get her ring just to have to give it back for a week or two for sizing.

I do agree that Marquise are risky.

But I would like to give you another option.

This is a lovely cushion
http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/10886/ $2530 which leaves you with a great budget for a setting. Same spread as the 60 point round. But a nicely rounded square cushion.

And really it is a gorgeous stone.

GOG is a Beverly K vendor and can get you this setting for it: http://www.elizabetajewelry.com/products/beverley-k-diamond-engagement-ring-semi-mount-center-stone-not-included-number-tj023-slash-65sq $1,190.00 GOG WILL ORDER IT FOR YOUR EXACT STONE MEASUREMENTS.

So:
2530
1190
-------
$3720

And honestly it would blow most women away.

Well its quite difficult to say what your girl will probably like. But most of the girls don't like marquise diamond placed on ring. I'd suggest you to go for the round shape instead.

Thank you everyone for your help! I decided to go with the Brian Gavin ring that Niel posted. Cross your fingers for me that she says yes!
