My partner and I have been looking at e-rings and had decided on a white and pink diamond setting. Unfortunately, due to a sudden change in my partner''s brother''s circumstances, our ring fund has beed drained somewhat.

Rather than put off our engagement and subsequent wedding, we are tossing up the idea of getting a "place-keeper" ring which I can switch to my right hand when the real one comes along.

I do love a pink stone and have a divine pair of white and pink diamond earrings already! So, I was thinking about getting a pink sapphire e-ring.

I tried on a 1.03ct emerald cut sapphire with trilliant sides set in 18k white gold. When I looked into the stone, I could see small crystals on certain angles. It wasn''t obvious, just visible on certain angles - almost like the diamonds were reflecting into the stone, if that makes sense.

Is this normal or was this just a poor quality stone? Any other suggestions on a "place keeper" ring? We have also thought about a Tiffany-style etoile wide band or a diamond set Altas ring. You opinions are much appreciated!

do you want the place-keeper to look engagement-y or more versatile?

Hi Belle, thanks for the reply.

I''m still open to suggestions regarding the ring looking "engagmenty". One jeweller I visited was quite shocked that I would consider a band-type ring (either the Etoile, Atlas or eternity band). But it''s not FOR them, or anyone else. I have always liked the Etoile and the Atlas so that''s why they are an option as I know I''d love them as a RHR too!

The reason I was thinking of the pink sapphire and diamonds is that the ring we decided on was a 1ct RB white diamond centre with pink pear diamond shoulders. So the pink sapphire centre with diamond sides is kind of a reverse version.

Shelly, Check out www.signedpieces.com there are lots of pink sapphire and diamond rings there. They can also make them in 18K if you don't want to pay for the platinum. I bought my diamond eternity band from them and it's excellent quality. HTH, good luck!!

Thanks for the link kaleigh, they really have some lovely pieces!

I particularly like this one and think it looks very "engagementy".

Shelly I love that ring and yes it does look like a beautiful engagement ring. And think of the fun wedding band you could get to go with it, yummm.

that does look very engagementy shelly. i like the idea of the etoile or the atlas ring too. they are so classic.
i''m no help!

Let us know what you decide. Good luck and happy hunting!!!

Thank you ladies! I''m very, very, very excited! We have tentatively set a date for the wedding but haven''t told anyone yet as I want to wait until it''s official (ie. I have the ring!). I''m fit to burst as a result!

I am disappointed about the ring, but I am glad we were able to help my partner''s brother who is going through a really difficult time after breaking up with his significant other and having to start again with nothing. It just means that my dream ring will have to wait a while longer as it is approximately 5 x the price of what we are now looking at. But I get an extra ring which I wouldn''t have gotten otherwise to make up for it! And you can never have too much jewellery, right?!

I''m off to the mall tonight to look at dresses so I can get an idea of styles and prices.

Tomorrow is my birthday (35 - where did the time go?!) and on Saturday we are off to the Hunter Valley here in NSW, Australia. It''s "wine country" and we have two glorious days to soak it up! Including an outdoor concert at a winery on Saturday evening featuring, amongst others, John Fogarty!

I''m looking forward to Monday most of all... we are going into the jewellery district of Sydney to visit some of the "top-end" jewellers. And I get to visit my first ever Tiffany! I have decided to just try on lots of rings and get the one I most like, not the one that looks most "appropriate" for an e-ring, if that makes sense. So, hopefully I will have some good news on Monday.

Happy early birthday shelly, have a fab weekend and report back to us after Monday. Have fun at Tiff''s!!!

Shelly....Happy Birthday!!!

Sounds like you have a fabulous weekend ahead! ...And then get to top it off with a ring shopping trip in Sydney! Wow.

I visited the Hunter Valley many years ago and it was beautiful....and very familiar looking. (I live in the "other" Wine Country...in No. California..

I'm looking forward to hearing all about your great time....

PS: I LOVE interesting and unique bands...Tiff Atlas and etoile included. Coincidently today I was in a jewelry shop that had some fabulous one-of-a-kind, custom bands. I found myself wishing I were married so I'd have an excuse to wear one!

Thanks for the birthday wishes.

Widget, I was just watching Sideways last week and thinking that wine country CA looked beautiful!

I haven''t spent any amount of time in the Hunter Valley despite it only being a couple of hours drive away from Sydney (which is where I live). So I''m really looking forward to it. I love my wine! And we will be checking out potential wedding venues while we are there. We haven''t decided where we will be married yet, in Sydney or maybe the Hunter Valley...

Pink sapphire sounds great

I''m smiling because Sideways is about ''my'' central California wine country. These days vineyards spread out over huge areas of CA, north to south. Before Sideways, wines produced in the Santa Barbara-Santa Maria region were sort''ve an open local secret, as were some of the great restaurants. Formerly most people passing through the Santa Ynez Vally were trying to spot Michael Jackson''s former Neverland Ranch but now they come looking for wine and great food.
Widget''s Napa-Sonoma locale a couple of hundred miles north is still our premiere wine region but each area has its specialty, like the lovely Wente Bros. and Concannon rieslings and other whites grown in the gravelly soil east of San Francisco. Other regions have other types.
We enjoy the Hunter and Barossa Valley wines from Oz, too. We tried a blend named Black Opal not long ago but sadly, it didn''t live up to its prestigious name.

Our weekend away was just fantastic! Very relaxing. All we did was eat and drink all weekend. We also managed to come home with four cases of wine!

Yesterday (Monday) we went to the jewellery district in Sydney to look at some rings. First stop was Percy Marks, a prestigious jeweller established in 1899. I tried on a beautiful 2.2ct pink sapphire with a bead set halo and bad with a total of .41ct of diamonds. Very pretty! I tried on a couple of other rings that were out of our price range including a blue diamond! All their jewellery is hand made and it's the same store my beautiful pink and white diamond earrings came from.

Next we went to Tiffany. I was so excited as I've always wanted to visit Tiff's. To say I was disappointed would be an understatement. I tried on a few different rings: the diamond set Atlas which looked terrible on me, the wide Etoile which isn't available in platinum/white gold here, Tiffany classic solitaire, a few eternity bands, a Legacy with a pink sapphire and, just for fun, a $100K Legacy! I was HORRIFIED by their prices! The pink sapphire was much smaller that Percy Marks but more than twice the price.

Next we decided to visit Georg Jensen. From what I knew of their designs, I wasn't really that keen but thought "why not?". And wouldn't you know it? This is where we found it! After thinking about the kind of ring I would like, I had decided on two possible options to suit our budget: a coloured stone or something completely different. I have decided on something completely different. The ring is called Fusion and is basically modular jewellery. I have decided on two end pieces in white gold with diamonds as an engagement ring and a plain yellow gold insert to be added to the middle as a wedding ring.

My OH, who said he didn't want a ring, loved the plain yellow and white gold combination and has decided he would like one as a wedding ring! Just one yellow and one white gold end piece for him.

I really think I can wear this combination for the rest of my life. It's so comfortable and can easily slip under a ski glove - important considering we are planning on a skiing honeymoon!

And it's certainly different.

Anyway, here it is:

Very cool story Shelly. How funny my fiance''s sister lives in Perth with her husband, and like Richard M, his folks live in "Sideways" wine country, small world. Both Napa (NorCal) and the Santa Ynez valley (central coast Cal) are gorgeous! Your intermediary ring is very cool and you''re right very unusual best wishes and let us know when you begin the search for the "real ring". I too have an intermediary ring mine is a little band you may have seen at Tiffany''s it''s the Elsa Peretti band a 2mm plat ring with a .02 diamond. We decided on it because I am sentimental and would have a hard time "trading" up the original stone, although if you spend enough time on PS the sparklies start temping even the avid bleeding heart romantics. LOL. I wear it on my right hand and will resize it as my wband when the time comes. I know what you mean about being disappointed in Tiffany''s though we have probably 5 within 50 miles of where we live (bay area NorCal) and though their stuff is nice it is SOOOO overpriced. My sweetie bought my little band before I discovered PS. There is no room for customization because their stuff is "branded" so I will more than likely go with GOG and Mark Morrell when the time to get my "real" ring comes. Again best wishes and congratulations!

oh, my, i LOVE your e-ring/wedding ring ensemble!!!!! very unique, practical, creative, and timeless! good work!
when last in sydney, i had to go to the georg jensen shop. it was hard to leave without buying something.

and for our perth connection: my husband is from perth! and my absolute favorite pinot noir is from the mt barker region: castle rock, a small family run place that primarily sends their bottles to restaurants but are available for tasting and purchase ''at the vineyard''.

Ooooooh, Shelly! I''m so glad you checked back in with a report on your weekend!

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE your choice of Jensen bands!!!! They''re so classy and utterly unique!

Congratualtions!

We''ll have to see hand shots, of course..

PS: BTW: What does OH stand for? Should I know? I know what SO is, but not OH... have you set a date??

Just to complete the Perth connection... my future sister in law lives in Perth!

OH - stands for other half!

Thanks for all your kind comments and encouraging words. We are both really happy with the rings and I think it''s special that we will have "his and hers" sets.

No date has been set but we are thinking of August at this stage. I should be working at the moment but just can''t concentrate and have whiled away the last hour downloading information on wedding packages for the Hunter Valley! We are thinking of a small wedding around the 50 guest mark. Most likely held at a winery. At least we know we''ll get good wine!

I think I got a bit carried away with the whole "one ring to rule them all" thing! Caught up with the whole idea of this being THE most expensive piece of jewellery I''ll ever receive etc.

I''ve realised that it''s more important that I love my rings and enjoy wearing them.

My OH is already looking at solitaire pendants to add to the diamond collection.! As he pointed out, there''s nothing stopping us from getting a beautiful RHR at a later date. I''m very lucky that he sees the value in jewellery.

And the manager at Georg Jensen said that they can send back the middle piece to Denmark to have it diamond set for an anniversary or baby etc... Yet another option!

How cool!!! Or maybe you could get middle pieces in pink or blue sapphires to commemorate future babies!

Hee hee...I guess I''m getting carried away...

I think winery weddings are fabulous....romantic and festive. My son was married at a winery and it was just beautiful. The guests really loved it too.
