Hi All;
I am interested in getting my GF a pink sapphire ring, I was wondering if there is anything specific to look for in a pink sapphire?
Also, we live near a mall and there is a jewelry storer in there that she always looks at and seems to like. Is there anything to look for or something to see if they are a good jewelry store, the name is Christian Bernard. Thanks

Phil

Hi, Pad3006!

Do a search of "Christian Bernard"...I think there are quite a few mentions of them...

You might also search your hometown/city to see if any recommendations of local retailers come up...

Another option, of course, is to find a stone online and have a ring made up...an adventure unto itself!

Hi, Pad...I thought I''d answer your PM here...then maybe others can jump in with suggestions, or to straighten me out if they think I''m wrong! :)

You asked about finding an emerald cut pink sapph to be made into a ring... emerald cuts are not as plentiful as, say. ovals, but they are out there. You have to figure out what your budget will be, whether or not you want the stone the stone to be heat treated (untreated stones are more expensive).

Once you''ve figured out what you want, and how much you want to spend, probably your best bet would be to have your local jeweler or a PS vendor find a couple of stones for you to choose from, and then have him/her mount it for you.

If you''d like to shop for the stone yourself, or at least look around to see what''s out there, just google "pink sapphire" and you''ll be busy for a year!

Here are just a couple of suggestions...there are many many more!
www.palagems.com (wholesale only)
www.thenaturalsapphirecompany.com (unheated stones)
www.ajsgems.com (more affordable, heat treated stones)

Here ar a couple I found just to give you an idea of what''s out there. It''s sort of unfair putting these two pics together like this...obviously one is much more an unflattering closeup...they are both roughly one and a quarter carats in weight. The one on the left is heated, from ajsgems, and costs $576/ct; the other is from the Natural Sapph.Co (untreated) at $800/ct. As with most gemstones, the price-per-carat increases as the stones get bigger.

Good luck!

I personally like the one on the left, the color is awesome, heat treated or not!!! Fabulous.

If you can afofrd to hit Tiffanys, my father bought my mmother a pink sapphire and diamond irng there and it has the most wonderful color I have ever seen. It is really deep and not treated...it is a stunning ring. They dont often do rings liek that but when they do

I second The Natural Sapphire Company. I went to their store to check out some stones in person and was blown away! The colors are amazing...I particularly love pinks and yellows. They have all shapes and sizes. Just keep in mind that sapphires are "heavier" stones so they don''t compare to diamonds in carat weight and corresponding size. Most of my favorites were pushing three carats...and to my eye they looked great!!

Hi All;
thanks a lot for all the feed back and info.
The sites are very good and i see I have lots of options.

If pink sapphires in the size I need are too expensive, is a pink tourmline a good substitute or would that look odd with dimonds near it? Thanks

Phil

Pink tourmaline ? It can even be better - high saturation is definitely more common and allot less expensive than it is in sapphire. There are some interesting and well cut pinks at Actones and AJSgems and Customgemstones - these sellers have received feedback here as well.

What size are you after ? And what kind of pink (deep near red versus spring-time light) ?

Deeper pinks are thought after in tourmaline, but light ones might just not be bright enough (IMO) because tourmaline is not a very bright stone - not when compared to sapphire or spinel. Light colors really do benefit from high RI, I think.

About the deeper pinks and tourmaline...

There is a bit of a name game that you might find interesting: hot pink colors without orange/brown tint are usually sold as "Rubelite" not "Pink tourmaline". In theory, Rubelite should be the name for red tourmaline, but since red-red is rare, pink-ish color is what usually is found.

The peach color is most often brownish pink and may change from more pink to more orange depending on light. This is not true for all stones or all sources - if the description does not sound appealing and a hot pink color is what you are after, you might want to ask the seller about brownish overtone and color change.

For example... here's an in-between & changer color versus hot pink at ACstones (the pictures are ok, the first one must have been caught in lighting that makes it looks the most pink).

Two more shops are well worth a click: one more pink tourmaline comes pictured in the most pink guise with the color shift described verbally at Customegemstones (LINK). And there is some hot pink rubelite at AJSgems (LINK). These are deep pinks and rubelite is expected to have inclusions. Darker stones with less saturation could happen, especially is not very large (10 carats is "large" here). At least... this is what I would be looking to avoid.

About the light pinks and spinel...

If light, bright pink is what you prefer, than you are in luck.

Spinel does that color wonderfully - probably better than sapphire since spinel is a slightly brighter stone. Not to mention cheaper ! And light pink spinel has not quite caught up high prices despite the mounting respect for this gem material.

Multicolour.com and AJS carry some very nice pink spinel - both light and deeper reddish pinks betwee 3 and 5 carats. Among which...

These cost between $700 and $1500 and my dearest is the heart shape for its astounding color. The shape can be made lovable and dignified by the ring's design - unless you are already considering heart shapes regardless.

This is what happened to a pink diamond heart - and that stone's color could not face pink sapphire or spinel.

Hi;
I guess either color is nice, but orginally I was thinking it would be cool to have it a light pink so that it would at least sort of match the pink diamond ring I am trying to copy. It was a light to medium pink. But of course it was 1.8 million from Tiffanys.
We saw the ring 3 weeks ago and she still mentions how beautiful it was so I would love to get one made that really resembled its beauty and its wow value.
It was around 4 carats and it was bright and sparkled a lot so maybe that last stone you mentioned (sorry I forget the spelling) is a good option because it will be bright and it will at least I think match the color well. thank you

I had another Q maybe you all could answer for me.

The setting I would want for the ring is a sinple four prong setting with pave diamonds going down 1/2 or 3/4 of the shank and on the four prongs holding the stone. (similar to gingerBcookie''s ring on the show me your ring page)
Is that something I will have to have made or are they common enough to be able to find one online or in a jewelry shop?
Id like it to be a special ring, maybe one that would almost be a "pre-engagement". thanks

Phil
