Planning a blue topaz ring: sky vs Swiss vs london

Ooh can someone explain the difference?

I've always wanted to know!

Thank you for asking! I was being lazy. Here are some pictures. Sky blue is close ish to auquamarine; the darker blues, I’m not sure which, but in real life one of them reminds me of windex! Blue and vibrant! I’m leaning towards sky blue. Maybe a massive pear halo ring. Gives me Elsa / Frozen vibes!B93A2505-196D-4796-886D-535075FEC605.jpeg

Swiss - looks paraiba like!

Electric blue for me.

London blue is too dark.

Sky blue is fine, however EB is nicer to me personally.

DK :))

Love the Swiss or London (I know London is dark, but I think it’d be gorgeous with a diamond halo contrast!)

Swiss or London

Swiss blue reminds me too much of windex B2F6A24F-7F28-4E3A-8A6F-FE6C5F40FC0A.jpeg

I like sky blue but it doesn’t seem very saturated 0E35E995-63E1-4A56-BF65-D92998EED42B.jpeg96FE86D5-A1D7-4972-AFC4-8810387C418C.jpeg

You guys, I’m wondering if pink topaz might actually be the way for me!

Just be careful, because much of it is diffused or coated (not sure if that bothers you). Natural pink topaz is beautiful, but somewhat rare. :)

Ohhh this thread is right up my alley. First, I prefer sky blue bordering on Swiss blue. London has too much grey for me, making it too dark. I want pool-water blue, Gulf of Mexico blue, sparkling crystal-clear blue.

A long, long time ago I worked at a department store that sold fine jewelry. There was a diamond trade-up program, we sourced from Harry Winston, and merchandise ran the gamut of price points from very affordable “best value” items to mid-range colored stones to commercial-quality (read: mall store) gemstones. However! We had this trio of cocktail rings (an amethyst, a citrine, and a blue topaz) with huge centers and yellow gold settings, all very sleek/modern at the time (late 1990s). I was absolutely in LOVE with the blue topaz piece and I’ve searched for something like it ever since. I remember it was $570 and back then I made $5/hour plus 10% commission after I covered my hours. So if I worked 30 hours in a week I would have to make $150 in sales before I started earning that 10% commission on anything, just to give an idea of affordability.

The topaz was swimming pool blue, emerald cut, probably 15x10mm, but the setting! Omg the setting was just fabulous. It had these thick tubular prongs that held the center stone but underneath the center was an entire band of square-cut invisible set blue topaz. I wish I could draw it or find a pic.

I’d buy it in a heartbeat right now if I could find it!

Excited to see your blue topaz journey!

Oh ok! So that’s why it was hard for me to find. Thank you for that info :)

Hmm. I really want a very large but inexpensive and somewhat durable centre for this pear halo ring.

Haha ok thank you for being the only person besides me who actually likes sky blue!

That story… oh, we never forget the ones that got away! But I like to think that those are the ones that keep me on this journey :)

I own all colors and prefer Swiss the best, as London goes grey and dark in many lights and the sky looks pale and boring unless cut to maximize brilliance. Although not mentioned, when it comes to affordable blues, tanzanite beats them all with liveliness and scintillation. Tanzanite is soft but absolutely beautiful, especially when compared to topaz side by side.

blue are all irradiated right?
only pink and orange and white are natural

The blues are all irradiated except there are some very pale blues found, but they are pretty light tone, and not as pretty as the more electric blues. The deeper and more vibrant the blue, the more expensive the rough is.

If you want pink then I would go with spinel because it’s durable and sparkly. For blue, also consider zircon which is affordable, has incredible sparkle and fire, good hardness but can eventually show facet wear.

Haha you know my suggestion for pink!

Tourmaline!!!

It's not the hardest but you can't beat the price for a giant stone. If it's well cut it will be incredibly lively!
