Hi everyone! Hope this is ok to ask here. If not, please forgive. I am looking for information on 2 sets of diamond stud earrings. I have a daughter with special needs and need to sell these to get a handicap van for her wheelchair, but not sure what to ask on them. We bought them recently as an investment but just received word that we'll be traveling often for her medical needs and we desperately need a handicap van so need to sell. I listed on Craigslist and had a man tell me diamonds only sell for 1/5 of the certified appraisal. Would someone please tell me if that's true or what they may be worth. I'm aware that no one can give an exact but just a round about based on specs. I just want to make sure I'm not getting taken advantage of. I very much appreciate any and all info, advice or suggestions. Pics and IGI card are below. Thank you so much

Welcome! I'll be glad to look up some pricing for you. IGI isn't quite as reputable as GIA grading, but we can get close, hopefully! Those appraisals or insurance valuation amounts are usually inflated and fairly meaningless. How much did you pay? That's the full retail value which usually is on the high side. Is this one set of two diamond studs or two sets of two diamond studs? The appraisal summaries posted above are duplicates.

Thank you sooo much! This is stressing me so bad lol. Oh it's two sets of two diamond studs set 4 prong 14k white gold. so sorry the igi were duplicate. I will upload the second certificate now. I paid $3000 for both sets. At the time, we though it was a good deal but now not certain. We need $4000 for the van but don't think we're going to make it sadly. I need to try and get as much as possible but certainly want to be fair. I listed them as best offer because I don't want to give too high a price and be way off but don't want to hurt myself either. It seems 1/5 of appraisal is a bit low but I really wouldn't know. I would deeply appreciate any advice more than you know. Thank you

It is true to say that secondhand diamonds sell for less than they were bought for new, but 1/5th of an appraisal price is an exaggeration, I would say.

(Diamonds are often suggested as an investment tool but, sadly, they generally don't go up in value. Rather, they will hold what value they have over long periods of time, perhaps increasing in line with general monetary inflation, which means they are not great for short term holding.)

You might get more money for them if you kept them on sale for longer and were firm in your pricing, but that must be balanced against the need for the money now - the classic dilemma!

Hopefully you can get a decent amount towards the van purchase :)

Well, when we bought them it was under a similar situation with health issues about a month ago. These are actually new as in never worn. There is a tag around the backs that you have to remove to take them off the card. My husband's coworker had a new baby and the mother had some complications and was going to be unable to return to work after her recovery. They were worried about losing their house so after days of the coworker stressing about selling them, my husband felt sad for them and wanted to help. We simply went by what he told us they were worth and were by no means familiar with diamonds...I never could afford a diamond and if I ever did buy something like this, I would feel horribly guilty at what needs I could have purchased instead lol

I just need a general idea of how much to ask for them in the private setting Craigslist, trading post etc. I could put them on eBay but not even sure where to reserve the price. I don't want to make a load on them, just a fair and honest price.

Diamond jewelry is almost never a good investment. The best chance of making a profit when diamond prices go up is usually only on higher quality diamonds such as GIA Excellent cut and good color and clarity. I doubt I1 clarity will ever be a good investment, to be honest.

If they sold you the two pairs for $3000, I don't think you'll lose a whole lot. They are likely around a grade lower than GIA, so $1500 a pair wasn't a terrible price to pay. It's just hard to say. I1 and I2 are poor clarity, but there are people who would rather have the size and sacrifice clarity.

I would never list these at the replacement value price because you're going to miss your buyers since they aren't looking at items priced that high. My suggestion is to price at half the appraised values, $2430 and $1960 and still make it best offer. You can say asking price is half the appraised value but we are offering a best offer option. I am just hoping you'll get your $3000 back and not lose any money. It will be awesome if you are able to get a little more.

I will be thinking of you and hope that you will be able to get what you need for the van!

I just remembered something. I sold a pair of similar diamond studs that I bought before I came to Pricescope. hey were .70-.75 each, very good cut, and were appraised later at H color I1 clarity (they were represented as SI clarity when I bought them before I was educated on diamonds here!). I sold this pair for $1700 and was lucky to get it. I lost several hundred dollars. I think diamond prices weren't too different than they are today.

Thank you! So would you suggest around $1000? Or do you have a price suggestion for diamond prices now? I tried to do my own research online with a Dianne price calculator but unfortunately, it ranged from 1700 to 3400 depending on site so that was no help lol

Look at my post above that last one about selling my own diamond studs. I said how I would price them. :-)
