Please help me find a setting

Packrat, that is awesome!! That's the look I am envisioning. I also love the OEC. Even though OECs are "old" cuts, they look so fresh and modern to me when the cut is symmetrical because the facets are so bold and chunky. It's also what I like about well executed rose-cuts. Time to save my shekels.

You ladies are so helpful. I've come to realize that if it has to be pronged, I can probably get a thin metal halo. If I can get a bezel somehow with an open gallery, it will probably have to be chunky bezel. Of course, it depends on what the jeweler says.

I have a few more questions and points for you to mull over:

1. Your current stone measures 5.1 mm, if I read it corrrectly. The stone you want to put in is 7 mm. Putting the shape difference of round and cushion aside, I don't think Quest can put in a stone that is 2 mm larger even with a laser because you have small melees set into the metal which can loosen. To open up the setting that much will distort the shape of the seat holding the little diamonds and you risk losing those melees. Best to ask Quest before progressing further.

2. A white sapphire will only give you white flash. You will not see any other colours for the most part, occasionally picking up some colour reflected from the surroundings. Will you be happy with that?

3. Is your setting 14k or 18k? I think with the right yellow sapphire, it might work out well, especially since bezeling the stone will amp up the colour.

4. The stone in the ring posted is not a rose cut. It is an OEC or old European cut. A rose cut has a flat bottom and domed top, much like a cabochon, except that the dome is faceted. The faceting is also much bigger, allowing you to see through to the bottom of the stone, leaking light like crazy. OECs that are cut well are spectacular.

Can anyone suggest somewhere to see a bunch of old-cut stones in person? I live in southern MD.

Chrono, thanks for your thoughts. I appreciate your putting so much thought into my ring.

1. Quest told me earlier this year that they could make a new head to accommodate a 7 mm stone, but I just emailed them again to confirm. I also asked if the prongs would curve out after they exit the shank, because there is no way to alter the actual width of the opening in the shank.

2. I would not be happy with that. I guess diamond is my only colorless option.

3. 18k. I was looking at sweetleila's yellow sapphire (below), and I think this it is the color I prefer. I like how it's darker yellow than the yellow gold.

4. I noticed it was an OEC, but I was mentioning that I like how OECs and rose-cuts both have chunky facets that make them look modern (instead of old) to me. I probably didn't explain well.
