Skippy, when is the exam?? GOOD LUCK!!!!

Harriet, there is a lot of "casual" jewelry out there for a few hundred dollars. Last summer, I bought a necklace and bracelet set for around $250 that was 3 strands of aquamarine beads and coin pearls - it''s striking. Ok, I bought it on sale and it retailed for more, but you get the point. Great summer piece to wear with a casual sundress to a cookout or something. Looks MUCH better than say a $250 gold chain.

There are so many gorgeous things out there - peridot or labradorite beads, coral, torquoise, etc. - don''t feel you always have to buy diamonds or cut gemstones. Sometimes they just don''t look right with casual outfits. The key is to buy things that you love, that express your personality, and that you can use. I prefer pieces that have "impact" or make a statement.

"Jewelry" does NOT need to translate to Tiffany, Cartier, Harry Winston, etc. This is very narrow and will disappoint anyone who wants to buy you something special but can''t afford the $1K minimum (+/-) in these stores. Think about broadening your horizons.....

Hi,
I''d have no problem finding something if I had an actual budget to work with. I think I''ve found the place:
http://www.starlightbands.com/index.htm

Harriet, the cheapest I could find - the skinniest with ONE of the smallest diamond size - is $350. Is this something you would want?

I like an even cheaper one -- the thinnest plain rose gold one.

I love some of those fabulous chunky necklaces with semi precious stones, or a great bracelet that is not diamond covered...there are some great options, like Starry said...

So do I, but I still don't know what "a few hundred" means.

Harriett, you are the best but I think you might be over thinking
20.gif
the whole thing. Go look on your own out at the shops. I don't think you need lots of input; go with your heart. I think you should have DF ask his parents how much you should spend; that should work. Just do it.

Whatever you buy is going to be great. happy Birthday

Is it that difficult to ask them, So and so, I am having trouble determining what you are actually giving me and I would like to have a clearer idea of what amount you are thinking of..."

I think either your fiance gets it clarified, or I would stay under $500. I doubt they want the GMIL''s item to be more expensive than theirs, so $500 seems to be a safe amount. As much as I love looking at beaded jewelry, I never wear it, so I can''t be of much help with that! But it would be beautiful if it fits your style!

How about a pearl bracelet and pearl earrings? Then later you could get the pearl necklace. Those are classic staple pieces and good for a conservative profession like you''re in.

That is a great idea, maybe a simple pair of really large south seas...simple and elegant...

Sorry to bother you all. Maybe I''m just frustrated because DF won''t asl his parents how much I should spend. Men, ya know?

Oh, is it ever. IL dynamics are tricky!

Makes perfect sense.

I already have the earrings and necklace. The matching bracelet is too expensive.

All I can say is been there, done that after 17 plus years...I would figure it out sooner rather than later...

I thought you''d understand!

Things haven''t always been plain-sailing between the ILs and myself, and this is the first time they are really trying. Given that, I want to tread very very carefully.

Got it. It is tricky, my situation is still not ideal but I have the power at this point...I do not let her get to me so her attempts do not succeed. If yours are trying, just be super gracious and do not worry if it is the greatest gift ever...

I was extremely touched when MIL said she had looked all over Europe (ok, she tends to exaggerate) for a piece of jewellery for me. There''s something else aside from my birthday that they want to mark, and I want to pick a special piece (that does not have to be expensive) to respect that.

Okay, that explains it. You are not bothering. Maybe you will find out more about the amount later and also, why don't you look for something in Italy when you go

i want to tell you that i think you are going to make a fine attorney. you can stay calm and on topic while remaining nice and polite. it serves one well.

Hi,
In case you still want more options, this link is to Sundance. The jewelry isn''t all "fine" but it is handmade and some of it is quite lovely. You may be able to find something fun there that''s in budget and brings you joy.

My favorites:
Pearl on a wire ring
Rosette diamond earrings

Good luck!

Hi Crown 1,
Currently, I''m leaning towards Etienne Perret''s starlight rings, which come in a variety of prices. Also, my ILs can have input, which they''ll like. Check out:
www.starlightbands.com.
That''s the nicest thing anyone has said to me in a long time.

It''s taken a lot of work, and continue to do so. Thank you most sincerely.

that looks like a fine choice.

I hope so. Thank you again.

I''d like a stackable bangle. Does anyone know of a reputable jeweller?
