Hello,

I’m securing 2 rubies to be made into bypass ring. One for me and one for DH except he doesn’t like jewelry- lucky me. They are native cuts so a bit wonky. The oval is a bit shallow I think at 1.8. Should I recut? Rectangle is 1.55 and maybe down to 1.3. Not sure it’s possible for oval being shallow. IMG_5642.jpeg

To get rid of a window in a shallow stone, you need more depth. The only way to accomplish this is to reduce the outline of the girdle so that the width to depth ratio is better. This could result in significant weight loss.

The shape of the smaller cushion is just a tad wonky (common for rubies), but the cut is fine. I wouldn't touch it! With regard to the larger oval, what are the length and width (you said the depth is 1.8mm)?

I don’t have the measurement but it’s 1.8ct. If recut, spread may be significantly smaller?

That’s what I’m afraid of. Wondering if it’s bad enough to warrant recut.

I’ll try to upload a vid. Not sure how yet.

I was going to say, it had better be pretty small if the depth is only 1.8mm! lol I'd have a better idea of what to expect if I knew the LxWxD. Not all windowed stones are shallow. Deep stones can have windows too. But since this one is so large, if the stone is in fact shallow, you'll need to lose a good bit of spread to close it.

I wouldn't recut it unless the weight loss was small and there as no risk of fracturing the stone. It's rare as is, and wonky stones have character, they look antique.

Very pretty! I don't think that stone will benefit from a recut to the extent that it would be worth losing weight or size. Have you found out the LxWxD of the 1.88ct.?

Thank you. Not yet on dimensions. I posted video links last night but it looks like it’s still being approved by moderator.

5.4×6.7×4.3 for 1.55 ct

6.2x8.3x3.3 for 1.8 ct

I wouldn’t recut a ruby.
My other ruby is almost as flat as a pancake, weird native cutting obviously to retain carat weight but because it’s got colour the “drive through window” isn’t too obvious when set.IMG_7210.jpegIMG_8414.jpeg

Yeah, so the larger oval is a bit shallow. If you recut, because the window is so extensive, you'd need to lose quite a bit of size and weight to close it completely. I would either pass (if it bothers you) or appreciate it as-is. Good luck!

That’s really pretty. May I ask how big it is?

Seller said it’s not that visible in person with naked eye because of the color. @Bron357 mentioned that it may not be that visible once set. Is this true in most cases? Also, it would be difficult to find something comparable to match with the smaller stone? The overall consensus is rubies are cut to maintain weight and I’m guessing it’s due to rarity?

Absolutely... the rarer and more valuable a type of gem, the worse their cuts tend to be (in general). Yes, a window's appearance can be improved with an appropriate setting. The reflection of the metal in the gallery can help to sort of mask it. Did you ask the seller if he has something else that would match the 1.55ct.? Because it would be best to have both stones in-hand to compare color. It will be more difficult to match the color of the smaller stone with another by purchasing it elsewhere online.

I think there’s a slight variation in color between the two stones but they came from the same rough so I would imagine it’s the best possible match. Anything else I would imagine it’d be out of reach.
