Good morning all. Our LG front loader washing machine (2007) broke last night. Again. In the past Greg was able to fix it but this time it isn't looking good. SO I am starting to research washing machines and would love input from PSers

Any recommendations appreciated. Cannot be more than 27" wide to fit into the space. Our LG washing machine and dryer are red but I don't care about the color (though red would be a plus as I do not plan on replacing the dryer while it works). Most important is I need something reliable.

Please share your recommendations. Thank you

Here is a photo of the current set up. It's a small space for the washer and dryer. Vintage LOL

Wanted to add I most often use the speed wash option. Which I love. 20 minutes and it’s done. So that would be a plus. So far I am only seeing speed options of 30 plus minutes. But again reliability is my most important criteria. That and getting things clean of course

We have an LG similar to yours and DH replaced a part on it a few years ago and it’s still going strong.

Is sticking with LG an option? It seems they make a great machine and I also find the speed wash feature very convenient.

Yes absolutely. Thanks! Greg is replacing the drain pump as I write this but I’m not feeling hopeful as he’s fixed it more than once over the past decade and I’m thinking it’s lived its life. But I sure hope he can save it because darn, machines are more expensive than I remembered

And I agree completely. The 20 minute speed wash is fantastic

Update. Greg fixed it by installing a new drain pump. For now. I’m still looking for recommendations however because this is the third time something broke. All different parts. This time we got lucky. I want to be prepared so if anyone has specific recommendations I’d appreciate it. I’m open to front or top loaders. I just want reliable

SPEED QUEEN!

I have a thing with washer and dryers. I LOVE LOVE LOVE ours! We have gas top loaders upstairs and a stacked electric unit downstairs. They are AMAZEBALLS. They last forever. The company is based out of Wisconsin- they have been building washer and dryers for decades… they are a company that builds them to last, which is a rarity today.

The only downfall is the drum is smaller than a lot of other ones. I’ve never had issues though, I even wash my queen down comforter in them- tight squeeze, I just add a prewash and soak to the cycle so it’s condensed before the laundry soap cycles through.

My LG washer and dryer are going strong and are so old that I can't remember when I bought them. The brand still appears as #1 overall reliable on a lot of "best" lists.

Generally when I replace any kind of appliance I look first at Miele or Bosch, especially Miele as they have a solid reputation for dependability and energy efficiency which is often reflected in the price. I have a spiritual relationship with my Miele dishwasher.

I have a Miele that we got in January 2007. It has never been repaired and I love it dearly. They''re not cheap but do seem to be built to last.

I second Miele. Mine took some getting used to: smaller loads and the dryer doesn't dry quite dry (unless you add extra time), but it's been reliable so far.
I had an older LG that needed many repairs over the years (including the pump), so this time we paid a bit more for a solid reputation of service.

Electrolux. Large capacity was important to us. My mother has a Bosch that just keeps on going.

I would've said Kenmore Elite, But my set is almost 20yrs old and was one of the very first push of modern front loaders. They've only had one issue and that was last year? year before? I thought she was a gonner but she fixed right up.
I don't know if they're still built to be the beasts that we have.

If and when they finally give out, I'll likely get Speed Queen or Electrolux.

Same here - we have always had Kenmore washers and dryers which are generally made by Whirlpool I am told. Sears was an easy place to see them all to decide which ones to order. Now, many places stock them. The front loading washer works just fine - probably close to 20 years old. The dryer has had the heating element replaced a couple of times. If replacing, I would not get a front loader. I have to clean under the vinyl ring around the opening every time I use it, and always leave the door partially open. Next time, I want a top loader, no agitator and no fancy, smancy stuff. Just the two of us now so basic will do me just fine!

Mine are both Whirlpool and so old I don't remember but I think the dryer is close to 35 years old and the washer (top loading) about 30. Neither has ever broken but the dryer needed a fuse once about 20 years ago.

My advice is don’t buy the fanciest one.
I did that, it had like 40 wash cycles and adjustable everything and it had different sounds for different issues and gave me lovely messages. Woo Hoo I thought.
Right after the warranty ended it stopped working. The repair man advised me that the computer module replacement was $600 plus labour AND there were two modules so the other one could go at any time.
How many washing cycles do I use ? 3.
His advice, buy the basic one, don’t pay for what you won’t use. So I did.
Three years later and it’s running happily as I type.

Yes, I find with appliances (and some other things) that the more bells and whistles, the more they tend to break.

My point exactly! Basic is best. Although the functions and bells and whistles sound nice, I find I tend to use the same old settings. Cost is less and so are repairs if needed!

I SO regret not getting a speed queen. I HATE my GE so much. We had a front loading Kenmore Elite that was amazing and made a poor decision when replacing it just because the Speed Queen isn't "attractive." Next time, won't even be a decision. Good luck!
