My emerald rings. I went from having zero emerald jewelry to having 2 rings in the span of about a month

Husband had the first ring made for my birthday and when I was having the jeweler make adjustments to the bezel work, I saw they had the second ring for sale…and bought it due to how unique it was.

Still a newbie to emerald buying, but am hooked!

Such a fabulous thread. Emeralds are my favourite and it feels like a new pricescope favourite too!
Here is mine, a flawed but beautiful old girl. She is Colombian, no treatment, looks much better on than off and weighs 15 carats. The setting (probably marmite but I love it) is late 50s, early 60s but the dealer seemed to think she was a much older stone. If it was practical to wear her every day I would!

My Green Marble

So earlier this week my (wonderful amazing) husband took me on a last minute trip to London, he actually suggested the jewellery market Greys Antiques commenting that perhaps I might have a ‘little something’. Now this is the first time that he has ever made a comment like this in our 13 year...

I am the rare PSer who doesn’t love emeralds for myself although I do enjoy seeing all of these gorgeous pieces. I think I just don’t tend to wear green. My only green piece is a Merelani mint garnet and it’s very pastel.

But I didn’t want to be left out so I did purchase a nice Muzo emerald with low oil from Desert Rose gems. It’s very glowy so I can definitely see the appeal. I doubt I will ever set it and might end up listing it at some point.

I also have several emeralds that came out of preowned rings so that I could use the settings for stones I liked more.
One is actually quite nice.

There’s a small gem show near my home once a year, and there’s only two dealers I pay any attention to. One sells all kinds of gems like demantoid, various other exotic gems, and he had a bin of lesser priced gems. I was absolutely NOT looking for an emerald, but this one was screaming at me. The clarity, bluish green color, crystal, metallic green sheen, all screamed at me. I louped it to see inclusions that were natural looking to me.

He said he got it from a collection of Zambian stones he thinks, but the stone is very glowy and looks Columbian to me, but I couldn’t pass it up for the price. This jeweler didn’t know much about emeralds, so I just snapped it up. In water at home, I could see it is not a triplet or doublet, and it has zoning indicative of natural material and some crystal inclusions.

1.42 carats. Hopefully not too good to be true. It’s very glowy, and it gleams in all lighting, which is why I couldn’t get very clear shots of it. I broke my rule of not getting a lab report with an emerald, but I felt it was worth the risk for the price (under $1k), so I may just send it off.

This stone has one eye visible inclusion across the face, but when you loupe it, you see other inclusions and crystals, as well as some micro surface pitting indicative of most emeralds. It’s the bluest Zambian I’ve seen, if it is Zambian. Most Zambians look more yellow to me.

Lol, I was on the lookout for a new setting for that stone. It’s on my todo list. Trillions are so hard to find decent semi mounts for.

Here it is in sunlight. The above photos are in artificial light. I’m going to have it evaluated, but it has an inclusion across the face, as you can see, and some other inclusions you can only see easily with a loupe, including what I believe to be two phase inclusions. I suppose some Zambians can have this shade of color????

It is very clean though. I’m not sure of the amount of clarity enhancement.

I paid $750, so we’ll see. If it’s synthetic, that’s far too much, but if natural and even with clarity enhancement, I think it’s a great buy.

It’s medium toned and the hue is definitely a bluish green. Very weak fluorescence under UV, and minor color zoning looking through backside face down.

This is interesting. Very very blue under the new led lights in our newly remodeled basement. It’s almost like an indicolite. I am planning on having it evaluated, but if anyone is more familiar with Zambians, let me know if this is possible. I took these photos with my husband’s superior iPhone camera. These photos are very accurate for color. It photographs way more accurately than my poor Colombian emeralds, which are camera shy, lol!

If I don’t like the setting in person I may return it. I’m not an expert on rose cut diamonds but it looks interesting and it’s yellow gold.

The emerald is 8x6 oval. Looks like it has a window except in the hand shot. I’m hoping the diamonds are sparkly.

If you end up keeping the ring, I say keep the emerald in there for a bit. A 6x8 oval is a calibrated size so you should have plenty of options if and when you decide to set it!

The ring arrived and it’s gorgeous but I don’t think I am going to keep it because it won’t fit my sapphire and the emerald is too nice to take out of the setting. It’s a gorgeous, bright green with a hint of blue and it glows in the sun. The window is not noticeable - all you see is the green and even the inclusions disappear when wearing. The diamonds are cute rose cuts and glitter. The setting is a subtle rosy yellow gold and offers great hand coverage.

What to do?! I don’t have any need for this ring but it was such a steal. I could find another 8x6 stone to fit but then the emerald will be lonely.

I think I’m going to return it but what do you all think?

Well I had my emerald evaluated in the city today, by PGS Gem lab. I wanted origin and clarity enhancement type/amount.

It was evaluated by Tom Tashy G.G. F.G.A. and he also teaches emerald courses. I wanted to send it to AGL, and maybe at some point I will, but I was horrified at what Gene of precisiongem stated about packages getting stolen. So I personally took the stone to this lab in downtown Chicago.

Well the emerald is not only natural, but Columbian (not Zambian as was told to me), and minor oil only (no epoxy or resin). I’m very happy considering his knowledge and expertise. They also evaluate exotic gems.

The emerald is very clean, so I was worried about it being synthetic. I am really happy!!

Time to find a worthy setting.
