I don’t know what to make about this emerald cut that I’m contemplating. I’m in the discovery process.
I love love love it in the sunlight—but is that a given?
I love it when it’s just been steamed—but after pawing it for a few hours, lol, it looks dull.
I dropped it in a few settings and I’m some, the bow tie is very obvious!
Finally. I feel like i can appreciate the steps only if I’m gazing at it close—up. I am near-sighted but I feel that I have to pull it really close to my face.
Pictures to follow. Please tell me about your experience with emerald cuts!

The halo setting seems to hide the bow tie but I think it also conceals the steps and I feel like the stone looks like a baguette.

So in the classic setting—which I was leaning towards in order to appreciate the shape more—-the bow tie is very obvious. Is this a badly cut stone or do all have a bow tie?

Finally, in a faux bezel. And omg! I finally see the black carbon spots!!!’

And in a ring holder. I love it. But is it bc the holders are covering up the bow tie? And I don’t think I would ever wear it as a solitaire anyway bc it’s a rhr.

This is the shallow stone from the other thread?
What you seeing is what I mentioned about reacting strongly to obstruction, you blocking light, made worse by close viewing conditions due to eyesight.
Also looks like it has more leakage than was apparent in the other photos.

Yes. It is. Thank you!

ECs show dirt and get dull incredibly fast. Everyone told me this but you don't believe it until you see it. It bothered me, a lot, as I like things pristine and can't be carrying around steamers and canned air all day. It was one reason I decided to get rid of my 2ct EC.

Personally I wouldn't get an SI emerald cut and I am quite clarity tolerant. It shows up everything.

The bow tie is quite obvious and the middle facets look quite lifeless IMO. I agree with you that the halo hides the bow tie but then you don't see the beauty of an EC - if haloing you may as well stick to a round IMO.

It looks great in the ring holder because light is hitting it from everywhere and it's pristine. Unlikely to be real world viewing conditions.

I love my ec engagement stone and my mom’s ec. My ec has 62.8% depth. No bowtie.

Ecs do look better when they are clean.

I just reset my engagement stone

I believe emerald cuts usually have issues with the obstruction or light leakages, which is the nature of step cuts in general. Though there are some high light performing emeralds available.

Brian Gavin has an Ideal cut Emerald,

JannPaul has a White Series cut Emerald,

Regardless, first step is probably to analyze it with the ASET!

I'm not an expert but it doesn't look well cut to me. Agree you should get and ASET.
Yes, EC's do need to be kept clean. I guess it's a question of how dirty your rings get. I have an EC and I don't feel like it gets dull or dirty quickly but I'm not dealing with little kids or using my hands in a high intensity way. I also clean my rings pretty regularly, no matter the cut. So I think you have to decide if a step cut is practical for you, given your daily life and also how often you tend to clean your jewelry.

An ASET image would not help, your eyes are telling you it reacts to obstruction to much for you.
The BG one above would also as its a contrasty design.

Agree. Ty. It’s going back today.

Can you circle the bow tie? I didn’t know EC had bow ties. I don’t see it!!

@nala I'm so sorry it didn't work out, but the good thing is you know you made the right decision! So at least you can have peace of mind on that front.

And this is a really interesting thread for educational purposes too. @Karl_K mentioned that the BG emerald is a contrasty design and would also have some obstruction issues, which reminded me of the BG ring below that someone else had posted a few years ago. In these pictures I can see the black band across the middle of the stones; is that a tradeoff that comes with the ideal light performance at other angles?

They dont, but they can have the same issue, darkness because its drawing light from the viewer. (obstruction)
Calling it a bow tie kinda drive me nuts but I gave up on correcting it.

It would be an issue for the OP it may not for others some like contrasty stones.
That much contrast of that type is not need to create a bright dynamic EC.
An EC creates its own contrast as its moved and the virtual facets fire off and on.
For example the beautiful EC lulu_ma posted has only very small contrast/obstruction zones.

Lol. Sorry for my ignorance. So it’s not a bow tie, great to know. I’ve been running more tests this afternoon and noticing the importance of how it faces. When I tilt the ring at an angle towards me, I appreciate it so much more. I don’t see darkness.

yes, obstruction varies with tilt and distance.

Ok. Do any of these pics look promising?

It looks like your EC has incredibly wide windmills. Maybe that's what's throwing you off when you look at it? Here is my EC for comparison.

more of the same.
If this was the right stone for you it would be making your heart sing.

Ty. I took it to a jeweler who is also an appraiser whom I frequent a lot. He looked it over for me and said the shape and facets are gorgeous. Color is pro J. He’s fine with the Clarity rating. And when I asked him if he could find me a better 2 carat or close to it for the price he said nope. He did advise that the window might be creating the issue. I forgot how he explained it but he said the depth or lack of was a problem.

I’ve always loved your ring!

Ok. So I think my issue is that I feel like the stone looks glassy in certain lighting. But. In other lighting I do find it stunning. So I don’t know if EC’s are bound to look glassy in certain conditions?

I personally love the shape, but you've mentioned a few things that are concerning you. Perhaps look at some other emerald cuts before deciding on this one?

I love emerald cut diamonds, but I do clean mine after each wear. I don't think mine ever looks glassy, but depending on the degree of tilt, there can be minor dark areas.

Bottom line, do you love it in spite of your concerns?

How does it go from looking like this—which I love to looking lifeless. Only led lights or the sun does it looks super contrasting? So I guess that I love the shape. I’m Not mad at color. Like the price and don’t mind the clarity. Is your stone a chameleon like this?
Or a DR Jekyll, lol?
